I was not on the pill exclusively for those issues, but it certainly did help me with the symptoms you describe. Since the pill normally stops you from ovulating, you have no ovulation pain. It also decreased my mood swings.
When you're on the pill, it takes over your body's natural production of estrogen -- with a low-dose pill, you actually have less hormones total during the month, and less dramatic swing in hormone levels, than you do during a normal cycle. That was very helpful for me.
Also, while I know some people feel that BCPs are unnatural hormones that are dangerous to take, my OB put my mind at ease by first of all explaining that I actually get LESS hormone every month on the BPCs and that every 5 years you're on BCPs actually decreases your risk of ovarian cancer by 20%. Apparently there's a slightly elevated chance of being diagnosed with breast cancer while you're on the pill, but the overall rate of getting cancer is the same on and off it (you're just more likely to be DIAGNOSED if you're on it -- go figure!). Finally, she told me that there is an increased risk of blood clots, the risk off BCPs is something like 1 in 10,000 and on BCPs it's something like 2 in 10,000 (I'm not certain those are the right numbers, but it was a very small risk either way).
I'm NOT saying you should take the pill! I just wanted you to know the facts that convinced me it was a good choice for me. However, some people tolerate it really well and it makes their cycles easy, and some people don't tolerate it at all. Whatever choice you make, I hope you find relief!
