My daughter's camp picture day is coming up. Any advice on how to choose the best photo package without choosing the most expensive one?
Buy the cheapest package, because the photos may be awful. If they're really good you can always order more.
I stopped ordering pictures from schools, sports, and camps because I can usually take better ones myself anyways (can take as many as I want until I get just the right shot) and it is cheaper to just have 8x10s made at Walmart.
Any time there are photos at events my kids go to, I'll buy the group photo and that's it - I'll have my kids write on a piece of paper who's in the picture right away before they forget. Then, I have a memory box for each of my kids so I'll put it in there after they've hung it in their room for a little while. Then, years from now they'll have something to look at and enjoy, laugh at and remember the stuff they were involved with.
These photo prices/packages can really get out of hand. That's why I'll buy the smallest package possible from school at the beginning of the year and that's it! Grandparents and aunts/uncles get a wallet-size photo with their Christmas card. When they started with the Spring photos, I put a stop to those real fast!! It gets crazy!!
Good luck!!
I never buy school photos anymore...they just don't turn out nearly as well as the pictures I take (and I am by no means a professional, I just have a really good camera). We also try to do professional family ones every so often...need to do those again.
I did get my kids spring pictures this past year. It cost me $130 for all 3 of them and the pictures are HORRIBLE. I can't find them right now or I'd be calling asking for a refund and sending the pictures back.
For camp, I didn't know they did pictures. I'd figure out what size you want and will hang or frame, and get that if you really want them.
Camps have picture days now? Good grief! I'd only get the group picture. After all, if you have her in pre-school, she'll be getting her school pics done in 2-3 months, right?
wow!! this is new to me!!!
I'm sorry - I wouldn't buy it. I might by the "group" picture - but NOT a single one...it's not school...it's camp. Group picture, print names on back...
Heck - i'd go myself and take the picture.
Unless there is really something special about the camp or the pictures, I would just get the cheapest package. If you need pictures for family, you can always go to the small studios inside stores and get some REALLY good pictures at very good prices. They usually have some good specials going on.
i'd just get the group picture. with photo processing so cheap these days, i can reliably get a better one myself and just shoot it over to costco for super-cheap reproductions.

My favorite pictures of my kids are the ones I take outside in beautiful settings.
I only order the 8x10 and class picture for my kid's photo album.
Get the smallest package.
Basically who gets what sizes? Some of my family members like the 5x7's and wallets. Only one gets 8x10 besides us. If you figure out who would really appreciate the pictures rather than "we should get pictures for everybody", you'll spend less. Really, only immediate family probably cares in the "picture day" way. Everyone else likes your kid, but doesn't need a picture to carry around. Grandparents, parents, maybe favorite uncle, etc.
I usually buy the most expensive package for school & sports.
Maybe I'm a sucker, but the grandparents want them, aunts, uncles, etc. and I like to be sure to have enough for everyone that wants a larger photo and wallets. Try to do a rough count in your head--go by that.
I have a background in a photography industry and I think ( especially in the age where everyone does pix on their phones, etc., not enough PRINTS are made, generally speaking.
So, yeah, the whole shooting' match for us.
(Never had camp photos though--how cute!)
I usually go for the package that has 2 5x7 sized pictures...
I find that it is usually the package that is second least expensive. You'll have to figure put what sizes and quantities you want and then compare the packages.
Yep, cheapest package because you can order more if you like. I've never heard of camp photos, but others on here seem to have experienced this. I know a lot of parents who only get class or group photos, but I for one always want an individual shot of my child -- however, our elementary school used a company that always gave us very good shots, so maybe my desire for individual shots comes from the fact that I assumed they'd always be pretty good pictures of her!
Your daughter may be more interested in having a group/team/unit shot than in her own individual picture -- my kid was really into having the official all-sixth-grade picture because it had her friends in it and she has enjoyed looking at it a lot. Same might apply to a camp group photo in your case.
