call the doc and ask. you don't want to be on the road in the middle of the desert to CA or in a plane and have something happen. Good luck!

Many young babies seem constipated when they are actually not. They do not have good muscle control to push things out, so it seems like they are grunting and trying very hard when actually it can be just alot of noise along with a little pushing. My daughter was a breastfed baby (and they say they poop more) and she didn't even go poop everyday all the time. Please be careful giving such a young baby anything for constipation, it can mess them up even more. I also think some docs are way too quick to switch to soy formula everytime a parent complains about their baby being gassy. Babies are gassy!!! Changing her food so much can wreak havoc to her digestive system and cause more problems. Just relax and give her some time. Sometimes my daughter would go 3 days without pooping and then on the 4th day she would poop all day. All of our bodies work differently - we don't all eat or poop on the same schedule.

This is obviously directly related to the soy formula. I would go back to the old formula. Gassiness is better than constipation! Have you tried gas drops and gripe water? Gripe water can work wonders for the gas and crying due to gas. It is expensive in the store, but if you look online there are recipes to make it yourself.

Before you buy anything over the counter or try things like Karo Syrup, please ask your doctor about them. My doc said absolutely NO karo syrup, I can't remember why but something about it being dangerous. And I never give anything to my kid, OTC, herbal, all-natural or anything, without check with the doctor first. Not everything on the shelves is safe, even though you think it would be.

As far as the constipation, it is normal for babies bowel schedules to change around this time. My son did the normal poop 3-4 times a day for the first 5 weeks, then stopped for about 4 days. My doctor said it was normal, and I had a couple of friends whose babies did the same. So I waited and sure enough, on day 5, huge blowout poop (in his Christmas outfit. Merry Christmas to me!). After that he would only poop every 4 days, like clockwork, until he started on solids. We used to joke that we couldn't leave the house today, because it was "poop day" and didnt want to be out when the blowout happened. I would call the doctor but give the new formula a chance to work, don't switch around too much. And don't panic, one thing I've learned is that every time you get a schedule down pat, the baby changes and you start all over again.

Hi A.,

It probably has to do with the formula. To help with the constipation you can get infant glycerine suppositories. Just insert slightly and in a few seconds she should be having a bowel movement. Also, an old home remedy that really worked with our son is just a tiny bit of corn syrup in one or two of her bottles.

The reason she could be eating less is that the flavor of the formula is different and she doesn't like it. She was used to one thing and now here is another. The best way to transition formulas is to do it an ounce at a time, for instance one ounce of soy to two ounces of milk for a day or so and then up it to two ounces of soy to one of milk for a day or two and then go completely soy so that it gives her system and her taste buds a chance to adjust. I would go back to two ounces of milk and one of soy and go about it more slowly.

I would call her pediatrician to make sure he isn't concerned about a bowel obstruction or a knot or twist in her instestines, but these are some things to try in the meantime.

I hope this is helpful.

You are not over reacting. I'd definitely call your doctor. How many wet diapers is she having?

My son had the same problem when on soy and there is nothing wrong w/the formula it actually helped w/his gasiness (and he was bad). I called the dr about the constipation and they told me to use karo syrup, it is totally safe and works wonders. Once I mixed it inw/his soy formula he had a poo diaper. Be sure to call about how much karo syrup to put in for how many ounces your making as that will be very important.

Hope that helps. Good luck!

First of all - don't panic - you can call your doctor no matter where you are, and they can find a doctor wherever you are if you need to see someone!

Secondly, my daughter only pooped every 2-4 days for the first 6 weeks, and the first 3 weeks we went into the doctor once a week, while I paid $25 a visit for them to "stimulate" her, then they finally told me - use the rectal thermometer with vaseline, only as far as you are supposed to put it in to take the temp, and rotate it gently and slide it in and out. It stimulates those muscles and reminds them to push. Sometimes it works in minutes, other times it took an hour, but it USUALLY worked! I tried it every couple hours when it had been a few days. My baby was breastfed and didn't go every day for like 8 months. She started out once a week for the first 3-4 months, no matter how much she ate! The doctor said that every baby is different - just like adults!

OMG, I really had to look again to make sure this was written by someone else. This is the exact story of my 9 weeks olds life. When she was 3 weeks old she started to experience the same exact issues. We then traveled to CA for 2 weeks and I was so worried about going. We went from Similac Advanced to Sensitive, Nestle Good Start and now on soy. She continued to experience the same with soy (now on it for almost 5 weeks). Her dr. suggested Alimentum and that made her vomit for an hour with only one feeding of 4ozs. Continued soy and now she is finally going once or twice a day. I was having to use suppositories, Vaseline to stimulate her rectum, apple juice, gripe water, dark karo syru, colic calm gripe water that I paid $45 for an $18 dollar bottle just to have it overnighted to me. The only thing that sometimes helped her go was the Vaseline. Trust me I so feel your pain. It's hard to watch a tiny baby cry while sleeping because of the gas pains. I even took her to the Banner Children's Hospital 2 weeks ago and was there for 7 hours. Results were all normal but now I'm beating myself up for taking her and allowing this horrible nurse to poke my baby with needles 4 times to find a vein. I would suggest staying on soy and her little body will adjust. Hopefully quicker than mine did.

Definitely call the doctor. They need to know about these symptoms. The soy formula may even be hurting her tummy more.

You need to call your dr. Let him know you are going out of town and need an answer ASAP. It could be nothing but you need to make sure. If it is constipation you can probably use miralax, but don't do anything without consulting your dr. or his nurse. Good luck...

I would definitely call your doctor. However, I went through much the same thing with my little girl. The pediatrician had us give her a bit of molasses mixed in a bottle. This is probably similar to the corn syrup someone else suggested. Our doctor said molasses or karo syrup, but that molasses is more effective. They are both very long chain carbohydrates (but molassses is longer than karo syrup) and for some reason this means they draw water into the stool -- loosening things up. She had us start with 1 tsp in 4 oz of liquid. It can take 24 hours to take effect. It worked great with our daughter, and I don't think it has any negative effects if constipation isn't the issue. (We worried a bit about her getting all that sugar, but you don't have to give it that often - once a day max.) We also tried the glycerine laxatives and stimulating her with a thermometer, but only the molasses worked (and seemed like a much gentler remedy.) Definitey talk to the doc, but I think molasses could help.
