Hi. MY DS is a couple of month over 3. He is potty trained (except at night) as far as #1, but he refuses to sit on a potty for #2. Until recently he had a tendency (had since infancy) to have hard stools from time-to-time, so sometimes bowel movements are painful and he prefers to stand during them. But lately his stools have been more regular and softer , but still don't occur at regular times during the day. If we sit him down he won't poop, just pee and then get up and have a bowel movement. Any advice on how to potty train him for #2?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for responses, everyone. He is not wearing diapers, he is pooping in his undies, unfortunately. He will occasionally poop in the potty, but most of the time he does not.

I await answers to your question, as my DD is going through the exact same thing except she won't even sit on the potty to poop, even when we encourage. Good luck!

I know it sounds kind of mean, but when I knew my kids had to poop, I'd sit them on the potty and make them stay there (as in, hold them there if necessary). Once they poop on the potty once, and see that it is not scary or bad, they get over their aversion to it immediately. It worked with both of my daughters.

nope, it's not mean to force the issue. Without your help, he'll take forever to get over his fear (or need to be in control of this choice).

Pick your method & stick to it.....whether it's holding him on the toilet (be sure to have a chair for yourself!) or just simply eliminating all diapers. I'm assuming he's still in them, because if he's pooping in undies...that's just ridiculous & you need to stand your ground on this issue! Peace

I think eventually it works itself out. My son, would not poop siting down even in a diaper.

I think we caught him enough and just kept putting him on the toilet and it finally clicked.

This does happen to a lot a kids.

I've known kids (mostly from other countries) who "perch" on the toilet seat to poop because it is easier for them to poop in that squatting position. The sitting position we use on our toilets here is not a very natural position for pooping. Try showing him how to stand on the seat and squat. Maybe once he figures that out you can work on him learning to do it sitting down.
