So tonight we let my son go naked for a little while before his bath. He was sitting on my lap and did a few drops of pee pee on my jeans and stopped. So we were like "Great!!! He knew to stop so lets put him on the potty." Well we tried the big potty, the little potty, etc... He flat out refused to go on the potty. He kept grabbing at himself and I knew he had to go and finally we just put him in the bath and he even stood there and did the pee pee dance until we were done. Finally we got his diaper and pj's and he relaxed and went in his diaper. I have a 5 1/2 yr old daughter who basically potty trained herself at 3. Going somewhere other than a diaper seemed to be a great source of anxiety for him. I have never seen him like that before. Anyone know of any good books or video's on training little boys? Thanks in advacnce.

Get "Potty Training in a Day". I did it with both my boys and the first one was potty trained in a 1/2 day at 2 years 1 month and the second boy potty trained in 1 full day at 2 years 6 months. I promise you this book works and neither one of them ever had an accident and I never had to ask them if they had to go potty after they were trained. It was awesome.

I now have my daughter to train and expect to use the book again. Why miss out on a good thing.

Good luck!

P.S. I forgot to mention that my second boy was totally stubborn about the toilet like your boy and this book worked.

I don't have any book suggestions but you should consider trying a rewarding technique for potty training. Explain to your son that he should use the potty to do his business and when he does and does not need to use a diaper then he gets some sort of prize....here is a link with more description of this method. Seems to work well with many parents

I think books and videos are overdoing it. He may not be different from your daughter because he's a boy, he is just a different kid. Clearly he is not yet comfortable in going outside of his comfort zone (his diaper). He didn't stop peeing because he was on your lap, he stopped peeing because his diaper was not on. Take him to the toilet every hour and a half or so, consistently throughout the day so he gets used to the routine. If you're using disposable products, I'd suggest switching to cloth diapers or cloth training pants, so he'll really understand what happens when he pees - he'll get very wet
good luck

Hi there-we also started potty training our son at 2.5 yrs. We watched the Elmo potty video before we started to prepare him. And as for books, he really liked "a potty for me!" I would say it took us a good 2 months before we were all comfortable with his training- it was very challenging. Rewards worked for us, mini M&ms, sometimes a matchbox car... Poop- we promised everything but he fact of the matter was he had to be ready. It was messy, gross and frustrating. But he now he goes on the toilet! I don't know if this was a coincidence or what but he started consistently going when his older cousins were in town. He never saw then go but he knew they were. We tried not to pressure him with that-esp. since we just wanted to get through pee! Now we will start working on sleep the only time he wears a pull-up. And him not wanting to completely take off the bottom half of his clothes including shoes and socks everytime he goes :) Good luck and take your time! Don't put extra pressure on him or yourself.

My three year old son was having the same anxiety. He has PPD which is an austism spectrum disorder. I tried the elmo potty time video and book. These didn't work great for him. What I found did work was an iphone app I downloaded called potty time. I would play the iphone whenever I wanted him to sit on the potty. He really likes the song and plays it while he sits and goes potty. He also plays some other games that I have on the phone which relaxes him. I found that this really did help him.

My son just turned 2 and is potty trained. I used the Potty Predictor iphone app. It's really great. It has adjustable timers and a reward system. The really great thing is that it records and analyzes all data (success, accidents, and trying) and then will predict when he has to use the potty. When my son heard the potty music- he was so excited to run to the potty and try. Best of luck!
