Pregnant Kitty

I am the crazy cat lady, to a fault. I love animals and will rescue them. I take them to the vet and usually deworm and get their rabies shots. THen they can live in the house until I find homes. I have 3 dogs and 3 cats of my own.

So Saturday my daughter found a very pregnant kitty in the yard. Of course we brought her in and put her in the bathroom. We took her to the vet Tuesday. She has Feline Leukemia. Luckily, my other cats have not had contact, but she is in the house.

I can't give her away. She's sick and ready to whelp any day.
The vet wants $250 to put her down.

Does anyone know if pounds take strays off the streets from people, or would the fact that I found it and brought it in make me responsible for the cost of having the pound put it down?

I am bringing in all my cats to our vet to have their Feline Leukemia vaccine boostered.

I am just so sad about all this She is the sweetest kitty ever. She looks just like Figaro in Pinnochio. But I cannot pay hundreds of $$$ for a cat that we cannot keep.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

DVM MOMI debated pm'ing you on this one. Thank you.

I have been trying to get a hold of the pound, to no avail. There is a Humane Society here in town I will call them. Thank you mamas. She's not even our cat and we are all torn up about this.

And I use Banfield in Petsmart. THey are on the pricey side, but then alll vets here south of DC are pretty pricey.

ETA at 9:30pm Oh Bless her heart!! I now have 4 feral cats in my bathroom.

I am sorry you are going through this. To be honest, $250 to euthanize an animal sounds pretty extreme. Usually, animal shelters will euthanize if needed, no questions asked, and the cost may be minimal to none. Or you can take her in, tell them what is going on with her, and have them decide what is best if you are not going to keep her. There should be a Humane Society/SPCA facility in your area that also offers veterinary care at a lower cost. But if you choose to relinquish ownership, the animal is now in their care and it is their decision to do what they feel is in the best interests of the animal. Unfortunately, kittens born to FeLV positive mothers are often positive themselves, and most cats die within 1 to 3 years of being diagnosed with it, but I've also known some that have lived a lot longer than that and have been relatively healthy. Some shelters will automatically euthanize all FeLV and FIV infected cats because they are a lot harder to adopt out, but some shelters will let them live as long as they are healthy and not suffering and there are people out there who will adopt them because they already have cats that are positive and they make it their mission to give them a loving home for however long they can.

Good luck to you with whatever you decide. Personally, if I was the vet and this is what you decided to have done, I probably wouldn't charge anything. But that's me.

I would just call the humane society and ask them.

We had wild cats coming into our backyard. Eventually, one had kittens. We gathered them all up and took them to the Humane Society. They took them off our hands for free. Unfortunately, I think they had to euthanize them because we were unable to trap the mother cat and the Human Society won't bottle feed them.

oh, i'm SO sorry. bless you for taking in the poor little lady.
i got stuck in that situation. i left work (retail) one friday afternoon to find a kitten under my car, sick and starving, with a wound in her tail that was filled with maggots. i ran her immediately to the vet's office across the street, and of course they told me she was beyond help (i couldn't have afforded to get her doctored up anyway). the humane society was closed, and i couldn't take her back out of that office, so had to pony up $225 to have her euthanized. they even charged me to dispose of her little body.
i know people can't work for free, but i was so broke and so sick at heart. i had to do it, but i sure wish they'd have given me even a small break. or that i were strong and kind enough to be able to break her neck, but i'm too wimpy and squeamish.
i hope the pound works with you and this little girl is dispatched quickly and kindly.

You can try calling a local cat rescue to see how they might be able to help, or if they provide discounted vet care in your situation. I saw that you were in the DC area, and did a quick google search: Washington area rescue league came up, but there are a few others too (http://www.warl.org/). Good luck!

I went to a fairly expensive vet for euthanasia for my cat and it was $60. I fail to see how the cat being pregnant could make a difference in the cost when putting her to sleep. Your vet sounds like he's running a racket.
You're a saint for doing this. God bless.
