Probiotics for One Year Old

Hi Mommas!

My 14 month old seems to have developed a yeast infection. After reading previous question and answers on Mamapedia about cures for her problem, I've come up with the following solution: 1) eliminate a lot of her sugars (mainly from juice) 2) no more bubble bath :( she's gonna be sad about that 3) add more yogurt to her diet and 4) start her on a probiotic.

So here is my question, for those of you who have children on a probiotic, which one do you use and why? I found several online but just want to make sure I'm giving my DD the very best. Thanks for all your help!

So What Happened?

Thanks for all your responses Mammas! I did talk to my pediatrician today and he told me to use Lotrimn and Balmax to get it all cleared up for now, but I want to make long term changes in our diet to prevent this happening again (plus we all just need to eat better lol!). I'll look into all your suggestions and pick one that I like!

Probugs is a great kids probiotic smoothie. It comes in kid friendly ready to drink packs. My son LOVES them. You can find them in Sprouts.

I have given my son a probiotic from birth. The best thing to do (in my opinion) is go to a natural foods store, and get a children's probiotic from the refrigerated vitamins section. None of those will be bad, or inferior.

I have always gotten my son his probiotics at the health food store. When you talk to someone who works there they will tell you what is best.

The Stoneyfield Farm organic yogurts have a higher level and 6 different kinds of naturally cultured probiotics.

They also offer pill form in a chewable in most places that carry supplements and vitamins... you can crush it and offer it in a small amount of water or juice. If she crave sweeter stuff (like juice) - simply water it down to 75% water and 25% juice or buy Fruit2O or Propel flavored waters.

My son & I drink Yukult every morning. I pop in a straw for him and he drinks it within 10 seconds - it's that yummy! My mom gave it to me when I was a kid. It's great tasting and regulates your intestines. We use it because sometimes my son doesn't want to eat yogurt - the drink is easy to take and there's not much of it so he doesn't get full on it. He thinks it's a treat and calls it his yogurt drink. You'll find it in the dairy isle by the yogurts. It's about $3 for 5 drinks. Ideally you drink them first thing in the morning before you eat breakfast. Here's a link: http://www.yakultusa.com/

I got my stuff from the health food store; I can't recall what it's called. (I'm not at home or I'd look.) It's in powdered form and it's refrigerated (preferable). It's easy to mix into my kids food and they don't realize it's there. I usually put it in their yogurt smoothies.

Something else you can do for her is apple cider vinegar baths. The vinegar must have the mother; it will say on the bottle. In the tub, add nice warm water level to her hips or belly button and add 1 c vinegar. It's nice and soothing and completely safe. Let her stay in as long as she likes. It's great for adults, too! Don't worry about the smell, she shouldn't smell like vinegar after she's dried off.

Udo's Choice Infant Probiotics. It's a powder you can mix with anything and they don't know it's there. I buy mine on Amazon or the local health store.

Our pediatrician had us put our daughter on Florastor for Kids. It's expensive but seemed to work. There is a $7 off coupon on coupons.com and you don't have to sign up for the site or anything you can just print it off. When our daugher was an infant we got the liquid probiotics from Sprouts. They're in the vitamin section in the cooler. I think that the Florastor probably works better though. Good luck.

A lot of the Docs like Culturelle. They make a powder sachet for kids, or the caps can be poured into applesauce. The great thing for us is that they make a dairy free version.

While a probiotic supplement can get someone over a health hurdle, natural food sources are always our best choice for nutrients and probiotics. It's what our bodies were made to consume. You can easily make your own:
yogurt
kefir
kimchee
sauerkraut
fermented salsa
fermented carrots or radishes
kombucha or ginger beers/sodas

And there are many, many other foods that are probiotic. Just think of how our ancestors ate.

As for a supplement, Bio Kult is expensive but worth it. For more on traditional foods and the benefits of probiotics, see

I gave my kids Kefir and it helped with my son's yeast problem and my daughter's constipation.
