Hi,
I have a 4 month old baby girl who has her first cold. It started about 7 days ago when i heard her nose clogged up. I have been doing the following as recommended by friends and family: humidifier each night, pediacare vapor plug in, steam bath once a day, warm bath with johnson and johnson soothing vapor bath, nose aspirator, and little baby vapor rub. I am out of ideas and the poor thing is still stuffy. It isn't going away. She went to her pediatrician about 4 days ago for her regular visit and shots and he was aware of the stuffy nose and said it was not in her chest and to keep doing what i was doing. how much longer do i continue to let her go? do i need to bring her back to the doctor or will it eventually ever go away. Anyone expierence this before? oh and she has not spiked any fever yet. she seems happy content, eats, sleeps, etc but is always sounding like a clogged little baby. I feel so bad for her, she tries to breathe through the nose, you hear just sound horrible as she breathes or tries to breath through the nose and sucks all that gross stuff through the nasal passage.

What can I do next?

Is the snot still pretty clear and thin? It could be allergies, sorry to say. Soooooo many people I know are having allergy attacks right now with whatever is in bloom (yay Spring!) I wouldn't worry unless/until it gets thick and dark (green) and/or if she gets a fever or other symptoms. In the meantime, just continue what you're doing to keep her as comfortable as possible.

Sounds like you are doing all the right things. My son also had a cold when he was about 3-4 months. The only thing different that our pediatrician had us do was to get one of those little machines where you put a clear little plastic mask over the child's nose and mouth that the child inhales a medicated mist of sorts. I don't remember the name of the little machine or what type of medicine it was to help with the congestion. Did it 3 times a day I believe.

You could add salt drops to the regimen. Dissolve a bit of salt in hot water. Let it cool. Tip her so her head hangs back and place one drop in each nostril. Not sure about the exact ratio. Your pediatrician probably knows. Mostly, it just takes time and you are doing a good job keeping her as comfortable as possible. It is okay that they learn how to survive discomfort.
Prayerfully,

The poor little baby probably has allergies. I experienced this with my children. I don't know if a Doctor will give a baby that young allergy medicine. You will have to consult your pediatrician.

Hello,
I have a six month old little boy and we live in Clermont!
At the time my son was 3 1/2 months old when he got his first cold thanks to his cousins on Christmas Day. I waited a few days before taking him to the doctor because I didnt want to be called the paranoid first time mom.
He was sleeping fine, eating perfectly and just being the same happy baby as usual. When I took him to the doctor she laughed because he couldnt stop laughing at her.
She told me to do the same thing you are doing.
I thought I had heard it in his chest but it was just the mucus running from his throat.
The doctor said to do the saline in the nose and give him water/ juice to keep him hydrated.
Good Luck!

There's not really any else you can do. I would take her back to the pediatrician if she seems to be getting worse though. These colds can quickly turn into ear infections--but I even remember my ped telling me that regular colds like this can take two weeks to run themselves out--so just be patient, and like I said if she seems worse, starts running a fever, etc--just take her back to the dr...

Did you try to drop salt water in her nose? It helped with my son. The cold should be gone within 14 days. The worst days are the first 3 days (it shouldn't be a fever after the third day). If it's not getting better, you should consider an allergic reaction, e.g. pollen or food, but let the pediatrician know.
