Seeking Mom for Custom Made Window Treatments

We just re-decorated my 7-year old daughters room (heh...it was still her "baby" room, thought it would be a good idea to make her space a little more grown up!) I have material for the window valances that match the pillows on her bed, but I have no idea how to make them or have a sewing machine to even think about it. Anyone interested in helping please respond with your e-mail address. Thanks so much!

I have a VERY good friend to suggest. Her name is Linda Kurtz and she works out of her home in Wheaton. She's EXCELLENT and has done some very fine work. You can see her work and her contact info. at http://www.daystreetdesigns.com/. We finally convinced her to start making purses, too, and they are awesome! Hope this helps.

you can get this stuff at stores like walmart that all you do is put it on the seams and then run a hot iron on them (works wonderful for curtains), i believe its called "no sew" or something like that. if you go to the store and ask them about it they will know what you are talkin about, hope that helped

I sew some, but not too fancy of stuff. I have found that it is cheapest (from the purchaser end) to just go to the drycleaners and have them do it. For my baby's room I had bought some blankets for her bed & couldn't find a valance to match, so i took an extra blanket to the dry cleaners and they took it apart, cut it in half & made one long vailance for me. Turned out super cute for a whopping $20 fee (plus the cost of the blanket). Measure the width of your window & decide if you want tabs or one long pocket. They are simple to do - but at the drycleaner seem to come out best.

You might try the iron on tape for hemming clothes and drapes, you can pin them where you want them and tape the bottom as well as make a loop for the top, or you could make a few skinny loops and use showercurtain rings.

I'm pretty sure that if you go to Jo-anne fabrics they can show you how to make a simple curtain and they will even let you use their machines...I don't know if they rent the time on them or what.

My mother-in-law sews her own drapes and so forth. She's quite the semstress, but I'm sure that it would cost more to hire someone to sew them for you than it would to just buy new.

Maybe you could get a little handheld machine just for the curtains.

I am quite challenged when it comes to sewing but my mother-in-law has been working with me. She showed me how to do very simple curtains. It really is very easy. I can send you some simple instructions. I'm sure I have them around her somewhere.

K., I sew all my own curtains but when I'm in a hurry I buy fusible hem tape. You can fold over about two inches of material, wrong sides together, place the tape between the two layers at the raw edge and iron it. You can also do the seams the same way if they are raw and unfinished. I'd be happy to help if you need it. I'll send my email address

I bought a small plastic fence and cut off the legs that go into the ground. I then layed out the fabric and pulled it through to make it like a balloon valance. I then turned it over and filled each "balloon" with plastic bags to make it stay puffy. I attached this valance to the wall using metal screw=in large sized tea cup hooks. On the window I went to Ace Hardware and purchased a honey comb shade. It looked great, easy to wash, and the best part inexpensive but looked expensive.

Simplicity patterns are great, you can buy fusable material that you can iron on to your material so there is no sewing needed.

I was going to offer to help, but you are a ways from me. You got a lot of offers, so I hope something works out for you and your daughter.
If you used the no sew adhesive to keep your edges from fraying, you could fold over the top to make a rod pocket and install large grommets.
Or fold over the top a few inches and use a 1/2" grommet every 6 inches or so, then install one of the cable style curtain rods, or make your own with cable from a home store. Ikea had short rods like this.

Good luck decorating!

Valances are not that hard to make. I have even "hand-sewed" them. Joanne fabrics usually has someone who can help you learn to cut and sew. Just ask. I would not pay for someone to help me if I could avoid it. If you really can't do it, I really like the idea of the dry cleaner. My drycleaner has actually done so much sewing on my garments (alterations etc), that I cannot believe I have never thought of them for small projects.

get one of those curtain rods that looks just like a pole across the top of the window and drap the material over the pole like a valance and get the drapes to cover the windows.
