Hi
I'm having my first child in the very near future and am looking for a pediatrician. We'd like a physician that supports breastfeeding and holistic remedies for children.

We were recently told about Pedios in OP and would like to know of anyone's exp with the doctors there.

What can I do next?

We see Dr. Haukness at Pedios and have been pretty pleased. She is very supportive of breastfeeding and helpful with other questions and concerns that have come up.
I did interview a few other peds. a few months back and have decided to stick with Pedios. We have seen the other Dr.s there too and were very pleased AND they have the best appt. policy I have found. They have an early morning Q session, Sat. sick appts. and other off hour and holiday call in times.

Jessica,

I bring my daughter to River Forest Pediatrics. Dr. Mercola has been great. He's very patient with my daughter (more so than some of the nurses), especially when she's squirmy and uncooperative during check-ups. He was supportive of breastfeeding, although I don't know his philosophy on holistic remedies.

Hi Jessica. When I moved here a year ago, another local mom suggested the family practice doctors at 6645 W. North Ave. (they are now affiliated with Elmhust Clinic). I am so thankful she did! We have been extremely happy with this practice. All three doctors are wonderful. Our whole family goes there. Dr. Mary Hutton is especially terrific with kids (and is a mom herself, which always helps!)... very much as you describe. They have always gotten us in on the day we call, usually first thing that morning. ###-###-#### is the number... best of luck to you!

My 13 month old son sees Dr. Hawkness at Pedios and we have been very pleased. She certainly supports breastfeeding and even referred us to a wonderful service when we were having some problems. I can not attest to her outlook on homeopathy. We have also had great experiences with Dr. Wagner, also at Pedios, during a couple of emergencies when Dr. Hawkness was not in or on call. The nurse's are wonderful and only complaint I would have would be their front desk. Best of intentions, but has a tendency to come across a little harsh. Overall, we are very happy we found them. Good luck to you!

I've found Dr. Haukness at Pedios to be supportive, medicine cautious, and very knowledgeable. I'm not sure how she feels about holistic remedies, but I would suspect that she would be respectful and share what info she has. I have also really appreciated Pedios in an emergency. When my youngest had an accident at school, they saw him immediately, and arranged for x-rays and an orthopedist within hours.

Pedios is our practice, and my boys see Dr. Claus (the male doctor - there are also two female doctors) as their primary pediatrician, although we've seen all of the doctors at one time or another. I really like them. They were not our pediatricians when I had my first child, Ad-Park Pediatrics was. I don't like them at all and one of the reasons was that they were so unsupportive with questions I had about breastfeeding.

Although personally, I'd plan to work with a lactation consultant the first time - they really are the experts.

I had the BF thing down by the time I met the doctors at Pedios, though (when my second son was a newborn) so I'm not sure about that. My guess is that 90% of the babies they see are breastfed.

I think they are pretty middle-of-the road as far as being interventionist about illnesses. One of the women doctors (I can't remember which one) is much more medicine-cautious than Dr. Claus is, I've noticed.

The office staff is very nice; it's easy to get in for an illness, and they have good hours. They also have someone answering the phone in the early morning if you just have questions.

I tried Pedios and wasn't thrilled with them. I didn't feel that I got the breastfeeding support that I needed. I use Drs. Locke and Uchitelle in River Forest and they are both great. ###-###-####
What I found in looking for a ped that was breast friendly and anti CIO was that they really don't exist. I've given up on turning to the ped for advice other than medical issues. I've realized that they are no better at giving advice as mothers than my friends or family or mamasource. IF you are willing to travel, Homefirst is supposed to be great, I just wasn't willng to make the drive, especially in the first year when you go to the office so often. As much as I don't rely on my ped for parenting advice, Dr. Locke is also very open minded and non-judgemental. She'll give you ideas but doesn't have that Doctor God complex that so many of them do. Good luck and join the Oak Park Mom's Meetup group to get to know other mom's in the area. IT's a great group. Also, La Leche Leage meets at Pilgrim Congregational Church at Lake and Ridgeland the third tuesday of every month at 7 pm. They are a godsend.
