I would like to get some pregnancy photographs with my husband before our little one is born. Anyone know of any professional photographers they would recommend? Also if you have had them done yourself, what kinds of outfits did you wear? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

What can I do next?

Hi N.!

Congrats on your baby. I can't help you with a photographer, since I am not in your area, but I did get pregnancy photos taken - at the local Target photo studio, of all places, and they turned out really nice. It wasn't as expensive as the other photographers can be and the photographer we had had a lot of experience with pregnancy shots. My husband and I wanted the photos to be pretty casual, so we wore jeans and button front shirts. She got some really nice photos of us both with the belly covered and with the shirt open over the belly. I also took another shirt (since they take 12 shots all together) that was one of my favorites during the pregnancy to wear in some photos of just me w/out the hubby. I guess my advice would be that if the photographer is going to allow "costume" changes, to take at least one of your favorite outfits during this time in your pregnancy to have a couple photos taken in it. I always end up getting something new when I get my pictures taken, and that photo session was no exception, but it was nice to also have some in one of my favorite shirts from that time before it got packed away with all my maternity wear. Also, just make sure to have a conversation with the photographer before your appointment. He/She would probably have a book of their prior work you could get ideas from or at least be able to maybe give you some ideas. I have seen some absolutely beautiful pregnancy work from one of the studios here, but those mommas had a lot more...shall we say "confidence" than I had and bared a lot more than I would have ever dared! In one the momma was draped in a sheer sheet with her arms hugging her belly. You couldn't see her body, just the sillouette of her shape, and the photo was beautiful! It is such a special time, just have fun with it! Congrats again and good luck on finding the right photographer!

Karyn Johnston in the Ogden area is a really amazing photographer and incredibly skilled and putting her subjects at ease. I am sure she'd go to Salt Lake. You can see her work at www.kjohnstonphoto.com, and more recent galleries at www.kjohnstonphoto.smugmug.com. For $125, she will spend a couple hours with you and get you all the shots and poses you'd like. Then you can order whichever you'd like through Smugmug, whuch is high-quality and reasonably priced. For $25 more, you can get a CD of your photos.
I was so excited at how good Karyn was with both me and my husband and with my kids and newborn when he came. She's a mom, too, and not at all put off by a pregnant belly. I liked wearing a sweater with just one button buttoned so my belly was showing and a smooth turtleneck.

My husband is a photographer, so I've always just had him do mine. He only does location shoots though (for the "studio" look, we just put up a backdrop behind me). If you are interested, I'd be happy to send you some of what he's done, just email me at ____@____.com

I would also recommend Rosie at Bud to Bloom (www.budtobloomphotography.blogspot.com); she has a slideshow of some of her work up on that blog. She's more expensive than some place like Target or Kiddie Kandids or somewhere would be, but her work is great.

I would also recommend http://cindibrabyphotography.blogspot.com, and http://focusphoto-niki.blogspot.com. Both ladies do an amazing job, and all of the photographers I've listed have quite different styles!

I do have friends who have just gone the Target/KK route and it has turned out ok, but definitely a different look than you are going to get with an independent photographer.

I had a nightmare experience with Target. Half of the pictures were dubbed "obcene" and were not developed. It was because my BELLY was exposed. It wasn't erotic in anyway, I thought they were tasteful and artistic. I know of a person in Grand Junction,CO that may travel, I'm not sure. But she might also know of someone who works in your area. SHe is an amazing photographer, and is worth investigating. Here is her website. If anything, just look at her work. It is stunning. Especially the maternity shots.

We used Heather Mickey for our newborn twin photos, but she also does pregnancy photography and did some pictures for my aunt when she was pregnant. She is in Layton, but I believe she would travel to you. We really enjoy her work, and I think she has some deal where if she does your pregnancy photos you can get a discount on newborn photos, but I'm not quite sure. Here is her website:

Hope this helps! Good luck with the pregnancy!

I can't recommend Jessi Stringham highly enough!

http://www.jessistringham.com/

Be sure to check both the website and her blog for examples of her work. My husband and I did both a maternity session and a newborn session and Jessi was incredible both times. She will send you a list of suggestions as far as what to bring to the session, and she makes you feel so comfortable and beautiful. She will basically take whatever pictures you want, but always has ideas of her own to help you out. Really, it was an amazing experience. We also took our adorable daughter in for a newborn photo session and the pictures Jessi took are absolutely priceless. If you check out her website, Nora is our daughter... :)

She's fun and cool and a joy to work with. Highly, highly recommended.

My friend Angela and I do photography. I mention her because she has had more maternity clients than I have but we often work together. We have some ideas that have turned out really cute. (As far as what to wear) We can do some indoors with lights at my house and outdoors as well if that's what you like. We work out of Lehi. I provide you with a CD and a recommendation of local professional printers that I use. I would recommend you do it at around 36 weeks.

My website is currently under construction but I have a blog. (It doesn't have any maternity pictures on it though, it's kind of new) But I have some newborn examples (which I would also love to do :)

Here's Angela's, her main website has some maternity examples

Awwww... if I was in Salt Lake I would totally do it for you but I'm in Colorado Springs.
I do know a few photographers in the Salt Lake area though so if you'd like contact info then just let me know and I'd be happy to pass it on.
Just find someone you're comfortable with and make sure you check out their work. The best advice I can give you is to ask to see a Maternity Session that they have done from start to finish. That way you'll get a better idea of what you'll be getting when you get your proofs back.
Photographers only put their best work up on their websites. And with so many photographers flooding the market these days (and many that are a little less then qualified) you want to make sure that when you get your images back your going to have more then one that you absolutely love. Another photographer friend of mine always says "Even a blind squirrel gets lucky and finds a nut once in awhile" meaning that if someone shoots 1,000 pictures they'll probably luck out and get one good one. But, if you're really good you can shoot 100 pictures and come out with 80 good ones. :)
As far as what to wear.... Do you want to be fully clothed the whole time or do you want bare belly shots too?
I always love the ones with the mom-to-be in just a white cotton night gown or men's dress shirt. I also always suggets solid colors... especially black and white since you want the attention the be on your belly and not your clothes.
Good luck.... maternity pictures are always so much fun!
