I have two kinds of sippy cup one with a soft spout, that when you bite down on it the liquid comes out. I used these with my older one and they were great. Easy to clean, leak proof and just plain simple!! -(I think they are munchin brand?) He just bites down on it and stares at me- it seems like maybe he is getting the hang of it but does not like to drink from it. Then i have another one it has a hard spout. I knew it would be difficult for him, but i gave it a try. Nothing! Any suggestions? any ideas of differnt variety's of food?? Thanks Happy Holidays!

Go buy and ICEE with a straw, show him how to suck the straw then see if the sippy cup works better. Its fun for Mom and son to play with an icee and learn something new!

My son didn't pick up sipping until around 8 months. We started off with a small juice box. It has a straw in it and is really easy for them to learn to suck) You can find these small plastic juice boxes at Target and Walmart.

I started my daughter on a sippy cup about this time but I hated to use the no spill kind. Yes it was convenient for me to not have to clean up a mess but I didn't think it was good for her. I just used the dollar general cups with the plastic snap on lids and then I moved to a handle cup but took the rubber stopper out of the top. By doing this, my daughter knew that when you drink from a cup, the liquid comes faster, no sucking required and I fel that it was a better way to transition to a real cup. She also learned form the beginning that she always had to set her cup up right on the table so it woudln't spill. I find that many kiddos that have the no spill cups just through them about anywhere because in a way, it was like a bottle, just bigger.

Just keep trying. Offer it at every meal and even between meals. My daughter did the same thing and one day she just got the hang of it! We spent at least a month trying to teach her before she got the hang of it!

I personally think 7 months old is a little young for a sippy cup. I think they are just getting used to holding the bottle alone by this age. I took the bottle away at 1 yrs old. Introduced sippy cups at 10 months here and there. He's probably wanting to suck on a soft nipple from a bottle not on a cup even if it has a soft spout.
AS far as food I would introduce one vegetable at a time wait a few days to make sure there is no allergic reaction. HE should be able to have potatoes and very finely cut strips of turkey with a vegetable for Thanksgiving. I think just giving him several more weeks before the sippy cup is introduced.

Both of my kids skipped (on their own) the regular sippy cup and went straight to a straw. My 3 yo daughter uses the "sports" type sippy cups for Mother's Day Out and my 14 mo likes whatever she is using. I assume he still takes a bottle, too. It seemed like it takes them a bit when they have both. Just keep trying. Goos Luck!

I would just try a couple of different kinds, but don't expect him to drink much from it just yet. I think the straw ones are easier sometimes (except my daughter who was over a year old before she learned to drink from one...go figure!), so you may want to try one with a straw. If you have just introduced the cup, he probably won't take to it right away. I wouldn't worry about it. He doesn't need the extra liquid right now, and by the time he does, he will have figured it out.

Have you tried the kind with the straw? My son actually does alot better with those than the bite down cups thy are pretty easy to clean and the valve helps resist spills...either way, Good luck!

Maybe it's not the sippy - maybe he just needs time to practice with it. He's still a little young. Mine were both still exclusively breastfed at 7 months and wouldn't have looked twice at a sippy!!! But later, they had no problems with them.

I only have one little fella but what I have done is I started introducing all kinds of sippy cups at that age but didn't really expect him to drink from them. I just wanted him to get the idea of a cup and just start messing with it. Around a year or so he started actually drinking from them but only juice and water. Now at 16 months my little guy is a pro. I really like those munchkin cups too, the soft spout seemed to help my little guy transition from the bottle to a cup. Now he will just take any sippy cup you give him. Good luck!

My son never liked the sippy cup, never got the hang of it so I went straight to using a cup with a straw and we never looked back. He learned to use a straw much easier and we never had to break him of the dreaded sippy cup habit. We use the disposable cups in multi-colors (I forget the brand but I get them at Target or HEB), they have a tight fitting lid and straw so no leaks.

I took the valve out at first and helped them to drink. 7 months old is not too early because it may take several months to get used to it. At least this way the juice or cold water naturally went into their mouths without sucking. they got used to getting good liquids from the cup (milk only from the bottle, juice only from the cup.) When they were quite used to it I put the valve on it or more recently I used the Nuby cup that has a clear soft spout. Then they sucked because they KNEW there was something good in there and were trying to get it out!

I also introduced the regular cup (no lid) and by 13 months my newest baby could drink from a water bottle or cup without spilling.

Foods are easy- whatever you eat but smaller. You might start out blending them up with some water and then increasing texture at 8 months and by 9-10 months he should be feeding himself (green beans, mac n cheese, carrots, potatoes, corn, broccoli, ect...you know there's a balanced diet when there's foods of all colors (each color represents a different vitamin!)

Ok, my kids grew up in Germany.... skip the sippy cup and try a regular plastic cup? Maybe one with a straw (kind you get from restaurant with lid). Just watch intake as liquid can be very hard to control in their mouths and throat.

The one that pours might work. There are also some that have straws. Let him see you get milk or water through a straw and let him try it. Both of course can be poured out by our helpful little one's.
