Situational/seasonal Depression

Heya mamas!!

I have a question about depression. I have suffered from it on and off for a few years now...basically since I had my last son, a tubal, and started having serious hormone issues. I plan on getting into an OBGYN soon, but we have to deal with my hubby's medical issues with his back and possible surgery before I can (he hasn't met his deductible yet...so it is going to cost us a fortune out of pocket).

My question is this...my depression has become very prevelant in the last few weeks with this dang RAIN, being stuck in the house for days/weeks at a time with our 4 children, hubby working 60+ hrs/wk at his new position which leaves me dealing with everything else alone!!! Is there anything I can use OTC, herbal wise to help get through these "down in the dumps" until I can get to a dr? It literally takes every ounce of energy I have just to do the normal tasks at home during the day....I know from experience it is all from depression. I have also started having anxiety attacks again. Sometimes just hearing my kids arguing over silly little things grates on my nerves so badly I feel like I am going to explode! I know what is going on, so I can keep it in check...but some help so I don't have to fight with MYSELF all the time would be nice.....

Anyone else dealing with this?? What have you ladies tried that has worked? I plan on seeing an OBGYN about bio-identical hormones...but will be a while before I can pull it off...any suggestions????

thanks in advance ladies!!!
hugs
~H.

So What Happened?

Heya ladies!!! Once again you have come through for me!!

I had completely forgotten about taking the b-vitamins and such! I used to do it all the time. As far as the omega 3's?? I am supposed to take those for my PVC's that I have...got them totally under control with fish oil and magnesium supplements! So that being said...here is waht I am doing that is really doing the trick..I feel better than I have in ages!!!

After breakfast or lunch (whichever I eat first that amounts to anything) I take 2 fish oil gelcaps, 1 magnesium supplement, 2 vitamin e gelcaps, 1 zinc (trying to get my immune system back up to par), and a balanced b-50 complex (has ALL the b vitamins balanced out in one pill)...I started that the day I originally posted this and have been doing it since. I must say that almost instantly I have the energy to get through my day and no more down in the dumps! I have been doing more with my kiddos and everyone in the house is doing so much better! I am going to do more research on increasing my immune system, but for now (with what I had on hand), I seem to be back on track!!!

Thanks again for all your love and support!! I am also going to add in st johns wort at bedtime when I head out to walmart again to pick some up...I don't know what I would do without you ladies to think for me, when I just can't seem to think at all!!!

Happy 4th everyone!!
~H.

Hi H.,
I did experience what you are...and yes some sunshine would help so if you can get out some. Something else I found was the EPA part of Omega 3's is shown to work for depression and bipolar disorder. I could tell a difference and I did not even take the recommended dosage. I believe I read to take 180mg per 10 lbs of weight...yes it is alot, but from what I read it works. You may do a search and see what the research found. I found one and provided the link below...then, when I was reading further, the exact one I was taking was recommended on the site that I had found out about Omega 3's and depression. Let me know if you need more info...I will try to find the sites I used but I noticed a difference within an hour of taking them.

I have heard from more than one of my girlfriends the "London Blues". They are all getting a little anxious from all of the rain and one just breaks down and cries when she sees it! Yes, there is an over the counter med it is called St. John's Wort. Does it work? Well, it will eventually. About 4-6weeks into it you should feel a difference. For now I say go and invest in a yoga mat and a yoga CD. You can get a start up kit at Target for around $14-20.00 and drink lots of water. I know that sounds so hokey, but I promise it helped me. I was living in the mountains where your closest neighbor felt like miles away and it was almost 2 hours to the nearest grocery store during winter. I got cabin fever and felt a little depressed during the snow months. So a friend recommended the yoga. I also found that I was dehydrated and that is what was causing my headaches and such. The dehydration was brought on by the dry climate and no appetite. No appetite there is really no reason to drink. Here is an idea during the rain showers (no lighting of course :))throw on a bathing suit, round up the kids, grab some water guns, water ballonons, etc... and go out side for a good old fashioned water fight. I went out and played in the snow so for you go out and play in the rain! We did it all of the time. Talk about free entertainment. The second you bust your bum chasing your kids through the soaking grass will put a smile on your face and make you laugh out loud! This will also help the kids to see you smile again, the added bonus your children will too be smiling!!!!

Have a great day playing in the rain!

My depression off and on was mean bosses and divorce. I could not shake it but a friend prayed with me daily. I think laughter is the best remedy. Find things to laugh about. Get those children into naps or quiet time and read, focus on setting goals every day. It takes little step every day to become what God wants us to become. Keep mentoring those children and look for lessons in everything they do that gives you the opportunity to teach. God Bless G.

First of all, make sure that you get plenty of sleep at night, whatever it takes. What has worked for me is St. John's Wort. It takes a little while to really feel the difference but the same thing occurs with any antidepressant, OTC or prescription. And it is really cheap.

I sounds like your overwhelmed and having to wait for insurance doesn't help. I can understand. you need a support system or someone that is able to come in and give you a break until you can get into see someone. Look for an association for depression and go to weekly meetings. Start journaling your day. It helps to see it on paper what your thoughts and day was like. Then get saavy on ways to change the mishaps of the day. OTC's would take a long time to work into your system. Like regular meds that take up to 6-8 weeks. Make sure you get a good nights sleep, even if it means getting the OTC sleep aids.

Hi H.,

I feel ya girl! Most people think of seasonal depression as something that only occurs around the holidays but really it can hit you anytime. Summer is such a hard time with all the kids being at home (bored) and the weather is not helpful.

Arbonne's Prolief cream (Blue label) is a botanically-based cream that offers options for a natural balance. It would be a good option to try until you can get in to see your doc. If you know someone that sells it you should contact them. If not, I have an extra one on hand right now and I could give it to you at wholesale since I have an account with them. It's less than $30 and lasts like 3-6 months.

Not trying to sell you something! I just know the cream is helpful. Both myself and my mom use it!

It will get better soon!

Hi H.! I feel you- all this rain is making everyone her homebound as well. I have three kids myself and sometimes find myself in the same situation with their fighting.

Anyway, there is this whole foods store in Plano that you might want to try. They have an aisle for homeopathic remedies which is actually very cool. A friend of mine introduced me to the whole concept. In the aisle you will find a book of different symptoms. You can find yours there, and then right beside it should be the name of the homeopathic medicine you will need. Give this one a try, it might help you.

Good luck!!

Get a sun lamp if possible. You can sit under it for a little while when you are reading or just watching table. Also don't close your shades. Let the sunlight in. Some natural sunlight is better than none.

As an outlet and definately an option, I'd love to invite you to be my guest. I am a Mary Kay consultant and I don't mean this in any way other then to help! I've seen so many women come through our events and just have some relaxing "me time" and feel so much better about themselves.

There would be no purchase necessary or any pressure to do so, guaranteed! Our motto is not "Selling Lip Sticks and Making Money"! Rather it is "Enriching Women's Lives". And we live by it! If we can't comfort and encourage then who are we?

Let me know what you think either way! This is an honest effort to reach out and give you a FREE way to get away and have a little pampering too.

Thanks!

Hi H.,
This is really a blessing because, I have been dealing with all these different emotions. One minute I'm down the next I'm fine and I find myself getting irritated over small things and I also feel like I'm gonna explode or go crazy whatever comes first. I have 4 boys a stay at home mom and my hubby rarely lends me a hand. So I can defenitly relate to you. I've been feeling so guilty, because I feel like I haven't been a good mother to my children. My boys are 12,almost 4, 2 and 7mts old. After my last I also had a tubal and had no help what so ever with my kids when I came home from the hospital.
Anyway, I really do not have or know of any OTC meds you can take. Thank You H. for being Honest and talking about what your gonig thru, I am glad I am not alone.

H.,

you have recieved some excellent advise here about St Johns Wort and seeking out other resources of information. Seasonal depression is quite often related to the fact that lack of sun and staying indoors leads to a lack of synthesized vitamin D that we get from the sun. Try taking caltrate or viactive with vitamin d. Calcium and D work together and it may help.

Dont forget to let us know how it worked for you.

Hi H. - I am glad you are back on track. Your entry has been on my mind for days, but since I have not dealt with depression, I did not feel qualified to answer. However, I felt your pain, and wanted you to know I had been thinking about you. If this feeling ever occurs again, I came across this while reading a publication called Bottom Line, and it made me think of you. There are a few sites they mention that deal with anxiety and depression that may help down the road. www.adaa.com and www.nimh.nih.gov. Both are said to have information on many conditions and they discuss treatments. There is also a self test for depression available at www.nmha.org. Whatever the case, please do what you can to try and put yourself first some days too...that's what helps me get through some of those rough, baby crying, nit-picking, whining days.

All my best,
C.
