Sleeping Position

My 8 month old daughter has always been an amazing sleeper. Ever since she could roll over she's been sleeping on her belly. Then she decided she likes to sleep on her belly with her legs under her and her butt in the air. I always thought it was so cute until recently she has been waking up about 2-3 hours earlier in the morning because she is soaked in her pee. When i take off her diaper only the top 1/4 of the diaper is soaked and the rest is on her. I've tried larger diapers but there is only so much the small portion of the diaper can hold before it leaks on her. I make sure to change her diaper right before she goes to bed. I know this is happening because of the way she sleeps. I have no idea how to change this. I've tried straightening her out but she always goes back to that position. When she gets up early to get changed it's so hard to get her back to sleep and get myself back to sleep again. If anyone has any ideas or has been through this i would love to hear from you.

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the ideas. We are going out today to get some over night diapers for her. However, it's like she knows i'm talking about her because ever since I've posted this she has not leaked out of her diaper at night!! But to be on the safe side we are going to use the overnights for the long nights.

My son and daughter have both slept this way, my son still does, I have used the night time diapers for both, and it worked out great. I only used them at night, so I would buy the large package and just use them for nights. Saves a little money as well, cause you are not washing clothes everyday and saves on water and detergent. Hope this helps.

My daughter has slept like that also since she has been able to roll over. I use pampers baby dry. I have never had that problem of her waking up wet and she really wets her diaper at night.

I have the same problem with my daugther, thats the way she sleeps. She used to pee through her diaper frequently at night. It has gotten better now that she is older and not having the nightly bottle. My advice is to just let her be and get her cleaned up as soon as you both get up. It gets better. My daughter is my first and I just take it one day at a time with that issue and it has gotten a lot better.

my daughter has been sleeping in that position since she was born. She is 21 months old now and she never wakes up soaked. When she was smaller she would wake up soaked at times. it might be because of the size of the diaper like u said because now that she wears size 4 and 5 she hasnt soaked herself not once. Not sure if this is any help but just thought i'd let u know ur not alone.

The same thing happens to my 6 month old. She sleeps with her legs tucked underneath her and her butt up in the air. I have tried almost everything but nothing has worked. I've done the same thing you have - I've flipped her onto her back before I go to bed but she flips right over. I know my comment doesn't provide any advice but I'm in the same boat you are.

Have you tried folding over the front of the diaper? It creates a little pocket to give the diaper a chance to absorb instead of the pee just running out. Works for my son (also a belly sleeper). Good luck!

Our daughter is 9 months and sleeps the exact same way! Maybe try another brand of diaper other than yur current choice? We use Huggies and have never had a problem. Good luck!

P.S. Our daughter used to sleep through the night and lately wakes at least 3 times a night. My husband and I are exhausted! Maybe I should post a question on how to get her back to her old ways - haha!

Hi M., Have you ever tried a different brand of diapers. I have found that some are better at night than during the day. I would try Luvs and Huggies overnights. I use them both and have been happy with the results. She is going to sleep however she feels comfortable and to change that well you might now be sleeping anymore, not a good thing for us Moms. Hope this helps you in someway. R. C.

Buy more bed sheets! You may just have to deal with it. Sometimes I have found on some of my kids the brand of diaper makes a difference. Not sure why. Two of my kids couldn't wear pampers as newborns cos they would leak over top. Really bizzare! You could set your alarm to change her in the middle of the night.

I doubt you will be able to change your baby's sleeping position. So, is she going to sleep on the bottle or perhaps having a lot to drink right before bed. She is old enough now that you could lessen that feed. Or if she is going to sleep on the bottle, try using a pacifier instead. Mine have always continued to still sleep thru the night on a lighter tummy.

I have the answer!!!! Huggies overnight diapers (Genardis, CVS and Giant have them). She would use a size 4. The secret is the top. Pull the front all the way up and fasten really tight and she will never leak again. My 2 and half is still wearing them. Good luck!

THe Huggies nighttime diapers can come up really far in the front if you put them on that way. We do because my Son always soaked the front of his pajamas overnight. I think we had him in the 5's even though he didn't need them during the day. No other diaper seemed to make it through the
night.

You could try cloth diapers. I find them to be more absorbant & I use them all the time. I would recommend a prefold diaper with a wool cover for the night time. You cannot buy these in the store, you have to buy them on line. I really like www.greenmountaindiapers.com, but other places sell them as well. I recommend the aristocrats wool cover. If you don't fold over the top it can stretch all the way up to your baby's chest. The wool will absorb any excess moisture. And it shouldn't matter what position she sleeps in. Also you will need a snappi fastener to properly attach the cloth diaper to itself (its very easy).
Caring for cloth diapers is also easy. You can wash the prefold diapers on hot in a regular washing machine w/just a little bit of detergent then dry them in the dryer. Let the wool covers air dry every day, then once or twice a month wash them in the bathroom sink with some baby shampoo. Rinse them out then let the soak in water w/some lanolin for about 15 minutes. After that let them hang dry. Its really easy.
We have never had a nighttime leak with our son using these diapers.

Hi M.-

Is it possible to slightly adjust her feeding routine so that you are giving her her last bottle/drink an hour or two earlier in the evening? If you have more time between her last drink and when you put her down, you might get more of the pee into the diaper you change right before she goes down.
Also--- if she goes back to sleep more easily in the middle of the night than early in the morning (when she is currently waking up), then maybe try changing her diaper right before YOU go to bed? That will at least fix the problem of you having trouble getting back to sleep. If she’s a pretty heavy sleeper, you might be able to pop the new one on in her crib without having to wake her up fully.

Good luck!

Hi M....I wish I could say I had an answer for you. I'm having the same issue with my son. He also sleeps on his belly with his butt in the air. He wakes up soaked most mornings. Other than waking up to change them in the middle in the night, I don't think there is anything we can do. I'm looking forward to seeing if anyone else has a workable solution.

hi M.. my 8 mo old son sleeps the same way and it is adorable. we haven't had any leaking problems and his diaper is soaked when he gets up. you may want to try a different diaper brand. bigger diapers won't fit as snug and will likely leak. we use the pampers size 3 baby dry (i think that is what it is called). there are two different styles in that size, so make sure it is the baby dry ones. he is never wet from a leaky diaper and his skin stays nice. i hope this helps.

Hi M.,
My 12 month old son did the same thing when he was 10 months. I also tried the larger diaper at night and it only worked sometimes. I also tried the plastic diaper covers at night and added a burp cloth (cut in half and folded over) onto his belly, under his onsie and tucked the bottom into his diaper so the plastic would not rub against his belly. This worked for me. One other thing that I found to help was to stick something big and bulky under his mattress so that he would sleep on an incline. This not only helped him breathe better when he was congested, but also kept the leakage inside the diaper. You know since they aren't really allowed to have pillows yet. Hope this helps, Good Luck,
A.

M.,
Unfortunately you can not do a thing about her sleeping position. If that is what is comfortable for her then I would not bother her. My little man who is 11 mo's old too sleeps on his belly with his legs under him. Only once in a blue moon will the top of his jammy pants be damp but I use extra absorbent diapers such as Pampers. They do really work. Also even though it is hard try to limit water or juice fluids in the evening before bed with of course the exception of formula. I found the more he drank later in the day the more likely his diaper will be soaked for a record heavy diaper! Hope this helped and good luck!

Three suggestions that might help... Try a more absorbent diaper for at night. The supreme diapers are usually thicker. They might help at night. Also, they make diaper inserts for inside the diapers (both cloth and disposable). Try doubling over a diaper insert and placing it near the front top of the diaper. The third suggestion is to elevate her mattress. This way even with her rear lifted the diaper may be level and may help keep the urine in long enough for the diaper to soak it up.

Wearing a larger diaper may actually increase the problem if it doesn't fit as tightly as her regular size diapers. A diaper that is too big (even slightly) can gap a little meaning more liquid escapes onto her clothes and bedclothes.

I would probably try the diaper inserts before anything else. They are made so that you can lay them lengthwise from the front to the back of the diaper. Since she is having a problem only with the front, I'd fold it in half and place it in front to catch the liquid. If they are a bit expensive and you aren't sure they are going to work, try doubling over a sanitary napkin and sticking it in the front of her diaper. It may just be that she is urinating too quickly for the diaper to soak it up, too. The sanitary napkins are made to soak up leaks fairly quickly. If you have them at home already, you could try one instead of a diaper insert to see if they are going to work. If it works for you, you can check to see which is less expensive, sanitary napkins or diaper inserts (assuming you can find the inserts. I thing Toys R Us and Babies R Us have them).

Anyhow, I hope this helps. Good luck.

This is just and idea, and I don't know if it would work for you or not:

Depending on the time span between her bed time and yours, could you try and change her diaper before you go to bed without waking her up? I know when my son was still in diapers we could do this after a car trip or something, and he was sound enoug asleep that even if he stirred a little bit, we could change him and he'd settle right back to sleep. If there is a 2 or 3 hour gap between your bed time and hers, it may be worth a try to see if you can change the diaper on her while she's sleeping. Then she'd be going through the second half of the night with a new diaper that may have a better chance at holding everything in.

Good luck!

I find that a SMALLER diaper actually helps with our daughter. If I remember to make sure it's good and tight around her waist and sitting low on her belly, she wakes up dry. I use Pampers Baby Dry, but I think it's a matter of figuring out what works best for your daughter's body.

Hi M.,
I have a 4yr old boy and an 18 month old girl and they both leaked out of their diapers at different times as babies. Huggies overnight diapers worked really well for us, but they only start at size 3 and they rarely have size 3 available (found it at diapers.com but is very expensive), most carry size 4 or 5. FYI, Genuardi's is doing a special on Huggies overnights (size 4 & 5) for card members and i believe the price is $8.99 per pack till Jan 22nd. I bought 4 packs this week ;-) The other thing i did with my daughter when i was looking for the overnights was to put a regular diaper on her and then put a bigger diaper on over top of that at night time, it worked, but was really bulky. she didn't complain though...

He was wearing size 3 but I couldn't find the any night times in size 3. Since then I have found that Toysrus carries size 3 also. Maybe nite times would help you like they helped us. good luck!

Hi M.,

We have had the same problem. What we have done is go up a size diaper for night time whenever she starts to leak. We use pampers and we actually just started using size 5s for night time. She's still in 4s during the day. It works great! My daughter is 13 months and about 18 pounds and she is in size 5s which say they start at 27 pounds, I think. Anyway, they fit her fine, so you really don't need to pay attention to the weights on there.

I hope that helps! It really has worked great for us!
