When my daughter was in school and we had a stink bug in the play they used a big black garbage bag with pieces of garbage attached to it. I remember thinking at the time that the child would be teased but all the kids loved it.

My niece just called me, in a panic, because she found out today that she has to provide her 2nd grader with a Stink Bug costume by April 21st. They don't sell them on the internet and she isn't much into sewing (but anyone can use a hot glue gun!). Does anyone have any ideas on how to pull this off?
Thank You!

Felt is super easy to use and fairly inexpensive! Seems like the stinkbugs I looked at on-line are brown so I'd dress the little one in brown tights/leotard (for a girl) or brown sweats/turtleneck (for boy) and cut out the "back" of the bug out of brown felt. If she wanted to make it stiff she could use fusible interfacing which would make it look cooler. She could do the same for the legs so they would stick out on the side. She would probably have to do some very simple sewing to get the legs to stay in place properly. Still trying to think how I would attach it to the kiddo!
She could make the back "shell" out of cardboard and string some yarn or something through it so he could wear it like a backpack. Definitely the foam visor that was suggested below and decorate that. Good luck. Should be fun!
My daughter in Kindergarten just had a "Bugz" performance that had a stink bug in it. He was just dressed all in black. Maybe she could do something of the same, but make a head piece that would help with the effect. One of those foam visors and look up a picture on the internet to see how to decorate it as a stink bug head.
A beige or green short set or bodysuit, dark tights and long sleeves (this will be 2 sets of legs), attach stuffed dark hose reinforced for stiffness (or painted paper towel cores - you could probably even use pipe cleaners for a 2nd grader) for other 2 sets of legs, cut out cardboard and draw details for wings, beige or green skull cap with pipe cleaner for antennae.
You can get a good picture of a stinkbug on Google Images.
Sounds like fun!
I don't have advice for the body part, but think about adding a gas mask if you can find an inexpensive small one -- or goggles if not to give "bug eyes".
