my 4 month old has a smelly ear (like dirty feet). i have cleaned it with child safe q-tips but, it still stinks. he doesn't seem to be fussy and has been sleeping and eating fine. also no fever or drainage. is this normal or maybe a start of an ear infection? i am out of town right now so, i would rather not take him to a doctor unless necessary.

What can I do next?

Hi. My 5 year old daughter gets this too. It sometimes stinks so bad it makes me gag!!! She gets a lot of ear infections with no warnings, fever, cough, etc. But I have taken her to the dr. numerous times and it is an inner ear infection. They give me drops and after a day it clears up. Good luck!!

I would definitely just leave his ears aloneand not even put baby safe qtips in it and just call your pediatirican when you get home. I am sure he is fine. He could just have some sinus back-up too that's causing some odor.

Its rare but there could be something IN his ear....I had a friend who had a dead gnat in his ear that stunk when it was decaying (not a pretty thought but)....the doctor could only see it with his little ear poky light thing...he took it right out and rinsed it out and it was all better. (my friend was 24yrs old at the time....he couldn't feel it, but he could smell it!) The doctor said that the gnat kind of bit his skin and thats why he couldn't wash it out himself-it needed to be pulled out. If nothing anyone else suggests work you may want to have the MD look in his ear.
Also it could be wax build up (again the MD would need to remove this-DON'T TRY TO AT HOME!!!....to much washing can cause that, those "remove wax" drips are horrible for that! So I wouldn't be trying to put stuff in his ear to clean it out because your really just packing it in more. The ear is meant to clean itself and not get messed with.

Could be infection..but usually they will run fever, be really fussy, etc..As long as there is no discharge or big fevers it can wait till you get home. It could even be some leftover gak (such a technical term) from delivery that is just getting dry and stinky now. Let us know..

I have never heard of an ear infection stinking? I would say check and make sure he didn't shove any food in there but he is too young I suppose to do that.....maybe just give your doctor a call and or speak with the office nurse and see what they say. Then if it still concerns you make an appointment for when your back home. best wishes!!

maybe some milk got behind or in his ear
also check the folds under his neck
my four month old is a juicy one and I have
to double check his underarms, and every crease
behind legs etc.
also if you are away from home check the surroundings
I wouldn't suspect an infection without fever or fuss

funky baby...usually its not the ear the folds behind the ear and neck. Pull the skin apart and sniff. My babies were little tubs of lard and I thought I got them clean. My mother undressed my oldest and began to spread his skim folds apart. An in the folds was dirt and dead, irritated skin. Once clean, powdered and dry..no more smelly kid.

I too would double check all the folds and crevices. Soaking in a bath doesn't do it sometimes you really need to pull apart the skin and wipe it all. But my oldest had a stinky ear when he was a little older 6 or so months, he had a build up of wax, didn't cause him any pain just stinky, we went to the dr and he pulled out a big chunk of yuck, I couldn't see it but when he looked with the ear thing he was able to see blockage,, he told me to stop cleaning his ears so much lol or more to stop cleaning deep inside I was pushing the wax further in and caused it to build up. If he isn't in any pain/fever I would wait till I got home.

I never tried this with one so young but I clean my kids ears with a little room temperature hydrogen peroxide. It bubbles whatever is in there right up.
