Stomach Flu - Roseville, MI

Long story - sorry in advance.
On the 28th we got together for a family Christmas. This is 2 days after my sister, her hubby and their 3 kids had the stomach flu. They said that they had not puked in 2 days so they came and enjoyed the family gathering... Well on the 29th my mom and dad went out with them and their kids. The next evening my mom starts puking (actually just once, but she NEVER pukes). She thought it was bad eggs and bacon from breakfast that morning. Only happened once, next day she was fine. Well today (Jan. 1st & 2nd since I haven't gone to bed yet) my 2 year old started with watery stools at noon and vomiting at 11 pm. I forgot to mention that they did bring a dish to pass, that we all ate. Is the virus in the food now??? Wouldn't we have gotten it before now if that's the case...How do I keep the rest of the house from getting it (me, my hubby, 2nd son and my dad - I assume my mom is in the clear). After my mom got sick I aired out the house, washed down and sanitized as much as I could. I was soooo hoping that would work... Any advice to keep from passing it in would be great. Thanks & Happy New Year!

What can I do next?

The same thing happened to us last May. It started with my niece, then my mom, my 3 kids, me, my husband, sister-in-law, even our babysitter and the girl who works in our office got it!!!! I think you're doing all you can environmentally, the only other thing you could do is work on your immune systems. Eat nutritiously (no sugar!), take a multi-vitamin, drink lots of water. My husband is a chiropractor, so adjustments are a regular routine for us as well. Knock on wood, that is the only time we have all gotten sick! Good luck!

K., I have some advice and It is not what you want to hear. You all will most likely get it. I have a 6 year old and a 2 year old and I have noticed once it was here, that was it!!! It may have escaped one or two adults , but it always hit the kids. It may be a good thing too cuz I have noticed my 6 year old has done well in the first grade. It is crazy how sick kids are, and I have gone nuts too, bleaching and lysol, washing hands, etc..... Well goodluck. You are doing all the right things.

Hi K.,
Sorry about the flu at your house. Depending on the virus and conditions they can live outside the body for a short time....you contract the virus, it replicates and takes a few days for the symptoms to occur. Unfortunately your family may or may not have contracted the virus from your sisters kids (you will never know for sure). If a particular strain of virus is prevelant it is often passed around a community such as a school, church, play group etc. The BEST way to keep your family safe from viruses is excellent and frequent hand washing. It has been proven the sigle most effective way to prevent spreading illness!!! You will seem like you suddenly have OCD but was their hands constantly. You and your husband as well. Cleaning and disinfecting dosen't hurt either =) Here is another tip which you may already do. Starting in the late fall I run a cool mist humidifer in my son's room CONSTANTLY. Most viruses enter your body through dried mucous membranes in your mouth or nose. So during the winter when the humidity is low and we have our furnances on etc it is a good idea to keep one in your childs room (especially when they sleep) even when they are not sick. I have noticed a big difference. Good luck and good health.

Hi K. -

Sounds like you're doing all you can to avoid others getting sick. Keep the fluids going and take a good mulitvitamin is good advice as well as continually sanitizing everything the sick person has come in close contact with. You need to remember that there is an incubation period before you actually show symptoms of being sick, too. If I remember correctly it's like 7-10 days so you may still get it. I wish I could tell you more. Good luck - Happy New Year!

Hi K. I really hope that you are all feeling better by now. I saw this and wanted to tell you that it does seem like you are taking all the right precaustions with one exception..This is such a simple one but most of us forget to do it. WASH HANDS constantly!! make a habit of having the children(especially) wash every time they go to the bathroom, after playing with friends, at the store, use the sanitizing wipes and when in doubt wash again. I know this seems so stupid and simple but as a nurse i can not stress this enough! another remedy that i personally swear by is Zicam, as soon as i feel "flu like" symptoms i rush to cvs and buy it! works great! I hope this helped you and that you are all back on your feet again, take care

It sounds like you are doing all that you can. Please don't be too mad at your family, it sounds like you are upset and blaming them. Unless you live in a bubble and never go the the grocery store or anywhere else, you could have gotten from anywhere. Tis the season for the flu. Good luck.
