...so where did this actually come from? I have always heard that it's time to talk about 'the birds and the bees' with kids... but I don't see how it relates. I get that bees pollinate flowers, and how that could be compared to sex... but I really don't see where the birds come into play. lol.

I think I'm missing something here... It's simple curiousity that got me wondering...thanks mommas!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks! I can see the correlation... but I still don't really get it. lol. Hopefully by the time my DD is old enough to get curious I will have come up with a better explanation.

From Wiki

"The birds and the bees" is an English-language idiomatic expression that refers to courtship and sexual intercourse, and is usually used in reference to teaching someone, often a young child, about sex and pregnancy. The phrase is evocative of the metaphors and euphemisms often used to avoid speaking openly and technically about the subject.
According to tradition, the birds and the bees is a metaphorical story sometimes told to children in an attempt to explain the mechanics and good consequences of sexual intercourse through reference to easily observed natural events. For instance, bees carry and deposit pollen into flowers, a visible and easy-to-explain example of male fertilisation. Another example, birds lay eggs, a similarly visible and easy-to-explain example of female ovulation.

Yeah, I am great fun at parties. :p

May the birds and their nest may have something to do with fertilization, babies etc. Idk. I'm just taking a wild guess. Good question. :)

Yick. I think it's more gross and confusing to use euphemisms and metaphors!

lol Jo G. i was thinking along the same lines. it reminds me of like Victorian times when they were SUPER uptight about mentioning anything to do with sex or bodies. ladies had "limbs", not arms or legs, and you still weren't even supposed to say that in mixed company. that kind of thing. very vague, imprecise, and not at all helpful, imo! :) wonder how many wedding night disasters there were back then!! lol!
