Teething?? - Riverton, UT

I just wanted to let you know that I have two children, 2 1/2 and 9 mos and neither of them had a fever or red, swollen gums while teething. They both had bouts of diarrhea and crankiness though.

Teething is different for every baby. My babies have never gotten fevers with teething. And it seems that some teeth give them more trouble than others for some reason. You need to give that baby some Tylenol or Motrin. Most effective is to alternate doses of Tylenol and Motrin.

He has all the signs and well, its one step @ a time. Honestly my son loved those chewing teething tablets, seemed to work

the only sign of teething my son had with his first two teeth were that he bit my finger and had teeth one day!! He didnt start really having any teething symptoms until his molars came in so it all depends on your child. Good Luck!!

"And this too will pass" I have 5 boys and they all teethed differently. My first was like yours where there was no fever, no swelling, no redness. He would get slightly warm the day his teeth broke through. I think it helped that I constantly was given him a frozen washcloth when he started teething. Son #4 would be quite fussy as my husband and I were getting ready to go to sleep and we would take turns, walking and rocking and soothing. My husband also was going to school and working full time. It's part of being a parent so for you to say that your husband can't offer much help, I feel is unfair to you. I know you understand how much your husband is doing but do not let your husband ever take you for granted. Make sure you both take time out for you two alone, if possible. Even if it's for a walk to go get an ice cream cone together. It truly does take a village to raise a child,

The crying throughout the night is supposed to be normal for teething. My daughter did it too. My daughter did not get her first tooth to pop through the skin till she was 6 months, but she had signs for a couple months before that. The white spots on gums, she had swelling, and she started drooling more, and shewing on everything. He is probably just getting ready to have his first tooth pop through... but it can take a while... it may be a month before it comes in. So... it is up to you, but you may not want him to sleep in your bed that long or it will be hard to get him to go back to sleeping in his crib. Just a thought... but you may not mind if he sleeps in your bed long term? It is so hard to know that they are hurting! I totally understand bringing him into your bed... unfortunately the first tooth can take a while. You can try Teething Tablets... my daughter loved them and they helped her to sleep better when she was teething and helped with the pain. They are all natural and you can get them at most stores in the baby aisle.... where the medicine is. They come in a blue package... I forget the brand name...they have a whole line of natural baby products including ear ache tablets, etc. It really helped!

I saw white pearly looking things in my sons mouth about the same age and the doctor said they were normal... pearl somethings... I thought it was thrush... but it wasn't. Teething can start now, but if he isn't fussy or anything, I would leave him be...

our 3.5 mo old started same thing 2 nights ago.
Teething tablets and teething gel right on the white spot. They don't need to be red. My son's gums are white way in the back also.

My son did not have fevers until he got his 2 year molars...

About your son's teething,my daughter was similar. at about 3 months we could see two white lines under her bottom gums. She was teething without a fever or red swollen gums. We kept thinking her bottom teeth would come through any day, but it took months. It didn't affect her sleep though. We could always see these little buds but they weren't coming through. Until one day (thanksgiving day in fact) they just got real swollen and popped up. she was 8 months old! She had a slight fever the first half of the day and they came through real fast and by afternoon she was fine. My suggestion is to give him Tylenol or ibprofin when he is fussy and keep consistent with his sleeping schedule. if he usually sleeps on his own in his crib, then keep doing it that way, even if he cries. the pain killers should help him sleep. if his sleeping routine gets messed up by bringing him in bed with you or sleeping together on the couch etc.. it will be harder for him to sleep. babies need consistency. I know it is frustrating to hear him cry so much but you and he both have to tough it out. I hope that I have been some help to you and good luck. Remember that it will eventually pass.

The product made by Hylands called Teething tablets have worked really well for my sisters daughter that is 7 months old you can buy them at "Wild Oats" or "Smith's Market Place" in their nutrition center I know this because I was the Nutrition Manager for 10 years before I adopted both of my daughters.

My sisters daughter did not break a fever or have swollen gums with her first 2 bottom teeth but, a month or so later her top 4 teeth came in and we rushed her to a doctor because she was so sick........I know 7 months and 6 teeth she's an over achiever I guess =)

My daughter's first teeth came without noticeably swollen gums or fever, just interrupted sleep and crankiness. Sounds to me like your darling's teething, and is normal.

My oldest had all the signs of teething, swollen gums, fever, fussiness, etc. My youngest showed absolutely no signs of teething except for the drooling. Shes 13 months old and has 6 teeth.

We use the hylands teething tablets. I love those. I have only been able to find those at health food stores lately. Walmart and Target, even the PX used to carry them but for some reason they are hard to find mainstream now. I dont let them dissolve under her tongue. I put them in her cheeks and hold them there until they start to dissolve and then rub them on her gums. It really helps alot.

Another thing we use are the Amber teething necklaces that you can find online. I made my own but if you dont have the time to do that, you can find them online. Just google Amber teething necklace and a bunch of different sites will pop up. Amber is supposed to have healing properties. Since its a resin and not a stone, when the heat from your skin heats up the amber, the oils from it rub off and become absorbed into your skin.

I dont know if the Amber trully helps or not but I can tell you that I havent had to give my youngest any other pain reliever than the teething tablets ever.

My oldest teethed so bad that I didnt get any sleep from the time she was 6 months old and started cutting teeth until she was 18 months old and finished cutting teeth. I wish I had known about teething necklaces then, I'm positive it would have helped.

I know every person is different but this is what helped us.

My baby started getting teeth at 4 months. He's 9 months now and has 8 teeth! It can happen at any time. Not all of the signs will be there either. He is definately teething, especially if you can see the whites ready to come through. Give him some Ibuprofen to get through the night. You will all be happier!

I didn't even notice until after my son cut his first two teeth. I believe it is remarkably normal.

My baby never had a fever while teething, sometimes her gums where swollen sometimes not. The things we noticed when she was teething-a little runny nose, more fussy/whiny, and poor sleeping. The things that worked best were a washcloth with one corner wet, frozen in the freezer and some herbal teething remedies.

it's completely possible that your son is teething. don't go by the text book with your kids, they are all different and grow differently. when my son was teething, he never had a fever. his gums turned black and blue, instead of swelling. and he was generally a calm laid back little boy, slept well, etc until he started teething. from what you said about your son chewing on whatever he can reach, i bet he is teething. and i'm right there with ya, as my little girl, also four months, is chewing, drooling, and very much teething as well. a little infants tylenol should help him with the pain. talk to your doctor about the correct dosing for his age and wieght. good luck.

When I read up on teething there were no clear answers b/c it's different for every baby. My 13 month old son got his first two teeth at 5 months, another 2 at 6 months, another 2 at 7 months, another 2 at 9 and just had two molars break through. For the first 8 he was really fussy for a few weeks before the teeth broke through. With his molars he wakes up in the middle of the night screaming and throwing his body around like crazy b/c of the pain. It's hard to even hold him. I've been giving him teething drops and some tylnol. I would recommend asking your doctor first before going that route (w/tylnol at least). It has helped my son but with all his teeth its a big long process. Your son may work on a tooth or pair of teeth before one of them even breaks through. It's definately really hard to tell with the first.

My little boy just broke two teeth at the same time, and I didn't even know it until they came through. He was fussy, especially at night, but I thought it was because he was getting over a rash he had. His gums had the white showing, but no red, no swelling. He had a fever, but that was attributed to a rash he had, some allergic reaction. Not all babies teethe the same way - it's just as normal for the teeth to just show up unannounced as it is for them to be preceded by all the classic signs. I would suggest giving him a little Tylenol (check with Dr. about dosage) to help with pain so he'll sleep, and put him back in his crib. That should help you both get more sleep. Good luck!

Sounds like teething to me. I have one word of advice...Tylenol!! After 6 months my advice would be Motrin. Everyone will feel a lot better and get some sleep.

My son never really broke out in a fever and never cared for chewing on teething toys. When we could tell he was teething we would try the cold rags to chew on or the carrots - but he didn't care for any of those tricks. All kids are a little different when it comes to teething. My son just became clingy for about 3 weeks before each tooth - after the tooth came out he would be fine unless another was coming. When his first tooth was coming in I had no idea what was going on until it finally broke through, then the 3 weeks of being clingy made sense. That is what he did for every tooth after that.

My suggestion is that if he is teething, just watch what he does and keep your eye out for those same clues the next time around. Some kids will break more than one tooth through at a time and it can be a little more painful for them. My son only did one tooth at a time so he didn't break out in a fever or too much pain, just wanted his mom. Good luck.

just thought i would respond to your question. i have a year old son who is just teething now. he doesnt get fevers and his gums dont swell up. however he does get fussing and he does cry and does chew on everything he can get his hands on. my husband got this really cool medicine for our son and it is the best!~ you can get it at walmart in the baby section or at walmart in the pharmacy section. it's called baby oregel. and it's made just for babies. works really great! i use it whenever my son gets fussy. you just put some on your finger and rub it on the gums. also baby tylenol works really good too. walmart seems to have it cheaper. so i would get it at walmart. also cold teething rings seem to help and cold wash cloths and ice cream seems to work with our son.
good luck! hope these ideas work out for you!, i wouldnt reccommend teething tablets cause if you child is like my son he wont chew on them. oregel you just simply rub the gel on the child gum and you can use it as often as you need.
i know it isnt fun. my son has four teeth coming in and they are not in all the way. they are just breaking in. and these ideas work for my son.....

It is a myth that children run fevers with teething. Neither one of mine ran a fever. Also, if read the label on baby orajel it says that if your child is running a fever it is not due to teething. It sure sounds like your child is teething to me. Try getting some ice teethers or they also sell teething tablets that seem to work very well. I recommended them to a friend recently and now her daughter is sleeping better through the night again. Good luck with the teething.

My little guy was 5 months old when he got his first tooth. He had no symptoms, except, he was just a little fussy the night before his first tooth came in. The very next week his other bottom tooth came in, and still, it didn't really seem to bother him. It really seemed to help my little one if I gave him some pain reliever before bed. My daughter did almost exactly the same thing. The dif was her teething pains only hit around 6-7 at night. She showed no other signs she was also a bit younger. She never drooled never really had a fever. 3 months she broke both bottom teeth. her pains though only seemed to happen at night. Try asking your Ped what a proper dose of Motrin or tylenol for your child would be and give him some just before you put him down or before he would normally have his screaming times. I recommend Motrin more then tylenol it seemed to last longer. Also we kept her on Heeltromil and Highlands teething tabs (both of those are homeopathic.) too when we couldn't use the motrin. Just my take on what happened with us and our monster girl.
Almost forgot.... we found these neat little mesh things at Walmart/target/babiesrus that you can take and put fruit in freeze it then the baby can gum it to death. it worked beautiful for ours and the baby sitter used it for all her other kids she loved it too. (can be messy with applesauce till it freezes.Lol)

Yes, all three of my boys had had some tooth or another that just appeared. I'd recomend Hyline teething tabs
(homiopathics) and baby ibruprofen for inflamation that we don't even have to see. I use advil any time I had dental issues or cleanings etc...I use this combo for the boys at night especially to help them sleep. It's calming and worth a try...

I agree too! My first son's teeth broke through right at 5 months old, with no redness or puffiness. Get ready to take photos! :)

My 14mo old daughter has seven teeth and hasn't exhibited any of the traditional teething signs so far. They just appear one day. I guess every child has their own way of doing things. As for the sleeping, my daughter used to love to be rocked and held until she fell asleep. That was until several months ago. She would drink her bottle, grab her blankie and then just thrash in my arms. After a few days of trying to figure out if she had physical issues causing her pain, I tried just putting her in her crib with her musical mobile on. She fell asleep almost immediately, and has done so almost every night since then. Of course I was crushed because I loved that bonding time with her as she fell asleep, but I guess she just got to a point where she wanted to put herself asleep in her own place. It's a blessing now, but I still miss that cuddle time with her. Good luck to you! I hope that you get everything worked out.

All babies are different so not all babies get a fever with teething. That's just something that possibly may happen when teething. Also, my pediatrician told me that babies can feel their teeth long before you'll see them. And they will come up in their gums and then go back down quite a few times before they will actually cut through their gums. My 8 month old has had the little white teeth looking things in her gums for a few months now and still hasn't cut any teeth. She goes through "teething" spurts where she doesn't sleep good and won't settle down to take naps and won't eat good, but nothing's happened yet and her dr. said that is completely normal. I would ask his dr. though just to make sure it's not something else. He could be sick...

It is perfectly normal for a baby to cut teeth and not be absolutely miserable. Our oldest daughter would get teeth and we wouldn't even know it...she would just smile and poof! there would be an extra tooth in her mouth! Our middle child would get a fever...nothing else....just a high fever for a couple nights and then she would get a tooth. Our youngest would just get a sore bottom and that was it. No horrible teething side effects! So....thank your lucky stars that you aren't one of those mothers that suffers relentlessly with a teething baby because I'm sure that there are some moms reading your question and giving you the evil eye!! ;) Smile!

my son did the same thing! he's 15 months now but at about five months he started not sleeping as much, and just acting slightly awnry. his gums hadn't been swollen and over all he was still just a peach! two days later BAM he had a tooth. a day after that Bam another tooth. he had just bitten down hard on a toy to bite the first one through the gums. he was happy as a clam and there was only a slightly red tongue from a tiny tiny bit of blood. so good luck! I'm sure he'll be fine.

Teething is such a tough process for everyone involved. Our little guy had teeth poke through and then rescind. Yikes. It seems like nights are the worst. I don't know if you've tried teething tablets (all-natural) but that might be a good start to soothing his gums. It's hard to know if teething is the deal but from the sounds of it, I'd guess teething is the case. Another suggestion is teething biscuits or just rubbing his gums may be soothing. We bought a dental kit for babies/toddlers and one of the tools was a gum soother that you can use for massage or if your little guy can hold it, he can bite on it himself. I hope things get better for you and your little one.

I was told about some awesome little tablets called Hyland's Teething Tablets...they melt under baby's tongue instantly and work like magic...ease the pain and help him sleep. Ask your pharmicist, cause they're hard to find. We still use them on our 3 year old for headaches and such. Oh, and they're all natural!

He is totally teething. I have 5 kids and all of them handle teething differently. But one thing is, it always disturbs their sleeping. My 6 month old was fussy and chewing a lot, but I didn't even know he was teething and then one day my sister-in-law said, Kyle has a tooth. I couldn't believe it. Neither of my kids had fevers or swollen gums. They would just drool a lot and chew on everything then all of a sudden there would be little teeth poking through. If he is having trouble sleeping you may want to put a bit of orajel on his gums just in case his teeth are coming in to ease any pain he may be feeling. He is at the age where teeth can start coming in at anytime.

Absolutely, it sounds like he is teething. My daughter started her bottom teeth around 4 months. It took a while for them to come through - often teeth will move very slowly, and will sometimes even stop for bit. It can be fast for some kids, and for others it can take a long time.

When my daughter is teething, she often cries at night. It's almost like she can deal with it during the day, but by night time, it's no longer bearable.

Here are a few things to try. First of all, giving your son things to chew on is a great idea. Cold, but not frozen, often helps really well. Chill a teething ring in the refrigerator, and let him chew on that. My little one wore bibs a LOT during this time - the drool was never-ending!

At night, to give your little guy some relief, try a topical medicine like Anbesol or Orajel. Anbesol worked better for my daughter - she liked the grape flavor better than the cherry Orajel. Anyway, this works for some kids, and others only find short term results. It's worth a try.

The other thing you can do is give your little one some Tylenol at bedtime. PLEASE CHECK WITH YOUR PEDIATRICIAN AS TO WHAT THE DOSAGE FOR YOUR SON WOULD BE! I can't remember what it is for 5 months/weight of your son. This often gave my daughter the relief she needed to sleep during the night. On bad nights, we even gave her a second dose (4-6 hours after the first one).

As far as running a fever - my daughter rarely (maybe once) got a fever while teething. She would sometimes, not always, get a little diaper rash. Sometimes little ones who are teething can also have some runny diapers. If you have questions about your son's symptoms, ask your pediatrician.

I just wanted to let you know that I have two little ones and during each of their teething times, (one is still going through hers) I didn't even know that my little boy had teeth coming in. I mean, I would always look, and it seemed like something was trying to come through, but he had no other symptoms. I consider myself lucky, because you know how everyone has their story, I heard a lot of bad teething stories!
Good Luck and if he does start getting more fussy, just remember to hold him a little tighter and to love him that much more!

My oldest didn't show any signs of teething and I found the first tooth when she bit me while nursing!!OW!!!She was 8 mo, a little later than most. However, she did generally get an ear infection with every tooth she cut. She would often get one in each ear if she was teething on both sides. Ear infections are particularly painful when you are trying to lay down and sleep. Is this a possibility?

I have three children and I never knew when any of them were getting teeth until the teeth arrived. None of them ever got red swollen gums or ran a fever. The oldest two didn't get any teeth until close to a year old, but by youngest got his first four teeth at four months. It sounds to me like your son is getting some teeth.

I definitely think your baby is teething. My son had quite a few teeth that came in the same way. Try Hyland's homeopathic teething tablets. They are all natural and work wonderfully! It's very possible. My son only had one sleepless night, no fever, and the next morning there were two little pearly whites on the bottom. Fevers shouldn't actually be associated with teething. A fever can occur at the same time as teething, but the two aren't related. So I would just keep watching, give him some tylenol at night if he's having a hard time, and see if some teeth pop thru in the next few days.

It sounds like he is getting teeth. Every baby is so different they don't all get the same symptoms. I didn't know my first baby was teething until he bit me and i could feel that a tooth popped through. He had been chewing a lot, but no swollen gums and no fever. My second baby had the swollen gums and cried and his sleeping pattern changed, but he didn't really get a fever either. Just crying and runny noses. Hopefully your little boy's teeth break through soon.

Amber - my son was close to the same age as yours when he popped his first teeth. I didn't even know he was teething: people had been telling me he was for a couple months because he drooled and chewed on things. I brushed it off because, gee, he's a baby! They do that! Anyway, his first tooth caught me totally off guard because he didn't have the fever or anything just like your little guy it sounds. For me, the nighttime wakings have been a big sign for teething. Try giving him a dose of infant Tylenol before bed and see if that helps him; I have also heard teething tablets are great. I haven't tried them yet myself, but I have friends who swear by them. One other side note: if the tylenol doesn't help or he is still waking up fussy after the teeth pop through, you may want to have your ped. check for reflux. My little guy has been on Zantac for about a year for that now, and he's only 15 mos! The medication has made a huge difference for him though. Just a thought.

With my son, I couldn't tell whether or not he was getting a tooth until I felt the sharp little edge, broken through. Fevers and red swelling usually mean there is a bit of an infection, but little white lines are definitely teeth coming up. I think it hurts them more when it cuts the skin, so use some baby orajel. My son didn't ever cry, but wouldn't sleep until we rubbed some on.
