Thinking of Going Back to Work

This is my first request, so here goes!
I have been a SAHM now since before my son Benjamin was born in June 05'. I was very ill before having him from complications which made me unable to work, even though I was planning on being a SAHM. Recently, I've been seriously thinking about going back to work for financial and personal reasons. I feel kind of lost right now and am not sure if working would give me a sense of being a real person again. Even though everyone says that I'm doing a great job as a mother, I don't feel complete like I thought I would. Not sure if anyone else has gone through this but any advice/experience would be great!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I found a part time job a month ago, about 25-30 hours and week and love it! I'm so glad that I found something that I like and am with adults, definitely is saving me mentally. So far so good! Thanks to everyone for their advice and support, I really appreciate it!

I dont really have any advice but I am going through the same thing at the moment.
WOW I cant believe there are others out there.
I also stay at home and have since 6/05. My son was born 8/05.
I have been toying with the idea of going back to work P/T but am unable to find a job which fits our schedule. My husband is a firefighter with odd hours. I get really excited about finding a job and getting out there with adults then I get nervous about leaving my son with someone I dont know.
I think when the time is right to start a new job everything will work out and fall into place.

Hi C.,
Start off taking a night class at a local community center on something you are interested in, see if that helps. Or a college class or two, just to get you mingling with adults and talking in complete sentences again, lol... When my second daughter was a few months old, I started selling Tupperware a few nights a week, by then I had been home for 19 months and needed a little adult interaction. There are also volunteer opportunities you can get involved in. If these don't help, start out part time somewhere with flexible hours. These years go fast, so enjoy them, but don't feel bad if you need to take some time to reconnect with who you are (other than your mom role!). A lot of it is just the monotony of being home most of the time, with not much adult contact. So find a few things that get you involved without jumping right into full time work.... Take your time, and you will find what works for you, and your family! God bless....

C., That is a big decision. It is just as hard to stay home but I am glad that I did. My kids are growing up so fast. I work at home promoting a wellness company and I would love to share with you what I do. You can have the best of both worlds. You can work and have connection with the outside world. Yet you can stay home with your child. This is not a get rich quick but if you are patient and like working with people (mostly moms) you can establish a nice income. This company has given much more then money. I feel good about what I do and it has made me a better person and mom. Check out my website.

I feel the exact same way you do!!!!! I feel guilty about feeling it because I am so sure that working moms wish they could spend all day with their children. However, there is a sense of loss, connection to the outside world, and a little feeling of lack of contributation to the family--even though we contribute so much through being and interacting with our children and keeping the house in tact. I just posted a request about anyone knowing of job openings and childcare--and have no advice for you, however, it is good to know someone else feels maybe a little like I do. Let me know if you get any good advice!! Good Luck!!!!!!!!

C.,
I also felt the way you describe. I love my children more than anything, but I felt like I needed an "adult identity" also. I have gone back to work on a part-time basis. I don't know if this is an option for you, but I think it's the best thing I ever did. I feel like I am a better mom because of it. I have seen myself be more patient and I miss my kiddos like crazy by the time I get home. I only work 10 hours a week and the change was still drastic. I still have time to take them to Gymnastics, and playgroup, and toddler time at the library, but I also get 3 nights a week to come home and have them bombard me shouting "MAMA!" as I walk through the door. I wouldn't change it for the world. Good luck with whatever you decide.
