It needs to be really flat. My daughter made hers by sewing 3 layers of quilted fabric together. Then she made a special pillowcase or two and she loves it.
Hello Moms!! My son turned 2 in March and we are looking to put him in a toddler bed. I am thinking about getting him a pillow because he loves sleeping on them. My question is are there any special toddler pillows that are safe? I'm terrified to let him sleep with one because I'm afraid he will suffocate on the pillow. Any adivce will be great!
Thank you!!!
Thanks everyone for all of your advice!! It has really put my mind at ease about giving him a pillow!! You all are wonderful!!!
It needs to be really flat. My daughter made hers by sewing 3 layers of quilted fabric together. Then she made a special pillowcase or two and she loves it.
I went to walmart's craft section and bought one of the little pillows that is for a throw pillow. It was just the right size for my daughter.
That was about the same age that we gave our son a pillow and converted his crib to a toddler bed. I grabbed one of my husband's flat pillows off of our bed and put a Tigger pillow case on it and our son has done just fine. Hubby, on the other hand, is having a hard time replacing his favorite pillow!
I used these little square (12 x 12 inch) pillow from IKea. 2 or 3 bucks. I used them the toddler bed and for nap time as preschool. They are washable and a perfect size. I made a pillow case from one of husbands tee shirts, stitched up 3 sides and used velcro on the side with an opening. I was afraid of it comeing off and covering my sons face. It's a strong velcro that little hands can't easily pull apart. However, I don't think my son ever tried to. It was really for my piece of mind. Good luck.
I have two children, current ages are 6yrs and 4yrs. They both got a regular pillow at 2yrs old when they moved into the toddler bed and have been just fine. If you are uncomfortable with the regular pillow, you could try one of those log shape pillows that feel like a bean bag.
My daughter started sleeping with a regular pillow at one and she is fine.. I think that you would be perfectly fine with a regular pillow, I don't think he will suffocate himself.
Good luck!
My daughter's first pillow was a travel pillow - same shape as a bed pillow, but smaller. It was completely machine washable too.
To ease your mind, buy a flatter pillow. My daughter was 18 mos old when she was given her first pillow, and she has been fine ever since.
Hey -
My daughter turned 2 in December and she sleeps with a "throw pillow". I sewed a cover for it that is softer than the throw pillow material. This is a "firm" pillow and so I don't worry about her getting her caught in it and being unable to breathe. Plus, she uses it more as a body pillow. She plops her whole upper body on the pillow.
Good luck!

He'll be fine with a pillow.
I got them at One Step Ahead and they are small and came with pillow cases.
I actually just listed a Thomas the train toddler bed on Craigslist 2 days, it is very cute. If you are interested send me your email and I will send you pictures.
Well my daughter is 17 months and I let her sleep with just a regular pillow and she has been sleeping with one since she was 9 months and I haven't had any problems... I hope this helps
I made my son a nap mat for preschool and bought a travel pillow in the fabric section at Walmart for $5. It is the perfect size for their heads if you are that worried. I put a regular pillow(kind of flattened out) in my 18 month olds crib and placed it under the sheet so she could not get underneath it. That way it is in there just not accessible. That made me feel better about her wanting it. Just a thought!
He'll be fine with a pillow, if you'd rather do a small one you might be better off searching by travel pillow or boudoir pillow instead of toddler pillow. They're the same size (I used to work for a pillow & comforter manufacturer). I do know Company Kids, Pottery Barn Kids and One Step Ahead all carry them and I think all three carry pillow cases to fit them.
I don't think a two year old is likely to suffocate with a regular pillow, but if you would rather use something else, then try a travel pillow.
I couldn't find a smaller pillow for my son. He went into a regular bed right around the same age. I ended up with a down alternative type pillow that is pretty firm so it wouldn't fluff around his face and it compresses a little flatter than a foam pillow. He has been totally fine with it. But if you have an Ikea near you, I have heard they have smaller toddler pillows there.
The only toddler pillow I could find was one a Babies-R-US. However, my son (2 at the time) really liked one of my pillows. It was older and flattened a good bit so I gave that one to him and returned the toddler pillow. He has done just fine with it.
My 2 yr old will not sleep without a pillow. I would just not get a really fluffy one. Some are so think it is almost like sitting up.
Cuddles From Home sells really cute pillows for toddlers. All of my kiddos have them and they love them.
I haven't read all your answers yet but I thought I'd share, unless your 2yo has some issuse with his breathing there is not reason to believe he will suffocate from a pillow he is old enough for his bodies natural instincts to take over. that being said
target has a great travel pillow that is about $5. and you can use a regular pillow case folded over or cut in half if you can sew, or have it sewn in half.
