My toddler put some bird poop in her mouth this morning! She then spit it out and we washed her mouth, but my husband and I are kind of freaked out. Has anyone had this happen before? What did your doctor say? I am not sure what symptoms to be on the lookout for.....(diarrhea?etc.)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone who responded to my request! Your information and experience helped me to know some warning signs to look for, and put my mind at ease. I am happy to report that my daughter is fine! Isn't it amazing what kids can do and still come out okay? Anyways, I am thankful for your help.
A.

A wild bird or your bird? Even if it's wild, I don't think you guys have to worry. I'm currently hand-raising a bird, and it's so cute and it thinks I'm its mom so I get a little overly physical with it. We kiss and I put its head in my mouth and weird things like that.

I'm still alive.

Well at least you know her taste buds are working well since she spat it out! If that's the worst thing she puts in her mouth youre doing good. Kids ingest a ton of germs during toddler-hood, their little immune systems are amazing. I'm 99.9% sure that you wont see any results from it. But if she does have a little diahrea you'll know why.

Bird poop is a main sorce of salmonella. If your daughter gets diarrhea, it could be a sign of it. Most cases of it are better to be kept untreated and let to just run its coarse. Most importantly is good hand washing after she uses the toilet to protect your baby from getting it too.
Good luck.

Your question made me chuckle! Little stinkers are always putting stuff in their mouth that don't belong there: I started to think Poison Control would come find me when my son was that age. I don't think you have much to worry about with your daughter. You're keeping an eye on her health anyway as far as diarrhea and whatnot.... You can call the pediatrician's office to ask your question, but my guess is she'll be just fine and her stomach acid will take care of any danger! Best to you!

Dear A.,
Welcome to the joys of things kids will try to taste.
It's not funny, at least not right this minute, but you will most likely laugh about it one day.
I guess it might make a difference if it's pet bird poop or wild bird poop. But either way, since she spit it out and you rinsed her mouth, I'm sure she will be just fine.
If she actually ate and swallowed a big handfull of it, it might be different.

My friend's kid ate and actually ingested a quantity of bunny poop. She was home with him alone at the time and completely freaked, rushing him to the ER, the whole bit. He was fine. He didn't choke and it didn't make him throw up or sick at all. They told her just to give him plenty of water and it would all "come out in the end". She was scared of of her wits, but we actually had a good laugh about the whole thing when it was obvious there would be no ill effects. Then, there was the neighbor kid who had a thing for snails.

If it was wild bird poop, you might just want to call your pediatrician, but it doesn't sound like she got enough of anything to harm her.
Hopefully you and dad having a panic attack will be enough to prevent her from trying to put weird things in her mouth again.

Best wishes!

My daughter has done this as well and she has never had any adverse reactions.

Yummy!

Birds do carry a few nasty bacteria that can infect humans, but the chances are next to none that your little love will come to any harm.

Do talk to your doc about it, and watch for the usual symptoms of fever, diarherra, etc.

Unfortunately, that is what our little ones do at times to check out their world. I have personally called the poison control hotline several times and usually the child needs to have actually ingested a fairly decent amount of a foriegn or poisonous substance to have a reaction of any kind. Watch for diarrhea, vomiting or any other unusual symptoms, but your little one will probably be just fine.

My son once ate half of an earthworm when he was two, my other son ate some powdered fertilizer or insecticide (cannot remember which, now) and my daughter tasted and immediately spit out a poisonous berry from a weed growing by the sidewalk in our yard. All three had no symptoms and no sickness from these events. :0)

HI. I would just keep a eye on her and if she become unwell then get her seen but i am sure she will be ok.

My son has eaten half a beetle and I took out a well chewed worm out of his mouth and he was caught drinking the water out of the bird bath a few times. He is now five and still loves the out doors and is always covered in mud.

Try not to worry to much. J.
