Toddler Seeing Things?

I know this is going to sound a little crazy but has anyone else's toddler told them they saw things that weren't really there? My 19 mo son started doing it this week. Earlier this week he said there was a purple helicopter in my hair. Then the next day he "saw" Thomas the Train on the ceiling of his bedroom. Yesterday, we were walking back to our minivan after swimming and he insisted that our cat was in the driver's seat. This morning at breakfast, he was looking out our kitchen window and I asked him what he saw and he said he was watching the cow and the horse. When I went to pick him up out of his crib after his nap this afternoon, he said there were spiders in his bed. My husband thinks this is a riot and that our son is just very intelligent and/or creative for his age. I want to be that laid back about it but honestly I'm a little freaked out. Has anyone else's son or daughter done this and if so, did they end up being ok?

What can I do next?

My cousins son used to talk about the beautiful lady with the big white dress that was in the corner of the ceiling of his room. She had wings too. He said she was really nice.

Yeah, that's normal. They are just playing pretend, all kids do it. My daughter tells us we have umizoomis in our mouth (team umizoomi characters). She tells me about the dinosaur in the bed. Don't worry about it at all. Honestly you should be worried if you have a child that doesn't do this at that age. Kids are way more creative than adults :)

I just ask my daughter what color the dinosaur is... or if she is insisting umizoomis are in my mouth I say oh okay well hold on, and I walk to the bathroom, I come back and say okay I brushed my teeth and now they're gone. lol.

BOTH my kids do that too, from when they could speak.

No worries.

Kids are not "literal" at this age, or ever. LOL

They have imaginations.
And it is their way of making 'jokes' too.

Your son, is making jokes.
Yes, at this young age of his.
Good for him.

He may just be playing. Being only 19 months old, he might not know what some things are, so he says words and things that he does know. If that makes sense. I have also heard that kids are susceptible to "seeing" things. I guess it really depends on your belief if there is anything for him to see or not. My son has/had an imaginary friend for a long time. It did not worry me at all. I also ask him to see my aura almost everyday, since I am horrible at it and have a tough time. So sure, maybe he is...

My youngest has always had quite the imagination. When we are in the car we see blue dragons, pink elephants, purple tigers, etc one time he was looking out the window with his aunt and cousins and his aunt asked the boys if they thought the tree looked like a bear her 2 looked at her like she was nuts my son chimed "yeah with purple eyes and green teeth"

My daughter does stuff like that sort of. Frankly if he's talking that much at 19 months, then just be thankful!!! ;) I think he's just being silly/creative and I wouldn't worry. My daughter is 3 and she still says things like that or will insist that I saw something or whatever. She knows she's being silly and your son probably can't verbalize or express that yet, but it seems pretty normal!

Oh, yeah, and it freaked me out too, but she was just imagining things. Kids this age still blend reality and pretend, and they don't realize that no one else sees what they're pretending (the ability to put yourself in someone else's shoes generally develops around 6 or 7). So just enjoy it. You'll hear about the real things soon enough.

very normal for toddlers/kids. They have hilarious imaginations and are very excited to use all the words they know, even when they don't correctly describe the "reality". Your son just sounds like he has a very vivid imagination and a great sense of humor :)

Their imaginations are very active at this age! Lasts into their preschool years. You'll start thinking you have a liar for a child, but it's very normal that it takes time for them to understand reality like we do:-)

I do think it is his imagination and his attempts at making conversation. Have you responded by making a silly story about what he said and then gagued his response? Does he laugh and get excited, or does he get concerned and try to correct you?

I think my son started to do the same around his age. I see more of it now at 25 mos. He talks about seeing muskrats now, it is kind of funny.
