Toilet Mat for Kids Bathroom

My 4 year old son is terrible at "aiming" in the toilet. Although most of the urine does end up in the toilet, I find myself having to wipe/scrub the bathroom floors at least daily which is taking a toll on me and the bathroom tile floors. Is there a toilet mat out there that is waterproof, and easy to clean?

Super simple on this one - have him SIT down to pee. :) I have 3 boys and this was the easiest thing that worked well. This way there are no extra messes that we have to clean up, they don't feel bad for making the mess. Now that my youngest is 11 he has decided that he wants to stand - if/when he makes a mess HE cleans it up - NOT me!

Hope this helps!

One of my teachers recomended putting cherrieo's in the toilet for targets, this helps the child have fun getting it all in the toilet and dramatically reduces misses.
I know thats not what you were asking for but its a fun way to solve the problem!

good luck!

Heres what you do. Flush the toilet.... Get a Permanent BLACK Sharpie Pen and mark an X inside the toilet bowl. (It will stay there for quite some time... a month or so at least.)

Tell your child to "aim" there each time he goes potty. Works like a charm! Good Luck!

You could keep a canister of disinfectant wipes handy in the bathroom for quick clean-ups, and maybe you should have your son help clean it up!

I Don't know of a toilet mat that would be helpful but I have heard from a friend who had 2 boys... try putting some cherrios in the toilet and have your son aim at the cherrios the other option is to have him sit at home and stand elsewhere.

I have the same problem w/my 7.5 yo & my hubby at times, too. Our 3 yo still sits to pee but will be standing soon once he's tall enough. I,too, got VERY sick of that awful smell of the mat around the toilet so I just got rid of it. No more mat around the toilet for a very long time in my house! Yep, the porcelein tiles are pretty cold during those middle-of-the-night potty runs but I find this a much better alternative to smelly mats. If my big boy misses, then he eihter wipes it up himself or tells me.

Maybe you could teach him to pee sitting down until he gets more control.

I have gotten rid of the mats in my bathroom as well. I buy these wipes by Method called "tub & tile". They are flushable and biodegradable. I go in to the bathroom in the morning and evening and wipe around the toilet and the base and they have a eucalyptus mint smell that is not too strong but it kills the strong "pee" odor. I also use Renuzit Pearl Scents air fresheners. They helps a lot. I have a 4year old an 11year old and my hubby-and they ALL share the same bathroom! I have my own! By doing these things I do my Friday deep cleaning and it stays pretty odor free in their bathroom. Someone else had the idea of the "X" mark in the toilet-that is genius! Good Luck!

We have a similar issue with our 4 yr old. We had improved aim by throwing some cereal in the toilet and having him try to sink it. I still have to scrub the bathroom often, but at least not every day anymore. I found his aim is worse when he really has to go, it is like he can't control the pressure, but it is improving. If you get any good responses I would be interested in what other moms have tried. I just use 409 on the floor around the toilet, and usually include the side of the cabinet since he has hit that before too. I do it about every 3 days now and it seems to be keeping any odor in check. I keep asking my husband when the aim will get better, but he doesn't ever remember having a problem with aim. I know a lot of people have had success with those little urinal things, but we just don't have room in our tiny bathroom for one of those.

Welcome to a household of boys! I dont ever seeing this "issue" going away. When they were young, my boys would play "sword" - and always had "over spray". I did teach all of them on how to wipe all around the toilet after they do their business and also taught them to put the toilet seat down. I don't know how many times my girls when they were little fell into the toilet during the night, so this was an ongoing training issue until the boys figured it out that I wasn't going to let up. This was not an option in my household. With your Son 4 years old, it maybe a good time to begin teaching him to clean up after himself. By the time your daughter reaches age to be independent in the bathroom, your son will be well taught that this is all part of the process of doing their business in the bathroom and your daughter won't fall into the toilet.

With all my sons being adults, when they come to visit, I cannot tell when I walk in the bathroom that a male was in the house. As for my husband, he has been "trained" for many years. lol

I think of it this way, why do the public bathrooms have urinals for men? Because it is obvious that males need assistance so there is no overspray.

I have 2 boys and have had 2 husbands. You will clean pee the rest of your life for the most part.
You may want to mix some water and bleach in a mister bottle and just mist the area for a day or two until you are ready to mop or wipe it down. Teaching your son to wipe the rim of the toilet is always a "good manners" thing in case he does it at someone else's house. As far as the overspray that tends to go to random areas, well, it just never seems to go away. Having them sit doesnt work either.... just gives them a different angle to spray from and they usually get a lot of pee on their hand. Just make your son aware of his aim, over and over again, and have him watch you wipe it down (maybe get some of the little premoistened lysol cloths and keep them handy). If he has to wipe down his mess, maybe he'll be more careful. Sorry, this is all I can do. It's "man" thing.

In our case, it was my husband that said the boys need to sit to pee until they are old enough to clean it up. Once they were 4, then cleaning the bathroom toilet area became their job (I have 3 boys & the youngest always has the toilet job as they are the ones likely to miss most often). It is a daily chore. I have them wear disposable gloves & wipe the areas clean with a clorox wipe. I showed them all the places that need to be wiped down, and supervised them doing it the first few times. Yes, I do the weekly deep cleaning myself just to make sure all is completely sanitary. It was amazing how quickly the boys learned to aim well once they were in charge of cleaning the mess (not one of them was thrilled with touching the pee). My response was "neither am I, and I know for certain that I was not the one who missed."

You are going to laugh, but why not teach him to SIT? I have never understood the "need" for men to stand while they urinate. In our home they sit, in public they stand (a major plus, I wish I could!). There is no fuss over toilet seats left up or splatter on the floor, toilet or walls, much less smell.
I told my son a long time ago, you want to stand? Be prepared to be the one to clean the toilet....he learned to sit fast! =)

Hi A.,
You could have him throw a square of toilet paper in to aim at since it isn't always handy to have some cheerios in the bathroom. I also agree with some others that you can have him wipe it up with a disinfecting wipe if there is a still a mess. While it might be easier for you to clean it yourself, I think the responsibility (it's not a punishment) of him cleaning his own mess is extra incentive to work on his aim. It'll probably be easier to have no mat until there is no pee on the floor in that area.
Good luck whatever you decide to do,
C.

This is an on going battle at my house too! I actually woke up thinking I need to disinfect the bathroom again ALREADY! I want to thank everyone for the advice too!

I did clean with Vinegar and water last week and it seemed to minimize the smell for a few extra days.
