Traveling with Homemade Baby Food

Hey Mamas,

We are going to visit family in a few weeks for a holiday. My younger son will be 8 months old when we go. I make all of his baby food at home using the ice cube tray method so I have ziplock bags full of frozen baby food ice cubes in my freezer. We are staying at my grandpa's home when we go, but because of the craziness of the holiday I know my grandma will be frantically cooking constantly so I really don't want to make baby food when I get there (that's what I did when we travled with my older son when he was an infant but it was just to my dad's house and it was low key so I just asked him to buy a few things ahead and I made it when I got there).

so I'm looking for any experience/tips from anyone who has traveled with baby food. We are going from Wed thru Sun so I'm not sure if that's too long to just let it all defrost and keep it in the fridge once we get there.

I am aware that I could buy jars just for this trip and of course I will if I have to, but I'd prefer him to continue having only the "real thing" that I make at home if possible. I figured some moms must have done this and might have something to suggest that I'm not thinking of.

Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

I am not in your situation with traveling with an infant...but if flying, personally, I would hit Target when I get there and get a $25 smoothie machine (thats what I use for my home daycare babies...I make homemade food for infants in my care) and make fresh as you go along.

I never do anything fancy..usually Fridays are what I call "Must go's Fridays" for fruit and I clean out the fruit bowl/refrig fruits that are left from the week with kids (tomorrow I likely will have strawberries, blueberries and pineapple and almost always have bananas to mix these with).

Alot of veggies I just do in small batches...pop some sweet potatoes in the oven...steam some carrots or green beans..then pureee them up.

I imagine travel restrictions and thawing problems would just be MORE of a PITA than making some as you go along for a week of visiting time?

Good luck and have a great trip!!

You'll be able to travel with some of the baby food, but TSA will pitch a fit if you try to bring enough frozen food (and ice packs) for the whole trip. I'd take as much as you need for the day and either buy or make the rest of the food when you get there.

I did the same thing....and method. Make sure the food is really frozen and store it in a freezer pack with lots of frozen blocks. When you get there, put it straight into the freezer.

If it does thaw on the way, it will be good for the time you are there as long as you keep it in the fridge.

Have you introduced avacado or banana yet? Maybe keep some of those items for the last day so you don't need the frozen foods?

Do you have a magic bullet type contraption? Can you take that with you and puree some of the foods you've already introduced and are already eating?

Good luck!

When we flew from TX to MT when my twins were that age also we also did a lot of "instant" homemade baby foods while we were there: bananas, avocado, tofu, yogurt... Things that you only had to cut and mash.

You didn't say how long your trip is, so that would effect how I would handle it. With my son for shorter distances i would just take frozen cubes, put them in a bag with ice packs and stick them back in the freezer when we get there (I could do this for a 6-ish hour car ride without a problem). The other route I could see going is to make a few batches of food at your house the day or two before, put them into trays to be frozen (my trays have lids), but stick them in the fridge and then pop them into the freezer when you get where you're going. From Wed to Sun is a bit long to have them defrosted in the fridge, in my opinion. I also traveled with things like natural apple sauce so that I had that in a pinch. It's not homemade, but it felt better to me than store bought baby food for some reason. At 8 months my son also loved his fresh food feeder (the little mesh bag that you put a chunk of food into) and he would eat raw pear, banana, peaches, etc in there. If you can go that route then you don't have to cook any fruit, you can just worry about his veggies, grains and protein. And we had already started finger foods by then, so defrosting some frozen peas in the microwave or cooking up a little pasta for the week would be pretty easy and I doubt it would get in the way in the kitchen too much. I'm not sure how your grandmother is in the kitchen, but my mom was always happy to take some veggies or pasta or rice out of the pot before she seasoned it for me to feed to our son.

Have fun on your trip!
