Twin ____@____.com, One Baby with No Heartbeat

Hello moms,

I am posting this question for a very close friend of mine. She is been trying to conceive for years now and just found out that she is pregnant. But the doctor checked her today and said only one of the twins is having heartbeat, so there is a chance that the body could reject both or absorb one of them and let the health pregnancy continue..

Anyone has similar experience, please share.

Appreciate your feedback!

I've heard stories about baby's heartbeats being in unison? Maybe a long shot, but a second opinion? Or trying to do something to shake up the heartbeats?

Unfortunately, a twin loss is way more common than once thought. A lot of (healthy) pregnancies begin as twins but the mother never knows. It is very sad, but pretty common. I'm sure that the healthy baby will be fine.

A good friend of mine is the surviving twin of an early pregnancy miscarriage. He's in his 30s now. It is possible for a healthy outcome for the one twin. His mom always felt the loss of the other child. Best of luck to your friend.

This happened to me with my 6th pregnancy. It was so hard having the conflict of life and death within my body at the same time. I grieved for my lost baby. I bled a bit, but also absorbed a lot of the baby, etc. I was so sick during that pregnancy. My midwives said it was the extra hormones and my body absorbing so much. Please grieve with her, tell her how sorry you are for her loss. Don't minimize it because at least one of them is living. I'm not saying you would do this, but some people think it is comforting to say (or rather, they don't know quite what to say and this just comes out). It's so hard to know what to say when people have any type of loss, isn't it? I was so cheered and comforted by the friends who truly felt sorry and sad for our loss. I'm sure having the living baby still growing and thriving helped me in my loss, but it was still hard. My sweet baby who survived is now 4. We named her Faith because we had our faith tried so much in many ways during my pregnancy with her. This was just one of the ways. You are so sweet to ask on behalf of your friend.

When I was pregnant with my son, I bled heavily and had to go to the ER. They couldn't find a heartbeat and told me that my pregnancy wasn't viable. I was devastated. They did bloodwork and had me come back in in a few days to compare the pregnancy hormone levels to confirm before proceeding with a procedure.
Imagine my surprise when a week later, my levels had more than tripled and they called me in to the office. Sure enough, there was his little heartbeat. He's 15 now and perfectly healthy.
I'm praying for this type of miracle for you as well. It can happen!
Please be sure to let us know what happens. My thoughts will really be with you.

I had the "Vanishing Twin Syndrome" where at around 6 weeks it will show both the heartbeats and around 8 weeks the one will just stop developing. I had my sono done at 8 weeks and never even knew I was pregnant with twins. I had a very high risk pregnancy because I had too much amniotic fluid and they didn't know why. It wasn't until I delivered my daughter they found the second water sack. I feel for your friend, I didn't know till the end that I was supposed to have twins and it really bothered me and it still does. I wish the best of luck to her and her unborn babies!

This happened to me too with my 2 year old. I had an ultrasound at around 9 weeks and the doctor said there were two sacs but one passed around 6 weeks. She told me it would most likely absorb and that I might have some brownish blood, which I did maybe a week later.

My sister had this happen. Her twins were ferternal (sp?). She went on to have a perfectly healthy daughter. If they are identical, then they share a placenta I think. ???? Then, I believe the risk of losing the other one is higher.

I am 36 weeks prego and had the exact same experience. At my very first appointment, my doctor found two sacs but only one heartbeat. He checked again a month later and still no heartbeat. He said its v ery common. The baby with no heartbeat will be absorbed into your body.
Hope this helps a bit

This happened twice to a good friend of mine. Both her 3rd and 4th pregnancies started as twins. In each case, she had some bleeding and went to the doc thinking she might be miscarrying. Both times, the tests showed that she did miscarry one, but kept the second. Both pregnancies were 100% normal after that and made it to term, resulting in perfectly healthy, happy kids.

My sister-in-law experienced bleeding & was told she was having a miscarriage. We all grieved, then when she went in to have her HCG level checked the following week, and her numbers were still increasing. That's when we found out that she had been pregnant with twins, and only one was lost. The surviving twin was on the small side for the first few years of his life, but is now a normal, healthy, happy adult.

I acutally got pregnant with twins, twice. One right after the other... man, I should have bought a lottery ticket. :) Any way, I had both happen. With my first pregnancy, my body absorbed the second baby and I had a 9 lb 5 oz moose that is total healthy and happy. My second pregnancy was identical twins. I lost one heart beat at 10 weeks and the other baby's heart beat 2 weeks later. They said miscarriages are 50% higher in women with identical twins because the egg splits so late after fertilization and doesn't always split evenly, thus causing some severe birth defects if brought to term.

Luckily it doesn't sound like she is having identical twins so I pray that all goes well with the surviving twin. Good luck!

Jen

I have heard of it all. I have heard of one miscarriage and one healthy pregnancy and recently, a co workers wife had twins and the one twin threw her into labor and the healthy twin ended up being born extremely early. Although he has been through some challenges, he is further on his way to good health and an excellent future. At 3 months he is now my daughters birth weight. 8 lb 4 oz

I have a close friend who just had this happen. One of the twins was lost very early on in the pregnancy, but there were no other complications and the other twin is now about 6 months old and doing great.
