Don't give tylenol. Use Advil for inflammation and fever, but that seems like overkill for a rash. The otc cortisone cream should do the trick.
(If you're wondering about my warning about tylenol, you can message me and I'll tell you why. )
Ds2 6 months old had what looked like hives or a slew of bites on his arms and legs. We had his 6 month well visit and innoculations yesterday. Fearing an adverse reaction, I took him to the ped who gave a diagnosis of a viral infection presenting as a rash. I've never seen this before. She suggested cortisone cream and Tylenol, and to keep an eye on it.
He doesn't seem too bothered, but it looks awful.
Any thoughts or suggestions? Any ideas on how to bring down the welts?
He isn't otherwise sick.
Regards

Hmmm....If i didn't know better I'd swear you were seeing my son's old pedi.....
He mysteriously started breaking out in hives when he was about 2 and pedi told me it was viral....After, upon my insistance, visitting a pediatric allergist who said viral hives were basically a crock, we discovered an assortment of food and enviromental allegies....
And right around the same time, munchkin had his first flu shot and then came down oculorespiratory syndrome -- blick!
In either case, Benadryl was involved and it helped....but I'm not sure if you can give a 6 month old some benadryl
But anyways, that's our experience...cortisone might help.
i hope he feels better soon!!!
I don't think I'm familiar with viral rashes. We've had many rashes - but not that kind. Sorry he's got this.
My son finds that cold compresses - we just use cotton balls or soft cold face clothes, or even tissue, soaked in cold water - help make my son's skin feel better. He gets rashes and hives and contact dermatitis from time to time, and he even finds it makes his eczema feel better. I think (?) a doctor at one time or another told us this and we've just done it ever since.
I agree that I'd probably do ibuprofen over Tylenol (for inflammation) but not sure it's inflamed.
I have had a rash caused by a virus. I no longer remember the details. I just know it happens.
If he's not bothered by it, no need for any other treatment. No need for a pain relief. I suggest Tylenol does not reduce inflamatiion. The cortisone ointment will get rid if the welts.
A viral rash is what you get from a virus, like chicken pox, measles, etc.. It could be a reaction to the vaccine.
IMO, I would not use Tylenol or anything like that after a vaccine or with a virus. I have read about adverse effects when they are given (including antibiotics) after a vaccine. I would just keep in contact with your ped and keep your child comfortable with cortisone cream or an oatmeal bath to reduce itching.
I don't have any advice but I hope he's okay soon. It's hard to have one that's doing something like this.
Mmm...what a coincidence that he was vacinated then got a rash but we are suppose to believe it is viral. SMH. I hope he recovers quickly.
My daughter used to get a case of all over hives (not itchy or anything bothersome, just small and everywhere). Dr always said it was viral - the body fighting off something.
I think if he's fine and not complaining, they will disappear. Try not to sweat it.
