If you are deeply religious and the family as well..head to a Christian Bookstore for a nice baptismal token. It should not be about a gift rather about what the event is all about. A nice personalized bible would be great
Both of my children received a check for $100.00 that we put into savings accounts for them.
I'd ask your friend if she already has a baptismal gown. There are some GORGEOUS ones available, and it can really become an heirloom keepsake that you could provide for him.
Otherwise, yes, a personalized Bible as well as a simple Children's picture Bible would be nice.
In my experience this is not a gift situation. If you want to help with the baptismal outfit for the baby I am sure the parents won't turn you down. I am the godmother of 3 and no one expected a gift.

I had my brothers get this kit for my kids, it had a ceramic cross, a big and a bible. The kit also had a saying /poem in it for when they get married what to give their wife in it.
My kids got a cross neckless from their G-ma, and one of them got their baby foot print engraved into a gass frame.
My Mom bought the christening outfits so they can pass them down.

My daughter's godmother gave a a gold bracelet, godfather gave her a necklace with a pearl on it, every year they give her another pearl to add on to it, by the time she is 18 she will have a full necklace!
I think personally you should stay away from money, and get something a little personal!
