What's the Secret to Putting on Baby Shoes?

Okay, this is probably going to sound ridiculous, but I can't get normal shoes on my 17-month-old! It's not that he's uncooperative - I just can't get the things on his feet! He has one pair of "stretch" shoes from Babies 'R Us that we're able to get on, but they don't have any tread on the bottom. I have 3 or 4 pair of cute treaded shoes from Wal-Mart, Baby Gap, etc. that appear to be the same size (if not a little bigger) than the stretchy shoes, but I can't ever seem to get his heel in them!!!! Anyone else have this problem? Am I actually supposed to be using shoes that are 1 or 2 sizes too big for him?

What can I do next?

His feet are probably wide. The top part of my daughter's foot (above the arch - on top of foot) used to be kinda wide and so some shoes wouldn't fit her right either. I couldn't get her heels in them. Look for wide kid's shoes and see if that helps.

Assuming they are the correct size, we always found it easier to put them on if you open up the part w/velcro (or laces) as far as it will open, and almost pull out the tongue. Work it to loosen it up, insert foot and voila. No secret, just requires speed and patience! ;)

Definately have him sized at Stride Rite. Even if you don't buy the shoes there at least you will know his size. I was surprised that I had my daughter in shoes that were too small for her. She has worn Stride Rite ever since. There is also an outlet store in Albertville where they run about $30 instead of $50/ pair.

When my kids were toddlers I stuck with Robeez and Bobux. They stay on, they allow for pudgy feet, and they allow the child to feel the floor. They not good for walking outside in the snow but I never did arrive at a good solution for toddlers out in the snow.

Hi A. friend!!! We should've chatted about this last night in between all the satin that was flying! =) I would try the Robeez or the See Kai Run shoes--they have some now that have a better bottom for outside too. I agree with the rest of the moms...wide feet? I don't know that I would buy shoes that are too big, I would be afraid that he would trip! Have a great week! J.

Robeez are the only shoes I can get on my son's feet. They are not cheap new ($40), but you can get used ones for a song on Craigslist and eBay.

I had this problem with my daughter her feet were to wide. I took her to stride rite and special ordered her some shoes cost be about $50 bucks but was worth it. I had no choice it was that or wear slippers.

I would also go with the Stride Rite. I took my daughter and got her foot measured at their store. It turns out that I had her in the wrong size. It's hard to feel where their little toes are in most shoes. She has worn nothing but Stride Rites ever since. Also form the foot correctly they teach the child to walk heel to toe.
I wish my parents could have afford to put them on me when I was that age.

We always have our kids feet measured at Nordstroms. They are awesome and won't sell you anything unless your son really needs them! We recently brought our kids in, they remeasured their feet and said that they both have a few good months to go before needing any new shoes! Wow! What amazing service!!

They also make a big deal out of the kid's first walkers! Balloon and picture! They spend a lot of time making sure that the shoes fit and they have growing room, but not too much! And the best part is the shoes tend to last a lot longer then shoes we've gotten elsewhere - great if you're looking to pass them down!

Our son had really wide feet. We found the only shoes that really worked for him were from Stride Rite...we were able to get then in extra-wide. Once the front part of his feet fit in better the heel went in so much easier.
