What to Do About Persistent Baby Hair Tangles??

My 10 month old has a lot of hair and the back of her head is always matted and tangled. Every night, she gets a bath and I comb out the tangles. Every morning, she wakes up with it slightly tangled. By the end of the day, it's matted and even more tangled. It can be so bad that when I gently comb it out, it breaks the hair. What am I doing wrong?? Is it because she's sleeping on her wet hair? Help!

What can I do next?

Baby hair is fine and tangles easily. You can trim it, or use a detangler. I wouldn't put her down with wet hair, I mean do YOU go to bed with wet hair? It probably isn't very comfortable, and may make the matting worse (?) I don't know.

Agree to use a detangler. My daughter's hair still get super tangly. I used Johnson and Johnson when she was younger. Also, I've found that Wet brand brushes work really well with her hair. I don't know if your baby has enough hair for a brush, but they do make small sized ones too. Check them out. They are kind of expensive for a brush, but worth it. I only discovered them recently.

I would not put her to bed with wet hair.
Maybe you need to have it trimmed it so you can care for it better.

Braid it or put it in pig tails.
It doesn't have to be tight - loose braids are fine.
A French braid or a Dutch under braid (like corn rows) can go into pig tails and look really cute.
As long as the hair is loose, it's going to tangle.
Or get her a short haircut which won't be too hard to manage.

My babies' hair did this and my nephew's is doing the same. It's where their head rubs their mattress, car seats, etc.

I would try a de-tangling solution meant for babies. I use one on my older kids - just a spray in formula. Otherwise I wouldn't be able to get a comb through.

I suppose if that doesn't work you could try one of those little knit baby caps when she sleeps - to stop it from matting.

Gently combing out tangles from tip to roots is important even when using detangling products. A wide tooth comb may even be helpful in this cause especially if her hair is thicker and/or curly. I would even perhaps put a few braids in the hair with a rubber band or ribbon on the end to hold the braid. The braided hair will generally maintain a wavy pattern when taken out in the morning.

I hope this helps.

We use the Johnson's shampoo+conditioner (2 in 1). We also use the Johnson's "No more tangles" spray when we need to in the mornings.

I wouldn't attribute it just to the wet hair though. My daughter goes to bed with wet hair most nights and I go to bed with wet hair about half the nights. There is no difference in the morning whether I go to sleep with my hair wet or dry.

If you end up not liking the Wet brush, we like the Tangle Teezer - it works well on both wet and dry hair.. https://smile.amazon.com/Tangle-Teezer-Salon-Detangle-Hai...

The trick to to put the detangler or cream rinse on the hair BEFORE you wash it. Hair absorbs best when it is dry.

Well, what sort of shampoo and conditioner are you using? That's where I'd start.

Baby shampoo is horrible for hair. If you don't think so just try it on your own hair, one time. No conditioner or anything. Just shampoo. It's horrible and your hair is just nasty feeling.

Use regular gentle shampoo and a touch of conditioner. Rinse it well and it will be fine.

If you don't want to use regular shampoo then simply use only conditioner. I haven't used shampoo in about 3 years. It made my scalp itch so much that I would claw it until it bled. I stopped washing my hair and only use Dove Conditioner. My hair is clean and soft and wonderful. You don't have to use soap/shampoo on your hair.
