What to Feed When Baby Food Is Refused?

My 9 1/2 month old son has decided he hates baby food and spits it out. I keep trying to feed him and he just cries. I have tried all different varieties and things he use to love. He only has one tooth on the bottom so he can't just go right into eating regular food. He still has a touch of GERD as well so I have to avoid things with tomato, etc. that will upset his tummy. Any advice would be great!

What can I do next?

My daughter did the same thing when she was 8 months old. She didn't have any teeth but we put her on solid foods because there was nothing else we could do. Just start with really mushy foods and make sure they are cut up right. If it scares you to feed her solids than you might want to look up an infant cpr/first aid class. It really helped my husband and I feel better about her eating solids with no teeth when we knew what to do if she choked. She's 18 months now with only four teeth and amazes me with what she eats. Hope it goes well for you!

Try tofu! Its probably something that you don't think about or would eat yourself, but its great for babies. Don't be intimidated at it. You'll find it in the produce section. Buy the firm or extra firm variety. When you open the package you can remove it from the package and refrigerate it in a plastic container and fill it with drinking water and not tap water. Check the expiration date on the box B4 you toss the box and write that date on a piece of scotch tape and tape it to your plastic container. Change the water everytime you use the tofu or touch it. To use, just cut a strip and then lay it down and cut small cube pieces about the size of say a cheerio, but cubed. This is great for hands eye coordination as well. Let your baby pick it up into pieces himself while you try to feed him by spood or fork. Just because your baby doesn't like it the first time, don't give up on it. Reintroduce it to him again in a couple of days. You've already bought it, try it again. Tofu is mild and has basically no flavor, but the texture is perfect for babies.

Alvacados. Cut them up into cubed pieces and let him go at it. This one will get messy but at least its something different and nutritious. Its full of good fat, so go at it.

Rice soup. Use Thai Jasmine Rice. You can find it at any markets in the asian food section and even Wal-Mart carries it. Cook one part rice to 2-3 part water in a medium pot and just let it come to a boil and continue for another 5-10 minutes. Let it cool then serve your child. The rice should be muschie with a watery consistancy. Not the dry kind that you would have with your meal.

Good luck.

Get a little mini blender or food processor. Regular food you feed the rest of your family like green beans, carrots, and even meat mixed with chicken broth or beef broth can be turned into homemade baby food. As he gets a little older, you can leave it a little chunkier and then when he is old enough for finger foods you can leave them whole. My son was the same way, and just liked to gum the real food he hated the taste of baby food.

For a 9 1/2 month old, you may want to try a scrambled egg, mashed potatoes, oatmeal, rice, mashed bananas. There are so many soft foods that babies can chew on, even without teeth. The baby is probably bored with baby food.
