When Did Your Baby Begin Saying 'Real' Words?

My daughter just turned 1yr old a couple of weeks ago. She is at a point now where she really babbles all of the time. The words she says are not 'real' words, but her made up baby talk, but she certainly sounds like she is talking about something important..haha. It amazes me because she has the tones and inflections of an older child or adult who is speaking normal sentences. I was just curious as to when your babies began to speak real words. She says 'mama' and 'dada' just like any other baby, but has yet to say any other actual words.

What can I do next?

I do have to agree that one day you will start to hear real words because she is talking now just isn't forming the sounds like we do!! Before you know it they will turn into real ones!! My 7 year old talked full sentences at 16 months but we never baby talked to him and he was raised with nothing but adults....all my other kids are grown so he had alot of older ones always around talking to him just like we do so just keep talking to her like a big girl and before you know it so will she!! Good luck and enjoy every second with her because before you know it they are all grown up!!! D.

That sounds about right to me. My son was an early learner..he talked really early..but around 18mo I think is when they start saying "real" words. Her own language will just one day progress into something that you can understand.

My daughter is 16 months old. I guess she was around 12 months or so when she started saying a few other words. Her first word after "mama" & "dada" was "dog." She LOVES dogs, so that was no surprise! haha Then after that she learned "ball", then "uh oh", and "go". We also think she is trying to say "good dog", "bird", and "car". She loves cars, and she will sign the word "car" (we are teaching her sign language) and she kinda says "car".

It sounds like your daughter is on the right track. The babbling is her practicing to make the sounds that we make. If there are some little words that you would like her to learn to say, then say the words to her a lot. My daughter would get excited to see any dog (whether it was in person, on TV, or in a picture). Every time she saw one, we would point to it and say "dog" several times. Hearing it over and over again helped her learn how to say it.

My little girl is 18 months old and is just now starting to really what you would say talk. She like your little girl has babbled for a long time, and said a few words, like mama and dada but in the last month is when her vocabulary has really started to expand. It sounds to me like your little girl is right on track with her development.

My son is almost 15 months and he can say a couple of things like hi, boo, dog, he can bark (apparently he really likes our 2 dogs, and seems like he is trying to repeat words that you say though he doesn't know the meaning. But it was after he turned 1 (maybe 13 months or so) when he started trying to say words.
