When to Switch Completely from Baby Food to Table Foods

My daughter is almost 11 months old. She has been eating 2nd foods, 3rd foods, and table foods for quite some time. She sometimes completely rejects the spoon for baby food at a mealtime, and I feed her only table foods. She seems pretty ready to give up baby foods, but I was just curious what other moms have done. I know each baby is different, but I'm interested to hear what ages other babies went to eating only adult foods. Thanks.

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your advice and for sharing your experiences with me. I think I won't be buying any more baby food!!! I just can't believe she's starting to leave "baby-hood" already! Her mommy isn't quite ready for "toddler-hood" just yet. :)

It is funny because my daughter is 9 months and no where near ready to be off of baby food. She just cut her first two teeth a week ago though so she has nothing to chew with. I make a lot of her baby food and she does eat real apple sauce, but has gagged whenever I gave her more chunky food. Feel lucky, I am ready for a better eater.

Hi! By 12 months, I started giving my daughter all table foods. I would buy several different cans of veggies (corn, green beas, carrots, black eye peas, etc.) and give her an assortment at mealtime along with some cut up fruit, avacado, shredded cheese, etc. At first, I was scared to death that she would choke on solids, but you have to start sometime for them to practice grinding the food with their teeth and gums. It helps to cut everything up (about the size of a kernal of corn at first) and keep it on hand in the fridge. Also, make sure you don't give her anything she can't "chew" with her gums like apple unless it is small enough to swallow whole (like if you grated it.) I hope this helps! It's fun to get them going on "real" foods and see them discover what their tastes are. This morning,I gave my 13 month old some grapefruit for the 1st time and she loved it! :)

My daughter (a 2nd) was completely off baby food @ 8 months. You are right all babies are different. Just follow her lead as long as she can chew & swallow well.

Good luck & welcome to the messy world of self feeding.

Hi there! All three of my children were eating *most* of the same foods as the rest of the family by 11 months.

My daugter starting eating real food at 7 months. I would still give her a little bit of baby food or juice so that it would help break up the whole food.

i think it depends on how many teeth she has as to what she can eat. about this age i started giving my girls oatmeal in the morning. you can use flavored oatmeal or regular and start putting things like yogurt or applesauce in it as well. then we went on to mashed potatoes, etc. table food tastes much better than baby food. just make sure you cut up things no bigger than her thumb nail and keep an eye on her 4 food groups.
good luck

I'm going through the same thing. My son cut 6 teeth in 7 weeks and I think he's getting more. When he sees mommy and daddy eating table food he wants some too even after eating his baby food. When I do offer him our food I just make sure it isn't loaded with sugars, too much salt or seasoning.
Daddy went to have thanksgiving lunch at his daycare since mommy couldn't go and daddy said Keenan ate half of his lunch and that was after eating carrots. Daddy called on his way back from lunch saying he was still hungry since he had to share his lunch. LoL

I think it depends on the baby, and how well they handle solids. My 9 month old is pretty much boycotting baby food. She will eat it every once in a while, but she eats table foods for most meals. She will still eat applesauce and cereal in the morning, and loves yogurt, but that is about all she will take from a spoon. She has always chewed very well though, and we started her on some table food (steamed veggies, bananas, pasta, etc) around 7 months, b/c she showed an interest very early. As long as she is getting what she needs, and is digesting everything okay....then she should be fine on table foods.

My daughter is 11 months old and decided at about 10 months that she wasn't going to eat baby food anymore. My problem was that she didn't like much in the way of table food either, so we had a lot of macaroni and cheese and hotdogs for a few weeks. Now she is doing great and eats a large variety of foods. The only baby food she still eats is the cereal, mainly because I am trying to finish up the box so I don't waste it.

If your daughter eats table foods, then it's fine to give up the baby food. If she is pushing away and turning her head from the baby food, then she is ready to be done with it. She is getting plenty of nutrition from the table food and it probably tastes a lot better!

Good luck!

I have an 8 month old who refuses to eat any babyfood. She gags if any sort of babyfood goes in her mouth. We started giving her little pieces of our food to munch on, and now she is eating whatever we eat. As long as she has enough teeth to chew and the bites are managable enough - you're 11 month old will do fine on table food!!

Hi C.,

My son is 3 now, but I remember that before his first birthday he was eating strictly what we ate. I did make all of his baby food, so he had gotten chunks of chicken, pieces of cooked veggies, etc. for a while before, but yes, my 2 cents would be 11 months is right about the same time mine wanted more texture & big people food. Another tip - I did start him on Pediasure drink right about that time as well, just for the lost nutrients - when he stopped liking that, we went to vitamins.

Hope it helps!

With my 4 it was somewhere between 9 and 12 months. Personally I never even bothered w/ the step 3 things or the toddler foods.
Enjoy!

One of mine was done with baby food by 8 months, the other around 9 months. If she doesn't have her own toddler-sized silver-ware, you might get her some to practice with. Mine both liked it when I'd put a bite of food on the little fork and hand it to them.

You know there really isnt any specific time...my daughter will be 4 in Feb and still loves all the baby food fruits and some of the mixed dinners as a snack. I figure its better for her to eat that for a snack if she likes it than some of the other stuff thats not as good for her. This is also a good way to sneak in all the fruits/veggies required for a day and they dont mind or notice. Just give you baby what you feel comfortable and what they can handle thats what I did...good luck. ....I always do try to make sure she eats the smae thing we do at dinner I may have had to alter it some when she was younger but its impt to not them have the control over the food and have you making 3 diff things for one meal.
