Why Does My Baby Make So Many Noises While Sleeping?

This is my first post/question. I have a 5 week old (he was born premature at 36.4) and I have noticed he will make really loud sounds when he sleeps. He sort of sounds angry or a little bit like a gremlin...? Does anyone know if this is normal? I’m a first-time mama, so any insight is much appreciated. Note: he does have reflux issues, but I am not sure that this is related.

What can I do next?

One of mine made little sounds when he slept. Kind of snuffly.

He actually ended up having allergies now that I think about it.

Just mention it to his pediatrician, but better yet, video it.

It's likely nothing - but better to just check it out. In our case, our baby outgrew it.

I was shocked at all the sleeping noises my baby made when my first was born. It's strange, but normal. Mine was in a crib in his own room from day 1, and finding the volume balance on the baby monitor took some time - loud enough so that I could hear if something was wrong, but quiet enough that every little sound he made didn't wake me.

ETA: This post reminds me that we nicknamed our second baby "Groany" for the first few weeks, because he made a groaning noise when he slept. Nonetheless, I agree with others that to be on the safe side, a video with your phone to show to the ped at your next appointment is a good idea (I assume your appointments are still pretty frequent, if not, a quick call doesn't hurt).

Some babies can make noises but I honestly think you should talk to his Pedi.

Our son squeaked as he slept the first few weeks of his life.
We joked that that's what baby oil is for.
Our pediatrician was not concerned.
Everything was new and noises happen.
When they are so new they are still getting fluid out of their lungs.
Really your pediatrician is your first best source for the best information to help you feel better.

Granted our son is 20 years old now and I didn't even have a laptop (or cellphone or even a beeper) when he was born.
Even if I had one - there's no way I would have had the time to boot it up.
The first 8 weeks was a bit of a blur - I was so sleep deprived I could hardly see straight.
After 8 weeks things seemed to settle a little bit and I was getting enough sleep to function on a more basic level.
Put down the computer and if you have concerns - call your pediatrician.
They have 24 hr nurse answer lines - use them!
Concentrate on getting as much sleep as you can.
When baby naps - so should you.
Everything else you think you need to do will still be there later on.

Hard to know. I'd suggest you use your phone (or someone else's) to record the audio and even the video at the same time, and show it to the pediatrician. That will be far more helpful than trying to describe it. I would do that with any baby, but especially a preemie. You'll feel better if you do, and if there's any reason for concern, the sooner you alert the doctor, the better.

Most babies make noises when they sleep. They also smile and coo while sleeping. My grandmother used to say they are talking to the angels. It's probably nothing but I would bring it up at his next appointment. Congrats on your little one..
