Fellow cake bakers...I'm baking a cake for my grandmother's 90th birthday party. It will be two round stacked tiers. I think that the last time I did one for a similar crowd, I used a 10" and 8" and I didn't like the proportions (the top was too big for the bottom). I think that for another party, I did a 6" top and 10" bottom and like the proportions and we had no problems serving 50 people, but I can't be sure. The Wilton serving guide for wedding cake portions says that a 10" serves 39 and 6" serves 14, which would in theory leave us a few slices short. If I move up to 12" and 8" though then we've got 80 servings.

So for those with experience...what sizes should I use to serve 50 and maintain that ideal proportion between the two tiers? Thanks!

What can I do next?

I can't be sure how to answer your question but you could do what we did for our wedding. Bake a "show" cake to the proportions you like and then have a sheet cake for the extra portions.

Have a great day and congrats to your grandmother!

I would do the larger sizes. Chances are you won't be left with as much as you think. A lot of times the pieces get cut bigger than is recommended (unless you're a professional cake cutter) and people eat more than one piece. If there's extra, just send it home with people It's way better to have to much than to have guests that don't have cake :)

I think it would be better to have too much rather than too little. Have fun.

I think you should ask - how big are your slices going to be. If the server is serving the cake like they do at weddings then I believe you can get 39 servings from a 10" cake but most people don't cut slivers of cake from a round cake. I guess on that note you also need to count the number of guests that won't eat cake or some that will eat more than one slice. I would also agree that more is better and you can always send some home with the guests if you don't want to keep it all. I think that the the 12" and 8" tier makes a better proportion as well, a 10" and 6" tier will make the top layer seem to small I think.
