2 Months and Still Crying

This request is for my brother and his wife. They have a new baby who is now 2 months old. He is a very fussy little boy, who crys for 3-4 hours most afternoons. He is an breast fed baby, and sleeps well at night (waking a few times to eat and goes right back to sleep). My sister in law is at her wits end, and said "its like he hates his life" because he crys so much of each day. Some things will work to settle him some of the time, rocking, shushing, swinging, but nothing is sure to work everytime, and sometimes he will just scream for hours. She recently went back towork at an in-home daycare and brings him with her every day, but says that she feels guilty getting paid to be there because most afternoons she is busy trying to comfort her own baby.

Does anyone have any advice I can share with her? Anyone who has been through something similar who can relate? I don't know what to tell her, and feel so bad that she and my brother have not really been able to enjoy being parents these first few months.

What can I do next?

My son also cryed like this his Dr said it was colic. He finally out grew it at 7months, so there is hope in site. The best things that worked for me were drinking fennel tea, it is a natral anti bloating/ anti gas. I also gave him over the counter simethicone target brand drops, it really helped. Warm baths with lavender baby wash. Singing row row row the boat while bending his leggs to his chest (often this made him expell HUGE amounts of gas more than you would think could fit in a baby) I tryed not having any lactose and it didn't seem to have any effect, I also avoided a long list of gas causing foods but they didn't seem to be the problem. I hope this helps, some times knowing that other people have had the same difficulties also helps.

I have 2 children and one on the way. Both of my kids screamed what seemed like non stop for the 1st year of their lives. I too breast fed them - the first for 16 1/2 months and the second for 21 1/2 months. At times it seemed as if my marriage was going to end becuase of the stress of the crying. We never found out "medically" what was wrong but now believe that it was tummy stuff and really bad gas that they weren't able to push out themselves. We constantly gave them the gas drops - sometimes it seemed to work - other times it didn't. My first son really was soothed by tummy massage - I highly recommend it at least to try. My 2nd son didn't so much like his tummy being touched and tensed up so much that you couldn't even massage anyway. It's a really really hard struggle - I can so relate. My boys are now almost 4 and almost 2. They have gas like you wouldn't believe and coming from a modest family I now appreciate bodily fuctions and celebrate and clap every time they "fart"!! Hang in there - find someone you can talk to - cry on their shoulders - simply get someone who can take the child for even 20 minutes to get away from the crying. It will pass - but I can't tell you when. Hound your doctor for reasons why this is happening. Know it's ok to be tired, angry and frustrated. Cry as often as you can - it brings so much relief to your body and mind. Do try the massage!!

I've been there my second child is like that - it does get shorter. My Daughter would cry for 4 or 5 hours a night the first two months. now she's down to 15 - 30 minutes of fussing before she settles down. She is almost 5 months old so there is hope. One other thing is to give the baby a nuke and hold the babies hnads about chest level well rocking . there is a great book out called the happiest baby on the block by Harvey Karp. It really helped us out...

I had a similar issue with my second child. She seemed to cry all the time, just never happy, I tried the simithicone, I tried the Dr. Brown's bottles, I was breast feeding and switched to the formulas, I tried the lactose free formula, the gentle-ease, it seemed anything and nothing would set her off for the first 6 weeks. I took any advise anyone would give me just for some relief.
I finally took her to a chiropractor. Within 3 visits, she was notice-ably different!! After 5 visits over the course of 2 months, she was all but a happy little girl! If your insurance will cover even a little bit, do it! It saved my sanity. And believe me, I felt like I was going to go insane. Now, she is 8 months and happy happy happy, but those first couple of months were awful!

J.,

I would recommend reading the book Happiest Baby on the Block by Dr. Harvey Karp. There are several suggestions in the book that worked well for myself, as well as for my cousin who also had a "collicky" baby. Also, let your sister-in-law know that this almost always gets better after the 3rd month.

Good luck!

I would try a few dif. things
1 go to dr.'s and find out if he has GERDS (Its like acid reflux)
2 try the stroller, or carrying him before it starts, try to not tense up, and check the normal things that could bother him
sleepy, hungry, noise, needs to burp

I have a 7 mo. old that I watch during the day and he has GERDS before his mom got him on zantac (perscribed by the DR) It was all we could do to get through the day.

Hope for the best

"Secrets of the Baby wisperer (How to Calm, Connect and Communicate with your baby") by Tracy Hogg with Melinda Blau is a really good resource. It's by a woman who has been a nanny for years and she shars her secrets....this is a really good book to read to get a lot of methods for handling various situations.

There is another book by the same author that expands on the methods from the first book and how to implement them. It is called "The baby Wisperer solves all your problems (By teachingyou how to ask the right questions)"

My daycare lady told me about the first book and I found the second at the book store. I found it very helpful...unfortunatly I didn't get to reading them until he was about 4 months old.....but it still is helpfull and I intend to read them again before I have my second.

J. s,

I might suggest a few things. There is a possibility that some of the foods the mom is eating/drinking during the day is effecting the baby. He may not be reacting at night because she isn't eating/drinking at night. Secondly, I would suggest have the mom take the little one to a chiropractor that works with babies/children. Who knows what the baby physically experienced during the delivery(vaginal or c-section). Lastly, you might try digestive enzymes that is put into the breast milk which might help the little one digest the milk proteins better.

First, I can totally relate! It's so hard! My son was the same way except it was 7pm to 12am every night! I tried to limit MY lactose intake and it worked. Now I'm not breastfeeding anymore and he's on soy formula, at 9 months. It may be a shot in the dark but someone suggested it to me and turns out my little guy doesn't do well with lactose! Tell them to hang on. It WON'T last forever even though it seems like it will. Also, try gas drops. Sometimes that helps, too.
GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
