My triplets just had anextensive ultrasound and they were moving so much that it was hard to see and it took 4 hours. I was told that triplet C had a 2 vessel cord. But everything else looked good as far as the organs, unless she didn't want to tell me. I see the doctor Dec 12th to get the results. I, of course, researched for 2 days now to find out about it. I was wondering if anyone in this group experienced this and the outcome. Thanks

What can I do next?

I have a one-year old girl who had a 2 vessel cord and no issues at all. She was born healthy and the cord stood up just fine to 18 hours of labor and 2 hours of pushing. I really wouldn't worry about this as long as it looks like the baby is developing well. Take care and try not to worry too much about this. And congratulations on triplets! :)

Hi, usually babies have 3 vessels in their unbilical cord- 2 arteries and one vein- usually there is no significant threat to baby's health and they are born fine- but what the major risk is during delivery. Dr's are worried that the cord wont be able to withstand the pressure during contractions or when baby passes through the birth canal. Most babies are usually fine; the dr's just take extra care when monitoring the baby to make sure baby's heart rate doesn't drop.

So how does all this apply to you and your triplets?
Well, since you are having triplets you are most likely going to have a scheduled c-section to deliver all the babies- I would say 99.9% of hospitals do c-section for triplets- and in that case there is less likelyhood for any kind of compromises on the cord because the c-section usually occurs before contractions have started and the babies wont be delivered vaginally, so there's no worrry there.

I hope this answered your question- and I would suggest that if you have any more concers to talk with your dr about it.

And good luck with your growing family.

It seems the biggest concern of a 2 vessel cord is IntraUterine Growth Restriction (IUGR) which would be cause for intervention. But smaller birth weight babies are expected with triplets anyway. SO eat, eat, eat, and eat for your babies! Lots of water, protein (eggs are best) and salt to taste. Here is a good article I found on the web. I hope it helps.
