Try giving him 2 oz of pear juice. That always worked like a charm for my son. Gerber makes it.
Good luck!
My 3 month old son is having a lot of pooping problems lately. He used to go 3 to 4 times a day but in the last couple of weeks his poop changed color to a darkish brown goowy consistency and he has a really hard time going. He hasn't pooped in over 48 hours and I'm really concerned. He's definitely feeling a lot of discomfort. He passes a lot of gas which is very stinky. Any advice or help? I'm worried sick!

My ped. recommended giving my little ones gerber pear juice, it works like prune juice but it tastes better and smells better!! They told me to start with 2 ounces. Good luck.
Don't worry A., as long as he still passes stool he should be fine. My son did the same thing, all of a sudden changed his routine on me. My pediatrician saids as long as he isn't having hard stool and is not having discomfort about it that it's ok. I've also started to massage his butt and lower abdomen - don't know if it helps but since then he's been going every other day so who knows! You'll know best for yours :)
My daughter had similar problems. Her doctor put her on prune juice. It really helped. I would always talk to your doctor first.
Has anything in his diet changed lately? Is he drooling a lot like he maybe starting to teeth? Try giving him some Mylicon gas relief drops. It should help his discomfort and help him relax. Once he relaxes his stomach muscles, he should be able to have a bm.
Keep an eye, on his tummy. As long as his tummy is soft, he's ok. If it gets hard, check with the dr. If he doesn't go by tomorrow, I'd have him checked.
Good luck,

My son's "poo schedule" changed from several a day to once every few days when he was around 4 months old. I, of course, freaked out but our ped. said it was totally normal for breastfed babies!
Our doctor did tell me that if he looked uncomfortable or was straining to poop, give some Karo syrup mixed with warm water in a bottle. It totally did the trick...poo city!! Just don't dress your little guy in anything nice when you're trying this :)
Are you breastfeeding? It is normal for breastfed babies to poop less as their digestive system matures around 8-14 weeks.
Talk to your baby's doctor about formula changes, if you're on formula. If you're really concerned, and brave, and if it's been a long time since a bowel movement, you could always do the good ol' rectal thermometer. Lube, insert, wiggle gently, and better make sure you have an absorbent (and disposable)material under your baby. I had to do this for my son per our home care nurse from Upper Cheasapeake. It's gross, but it makes a happy baby!
Try not to get too worried. I have been assured with all 3 of my children by my pediatrician, that it is completely normal. I completely understand your concern. Our dinner conversation would consist of how many days it had been since a baby poop. Mine would not go for 3 or 4 days at a time. I was thrilled to see your concern. I always felt for the child that was "struggling". The joys of motherhood. Who knew?? Good Luck to you, and your little "stinker". :)
Did he recently start on cereal? That seemed to plug both of my kids up. My doctors always suggested giving my sons apple, pear or prune juice. If that didn't work, I was supposed to give the kids a teaspoon of dark KARO (spelling?) syrup. If that doesn't work, I would certainly call a pediatrician. The "concern" date was always a week (if they still hadn't gone), but if your son seems in a lot of discomfort, I'd go sooner.
I'm sorry! I hope some of this works for you. Good luck!
The dark kayro worked for my baby. One tsp twice a day. Also, we had to switch him to gentlease formula! That made all the difference. Now he's almost a year and we're having the problems again. He hates to eat baby foods and won't drink juice. It's a pain! Good luck.
1 tsp of Karo syrup in the bottle always works for my son. We had similar issues when I began supplementing him with formula because his system was used to the breastmilk. Now he is fine with either breastmilk or formula.
Hi,
My one daughter also had trouble going to the bathroom. Our pediatrician said for us to put Kastro Oil into her bottle. I think it was 1 to 2 tablespoons twice a day. It really did help her go a lot easier. I would just double check with your pediatrician first. Another friend's child also has cronic constipation and is turning 6, has to be on miralax. Anyway the doctor said not to be worried about not going to the bathroom until its over three days. Once or twice when we needed our other daughters to go the bathroom to we would put a vaseline on the end of a thermometer and put it in her bottom. Sometimes the act of putting the therometer in the bottom will stimulate the muscles to start moving and make them go. I hope that helps.

When my son was a baby (can't remember the exact age but it was under 4 months) he was constipated for a few days and we called the doctor whos advice wasn't exactly rocket science. He told us to just give him water with a little bit of prune juice in it, thanks doc. It seemed to work though, he had a bowel movement the next morning. If your doctor's office has a nurse hotline or an on call doctor I would call and see what they recommend. I hope your little one feels better soon.
try sugarfree candy. dr said it has naturel laxitives.
I used to help my little one by measuring her temperature - rectally. My doctor told me it is normal for them not to go for two or three days (for breastfed babies, anyways). I would help her when I saw that she was getting uncomfortable.
But check with her ped as well, to be on the safe side.
have a pediatrician check him. If you're not seeing results and comfort in your baby, find a pediatric specialist for gastrointestinal concerns.
If your baby's discomfort remains, you are the one to speak up for him!
If the doctor wants to wait, always ask for the first change that would indicate calling the Dr. again. Get at least one more symptom other than "fever" because some children don't get "hot" enough. They show other symptoms (like breathing changes, wakefulness, new pain in one area, etc.), and 3 months is too young to know how his body will communicate a problem.
clear Karo Syrup is a natural stool softener-just a spoonful in the formula. Ask you Pediatrician about it. Mine had me put it in my sons formula-he was always 'hard'. It works with no nasty side effects- very gentle- no explosions! LOL!
First of all do you breast feed or use formula?? That will make all the difference in the advice I would give and the advice you should listen to.
Sorry to hear your son is having troubles! You should call your ped. and see what they recommend, but I have always heard that taking a rectal temperature will help the baby poop. I know it sounds weird but I have read that on numerous websites. I guess sticking it in with the vaseline helps loosen everything up or something. But you should probably call the ped. before doing anything. Good Luck!
My girls went through the same around the same time... The doc recomended some Karo syrup in the formula. I tried that a time or two and it worked. when it happened again, I felt guilty about all the sugar in Karo so I would give them 2-4 oz of water throughout the day and that softened the stool. They still suffer from horrible stinky gas and constipation, but they usualy go every 48 hrs and the doc said it was OK. If you really feel uncomfortable, get him checked out. They aren't kidding when they say mother's intuition. If you really really feel something's wrong, there probably is something wrong. Follow your gut instinct, you can't go wrong.. Good luck and I'll send some poopy mantra your way...
First of all, talk to your pediatrician before you give him anything other than his normal diet. If he's breastfed, this is most likely completely normal. I have no idea about formula since I didn't use it. My pediatrician recommended diluted pear juice if they hadn't pooped in 3 days. But definitely talk to your pediatrician if you are concerned.
Call your pediatrician. Dark and gooey could be OK and depending on his food, but it could be something more serious. Call and ask, they may want you to bring a stool sample. Be prepared, put some in a double plastic bag in the frig, and see if they want it.
my daughter went thru some poopy problems when she was itty bitty too. my daughter was formula fed...is your son? If so it might be that the formula just isn't agreeing with his stomach. our pedi changed the formula for my daughter which might be the solution to your probablem...however you should discuss it with your childs peds first! Another thing that helped was adding a tbsp of gerber juice to the milk (in our case was formula) in one or two bottles a day. That seemed to help loosen her stool until she got back on a reg poop schedule =) Good Luck!
Take him to the doctors! It could be a formula problem or a sensitivity to something in your diet if you are breastfeeding or it could be a GI issue.
First, this is really something to discuss with the pediatrician. Anything anyone suggests you give your child here might be dangerous so always discuss things like that with the pediatrician. It's ok to ask him about things people suggest here but not to give him anything without getting an ok from the pediatrician. You didn't say if your son is on formula or breastfeeding and if you've started giving him cereal yet (which isn't advised until at least 4 months old and preferably not until 6 months to decrease the chances he'll have food allergies). Anyways, my son always suffered from a lot of gas so his pediatrician recommended we regularly give him Mylicon drops (every 2-2.5 hours). That helped him a lot. Of course, check with your pediatrician. Those will help with the gas but not with the constipation so you really need to ask the pediatrician what to do since your son seems to be in a lot of discomfort. It might be that once the discomfort from the gas is gone, everything will be fine. The color of the poop does change with age as well as the consistency, but if he's not on solids yet, the consistency shouldn't change to completely solid yet. So please talk to the pediatrician about this and ask about Mylicon drops. It made a world of difference to my son, but you do have to give it every 2-2.5 hours. At that age it's 0.3 ml each time. But the doctor will tell you the dose anyways. Good luck!
