My son has been throwing up now for 5 days. I took him to the ER and they told me to take him to his Ped. I took him there and they said as long as I kept him hydrated he would be fine. They boy hasn't eaten anything in about 3 days. He is usually very hyper and he won't walk around anymore. He just lies there. He won't even get up to go to the bathroom. Does anyone have any advice on what to do?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the advice. We got him through the tummy bug and he seemed to be feeling better. Now his colitis is acting up so we'll see where that goes.

My experience has been that hydration really is the most important. If he has a hard time keeping fluids down, try giving him a tablespoon at a time every 5 minutes or so and try Gatorade. There's something about Gatorade that helps, I think maybe the sodium. If he has a fever and gets dehydrated, the dehydration can cause the fever to spike which then adds to dehydration.

I hope he's feeling better soon. Good luck!

Take him back to the ER and really push. If he's still the same or worse then when you brought him in the first time, they'll want to see him. Also, you may get another doctor who will be more thorough.

Sweetie, I hope I am not overstepping my boundaries here but I would take my child to the ER and park my butt there until they figure out what is wrong with him, he should be at least getting up to use the potty. Your ped. should have ran some tests, I think this is going on too long, especially if he is just lying there.

Good Luck and please update us.

Start finding someone who will listen or get him to ER and refuse to leave. Trust your "heart". I waited 6 days while communicating to Docs and then... After 2 months in the hospital, it all turned out fine after but I still regret not following my "gut feelings".

Are you close to Childrens Hospital in Pittsburgh? If so, take him there. Your son has all the signs they tell me to look for when my baby was sick that means its serious business and bring to the ER immediately.

I am not a doctor, but I did read a article recently about a young girl who was fine and then all of a sudden had the same symptoms, and refused to eat. She saw many DR's. The gastroentologist called it. She was allergic to Gluten and anythinng in it. she was about 8 before it striked. It doesn't require a fever or any other symptoms, but upset stomach, bath room runs, and fatigue. You might want to check it out.
Best of luck to you and your child.
you might want to look at this sights: althought there are hundreds of others...

Well, I think the first thing you should do is take him back to the ER and INSIST they run some tests. Then, I would find a new pediatrician. I don't know where you're from, but my son, my boyfriend and I all go to Dr. Lisa Robertson. She's not a pediatrician, but she's been my doctor for about 7 years, and she's WONDERFUL.

I am so sorry to hear about your son. That is so awful when you feel like there is nothing you can do. I have 3 kids 7,5 and 9 weeks. I don't know if you have tried any chiropractic care. A lot of times when their bodies are not working correctly for some reason that no one can explain, chiro works. My husband is a chiropractor and our children have been adjusted since the day their were born. It is AMAZING how much chiropractic helps. His body isn't working properly if he is adjusted and put his spine back in line that can take pressure of certain nerves and return his body to working order. If you have any questions my husband can answer for you please let me know I can put you in touch with him. Our children are definitly worth researching for. Good Luck.

Hi M.,

If he has no need to go to the bathroom, he's dehydratred. If he can't keep even fluids down, take him back to the ER, they will give him an IV. He needs it. He will definitely perk up after that. How long since he urinated, drank anything?

I had my son get that way once, and my peds gave me the option to take him to the ER, because he couldn't keep anything down, I did and he didn't even complain when they put the IV in. He felt much better afterwards and all we had to do was wait for him to start urinating again.

Don't take a chance, just go!!!

Let me know how things go. I'll keep you in my thoughts!

Hello M.,
My son is two and went through the same thing over Christmas. I called his Ped and got an her answering service and was told to call another Ped covering for her. He has never even met my child, but was telling me he was fine and to give him tea. He had not had a wet diaper for over 12 hrs. He is also a very active child and all he did was lay around on the couch. If I gave him anything to drink, he'd vomit it back up and then dry heave. I finally took him to the ER and they gave him IV's to rehydrate him. He perked up while there for a little bit, then started getting lethargic again. We took him home and they to bring him back if he did not have a wet diaper in another 6-8 hrs. Well needless to say we went back and they ended up admitting him. He had IV's from 5 AM to about 5 PM. He was back to his normal self again. It turns out that they didn't give him enough fluid the first time.

Anyway, make sure you tell your Ped that he's not going to the bathroom. He's going to be dehyrdated very soon if he's not already.

hi M.

my son when he was 4 had a real bad flu..he just layed around like your son is doing and wouldn't eat or drink he was very lethargic which is another word for being to weak to move around my 4 yr old would lay there and moan well i kept taking him back to the er and they finally admitted him for 4 days then they released him after they gave him fluids and got him to eat one meal..as soon as i took him home he was lethargic all over again i took him back to the pediatrition that night he wouldn't even suck on a popsicle they said he should have never been released and readmitted him for 2 more days..if you know there is something wrong with your child fight for him/her because most of the time we are right we know our child and no matter if he has a bad flu it can be harmful if he is going 5 days without food and is vommitting he will eventually get dehydrated and get very sick so just watch out for the signs if his lips are getting chapped really bad he is not taking in enough fluids and take him back to the er..i hope your son feels better.

Take him back to the ER!!! Or perhaps another hospital for another opinion. The first time you took him he may not have been dehydrated and may be by now. I thin you have to be persistent and follow your gut. Once a child is labile it is more serious and if he won't even get up to go to the bathroom, it may be more serious now. It may just be a severe stomache virus but his symptoms are worsening I would pursue further care. It is better to be safe and hear that everything is okay to at least put your mind at rest!

I don't know how close you are to Philadelphia but CHOP (childrens hospital of philadelphia) is excellent and so is UPenn Hospital in University City. Whatever you do, you need to take your son back to the hospital and don't let them brush you off, like some doctors love to do, sometimes Dr. Mom knows best! Good luck and please let us all know how your son is doing.

If your son is not urinating he is dehydrated. It is important that you offer him small amounts of fluid frequently rather than having him try to drink a large amount all at once which could cause more vomiting. Try popsicles, pedialyte, or flat ginger ale. Avoid anything carbonated, too sweet, or too thick(milk). If he continues to have no urinary output, call your doctor because he may need an IV. Hang in there!

Uh ...Yeah...If he doesn't eat something TODAY take him back to the e.r. and DEMAND they run more tests to find out what is wrong...and by the way, don't take him to union hosp (I call it "onion" because it really stinks!) Remember, the doctors work for US. If you are not satisfied with any answer they give you, it is their job to make sure we are healthy and satisfied and if you are not, find a doctor that does help you.
Blessings,

Hi M.-

My son (3 and a half years) had been vomiting with diarrhea on and off for about two and a half weeks. I took him to Night time pediatrics and they seemed concerned but told me to take him to his regular pediatrician. I took him to his pediatrician and got the usual "it is probably just a virus" routine. I am not a pushy person at all but I pushed for blood tests and a more thorough exam. Everything came back negative and my son slowly started to get back to his old self.
I guess my point is that we pay health insurance costs for a reason and if you are truly concerned, by all means push for better tests or IV fluids if you feel he is not getting enough at home. Hope he feels better!

M.. Call your pediatrician back IMMEDIATELY and let them know that he has gotten worse. Explain his behavior. If they don't think it is worthy of seeing him again, find another doctor or take him back to the ER. Have they done bloodwork on him? Anything besides just look at him from the outside?

Your mentioned that your son is no longer getting up. Does this mean he can, but is too exhausted, or he can't walk or keep his balance anymore? If he can't walk or is very dizzy, I would call the pediatrian immed. Also, does he have tears, is he still urinating? If the answer is no, call immed.
Our 5 yr old was sick over Christmas and eventually needed to go to the hospital for hydration. This was after days of serious vomiting and couldn't keep any pedialyte in her. Now, our 16 mos old was ill for two weeks, but could keep some sport drinks or pedialyte in, so she was fine. I used a medicine syringe and would squirt a tsp of gatorade into the side of her mouth every 5 mins.
Good Luck and don't ever feel like a pain in the butt calling your doctor. That's what they're there for. Also, let me know how he's doing.
