Hello,

My 5 1/2 month old was sleeping in the swing because he had acid reflex, but I had to start putting him in his crib because he was getting up every 4 hrs. I put him in the crib and he's doing the same thing even worse. my dr. said to drop one of his feedings and let him cry but he doesn't stop. I let him cry for 1 hr at 1am. Finally gave him a bottle and he drank a whole 5 oz and for him thats a lot. then h'es up at 5:30 and won't stop crying so I ended up putting him in the swing and he went back to bed with out a bottle. Is it his acid reflex or he just got used to the swing? Oh, the night before his schedule in the crib was bottle at 9:00 sleep till 1:00 cried gave bottle at 1;45 woke again at 4;00 cried an hr gave bottle at 5;00 then slept till 8;30. This is not good!!!

What can I do next?

All my kids had the acid reflux and needed to have their heads elevated to sleep. My first two slept in their car seats! When babies are in the womb, they are in a tight surrounding atmosphere and feel safe and secure, which is why we swaddle them and which is why I think they like to sleep in their swings and car seats. I found a really great sleep "chair" on nappytime.com. It is shaped like a car seat but I think it is a little more comfortable. I put it in his crib. He sleeps from 9:00PM until 5:00am. Your son may be teething as well. This can cause sleep disruption too.

Apparently he likes that swing; and the upright position is appropriate for all of us....let him be comfortable and restful for as long as it takes, and then you get some rest, too, momma...you need a break! By the time he's ready for horizontal sleep he'll be ready for a pillow, or place a pillow under the mattress to elevate it so he gets proper respiration.
Blessings, S.

I will guess he is used to the swing. Easy way to tell. Pick him up and holding him in a lying position start rocking, if he stops as soon as the motion starts, its the swinging. If he continues crying put him upright, if he stops its reflux and try a tsp of mylanta. My daughter had reflux until about 7 months. a tsp of mylanta when it got real bad quieted her immediately. If its the rocking, I'm sorry but there is only one way, let him cry. Comfort him every ten minutes or so, but absolutely under NO circumstance should you put him back in the swing. Good luck.

Hi!

I highly recommend the book "Heathly Sleep Habits Happy Child". It looks at and explains several approaches to helping develop good sound sleep habits that will last a life time. It also addresses specifically acid reflux: elevate one end of crib mattress, sit upright 30 min after feeding, etc. I don't know if you have started to get comfort objects as part of the crib/sleep routine. My daughter at this age started to be lulled by the Fisher Price aquatic soother, her paci, and she clutched a soft mini bear. The hardest thing to get past is helping them fall back aleep. The book really helped us and i didn't have to let her cry it out which was important to me.

most kids will drop at least one night feeding by now but every kid is different. especially if your poor ittle guy is dealing with A/R. my humble opinion is that babies will drop their feedings when they are ready. to see if they are ready you can offer some water instead...if they are truly thirst/hungry you'll know.

I hope you can get some help from hubby...maybe alternating nights so you can get your rest.

good luck and you'll get there!
