When my son was 6 months, we started with cereal at breakfast. When he was fine with that for a week or so, we then added veggies at lunch. I think we did 2 meals a day for awhile before moving to 3 where he would have veggies again. Doctors say to start with veggies or they will always want the sweet stuff! I then gradually added fruit into his diet after he had tried a variety of vegetables. Now, he still eats fruit and cereal at breakfast and I give him fruit and veggies for lunch and dinner. You also want to try one food at a time to watch for allergies, give them 3 days for each veggie and fruit. Good luck!

My daughter just turned one. Now is the time that I have really concentrated on the types of foods she is eating, because the put her on whole milk. When she was about 6months I didn't worry too much, since she was getting most of her nutrients from formula I would just experiment with the 1st and 2nd state foods too see what she liked, but her main meals were her bottles. I would only introduce her to one new food a week just to make sure she didn't have an algergic reaction.

Good luck

Hi Brandy! When our son was that age we asked our pediatrian and they gave us some written information on what to do. Our son is two now, so I don't remember too much. I think we started with the cereal for a week or longer and when he had no issues with that, we introduced one new veggie or fruit at a time. that way if there are any allergies, we could maybe pin it down. Eventrually, we went thru all the veggies and fruit. Good Luck!

I gave my boys cereals or oatmeals in the morning (the baby kind) maybe with a banana or I bought frozen wild blueberries and pureed them to add with the oatmeal (they loved blueberries). When he has some teeth you can offer plain cheerios just make sure you watch him carefully in case he chokes but I think my son started eating them around 7 months or so. My eldest did not care much for the cheerios, though...He liked the honey nut but you should not give anything with honey until they are older for allergy reasons. Eggs were always enjoyed (scrambled), pieces of toast, plain yougurt (yobaby has good yogurt,I have even tasted it and you can get it at walmart for much cheaper than other stores). Lunch I usually fed rice cereal with green beans, carrots, peas...any of the baby foods or meats. Dinner was usually the same kinds of things as lunch or if there was leftovers from lunch. Or you could offer him pieces of some of the things your family is eating for dinner, like if you are having rice offer him some or cut up pieces of pasta so he can eat them. My kids love pasta! I know there are other things I am not thinking of, but good luck.

My daughter is now 20 months, but I would give her cereal in the morning, at that age and for breakfast and dinner blend canned veggies or chop up canned fruits, not any "baby food" other than the Gerber oatmeal cereal, but be careful on how much fruit you give him as at that age we did too much fruit and it gave her a terrible diaper rash as it increased the bowel movements dramatically! I did a lot of yams and mashed potatoes!

Good luck!

Hi Brandy,

The best advise I could give you is run don't walk to your nearest book store or jump on line and check out the best book I could ever recommend for what to feed your baby and when. The name is "Super Baby Food" by Ruth Yaron.

I promise you will love it. She recommends starting your baby on solids at 6mths when their digestive system is fully developed and lays everything out for you on what to start them on when etc.... She has all that and more....... Even recipes and things to make when they become toddlers and it is all healthy stuff. Even the easiest way to make your own baby food and not have to virtually buy any baby food jars unless you want to as back up.

I could go on and on but I have to run. Check it out you will love it!

Happy Feeding!

Here is a great website for physical developmental skills and when you would want to seek out a professional opinion. Sounds like your child is right on course though! http://www.hceip.org/physical_therapy.htm

We offer physical therapy evaluations as well as speech and occupational (sensory, feeding etc) -- I like the website above better then ours, but you can reach Advanced Therapy Solutions at ###-###-#### if you need an evaluation of skills in the future.

For now, all sounds good. I can't help much with the feeding ideas. It has been a long time since my little ones were little-- and I totally have forgotten!

Hi. With the sitting up, my son didnt sit up until he was almost nine months so it can be normal, just make sure to give him some tummy time. My son really didnt crawl either and my son started walking a week after he was one.

You need the book---Super Baby Food by Ruth Yaron. It is a great book. It will tell you what, when, how much and even give you ideas to make your own food for the baby.

Hi Brandy,

I would wait if he is not sitting up yet. That is one of the readiness signs. Also, him taking an interest in what you are eating is too. And once you do start him, do one new food at a time and give it 3 or 4 days before introducing another food. At this point in his life, eating baby food is more about getting used to different tastes and textures and less about getting nutrients in him. As long as he is getting formula or breastmilk he is getting all the nutrients he needs, and more than you could give him with baby food alone. Make sure that you are giving the baby food in addition to what he gets from bottle or breast, not replacing those meals. Remember that this is the time where he is learning to use his tongue to move the food around, which is new, so a mess is to be expected. Oh, on that note, if it doesnt appear his tongue thrust is gone yet, that is another indication he is not ready yet. But while feeding them food is fun, I would wait until he can sit up and meets all the readiness signs first. No need to rush him, he's only little for so long. Good luck! :)
