My son is 3 years of age. He was complaining of stomach pain more than often. I noticed he had spots on his tounge, like a strawberry latch. I thought it was probably from eating hot food at school, so I took him to the doctor. We found out he had strep throat. He has being really gasey lately, lost of applatite, stomach kind of hard. He has not just had a good bowl movement in about a week, today I started giving him something to try to help him be able to go. He is starting to lose a lil weight.

What can I do next?

When my granddaughter was in the hospital this July with strep she lost several pounds due to getting severely dehydrated. They just can't eat or drink due to the pain in their throats. Her booty shorts would fall down around her ankles when she bounced on the tumble trak.

You might ask your pediatrician about a one time steroid shot. There is a lot of strep going around. They have found that if the person gets a once only steroid shot it can significantly reduce the swelling and inflammaton. This allows the person to eat and drink a little. Everyone that has mentioned it too me stated that it really helped a lot.

Posters are right and he is probably constipated from not getting enough fluids due to the sore throat and mouth. The gassiness is a sign that he needs to have a bowel movement but it could be too hard to pass. Miralax is a modern wonder, I swear. The dose my doctor gave me for our daughter is 1 teaspoon in any drink two times a day. That will help him go to the bathroom. To help it along, I gave it to my daughter in apple or pear juice.

If you are having trouble getting your son to drink, offer as many options as possible, like popsicles or warm jello that has dissolved but hasn't set, warm tea. Avoid dairy because it can constipate.

He could be allergic to the meds from the doctor. Many of them can cause stomach upset. Personally I cannot take zithromax or any of the sulfa based drugs because I get extremely ill. Might want to ask your doctor if there are alternative meds.

I have never used the mirilax but our ped recommended that we give my son mineral oil. he used to be really constipated all the time. a tablespoon would do it. he would just slurp it down and within an hour he would go. my granddaughter also had this problem but if you could get her to drink some pure cherry juice she would go almost immediately. so maybe try those things.

side note: be prepared with the plunger after he goes. if its been a week he will probably plug the toilet. and don't yell or he will go into the phase where he holds it so as not to plug the toilet again

Time to go back to the Doc,if that one doesn't give you a good indication of what is WRONG because there IS something wrong going on in his little body, take him to another Doc! He should NOT be losing weight! If he continues to complain of stomach pain & he is bloated, etc. maybe even a trip to the ER. Three yr olds just don't lose weight, they are supposed to gain (unless they are morbidly obese).Poor little guy!

I know it's funny (not ha-ha) but stomach pain is one of the signs of strep throat.

He should have been given an antibiotic for the strep. If his stomach is STILL hard after taking the antibiotic? Try yogurt.

If his bowel movements are hard - do NOT give him bananas this will only make it harder. Usually with an antibiotic one gets diarrhea because the antibiotic kills all the good bacteria too...therefore yogurt is usually a great balance!

If he is having trouble going? I would be concerned since he's on an antibiotic and would call the doctor. I'm not sure what you are giving him to help him go - but warm maple syrup and peanut butter are WONDERFUL natural laxatives....

If you can get him to eat a little yogurt with probiotics it might help his little tummy with the antibiotics...seemed to help mine. I'd also keep doing the miralax. Poor little guy. I hope he feels better soon!

Whenever my son has had strep, he gets a bad tummy and then antibiotics don't help at all. My doc told me to get these little probiotic packs, I get them in the Culturelle brand. You just put one pack in their milk, juice, whatever, they don't have taste and help to balance their little tummies. Mine just went through a crazy cold and ear infection and his tummy went wacky as well. I don't think it is abnormal, just keep a watch on the weight, push fluids (popsicles or whatever) and maybe try probiotics.

The weight loss is due to his not wanting to swallow due to the strep. He will rebound that once his throat (and tummy) are back to normal!

What meds and when did they give it to him for the strep?

For the constipation you could try Mirilax. Works well and isn't upsetting to the stomach. You can get it at Target etc. Hope he feels better soon : )
