AC Temp Setting... What Is Best?

Mine is set anywhere from 76-78 degrees. Depends on how hot it is outside. We still use ceiling fans all day and night.

right now here in tx is 82 outside i have my ac at 65-60 during the day because the hi temp at day is 90 degrees aoutside and inside my house is super hot at night i leave it at 70 degrees.

Most of the year, I sleep on top of the blankets and my wife sleeps under them. I have a fan on my side of the bed that helps me sleep cool enough. Have your husband use a fan to help him sleep cool enough. Then you can raise the temperature a little.

You both deserve to be comfotable. He can only take off so much. You can put something extra on to keep warm.

Count me among the polar bears! I keep ours at about 72.

We never go lower than 75 (my husband prefers to keep it around 78!) This is for environmental reasons. I'm actually more comfortable in cooler temperatures, but there are other ways to keep the temperatures down down - close your blinds during high-sun times, run ceiling fans, etc.

i get very cold easily. so the AC is off during the day when I am alone in the house. It has gotten to 85 and it's just peachy for me :)
during the night and warm nights we agree on 77F for upstairs, and shut it off downstairs.
Wintertime we fight again, my husband wants the heat set to 69F I put it on 75F and even with that i am freezing cold. We have a fireplace so downstairs during the day the heater is set to 70 while the fireplace is set to 77F.
again, I am always cold. My kids have my temperature as well and they freeze easily. So it's just my husband who has to suck it up :) either way.

During the day it's set at 77 and when we are home it's set for 75. We use fans as well.

I live in Miami I keep it during the day 72/73 and at night at 67. you can always wear something a little warmer and all it takes its a little getting use to bcs we for many years did not have central ac and once we did we were always freezing but look at us now!

I really get uncomfortable during hot, sticky weather, but I set our temp no lower than 80 unless I'm doing heavy housework, then I lower it to 76 briefly.

While my energy bill is important (I live on a small income), contributing to climate change is a far bigger concern for me. I personally don't think my own constant comfort is more important than the future needs of my grandson's children.

We have ours set at 77 during the day when we are out of the house and then we bump it down to 72 with the bedroom fans running to sleep! We leave the ceiling fans running in the bedrooms all day to keep the air moving.

During the day it's set around 75-77, but we live in an old house and the upstairs gets quite hot, so we use a lot of fans in the kids' rooms for naps/bedtime. At night it goes down to 73 as I cannot sleep when it's warm. How about 74 to meet in the middle?

Wow. 72 is not cold. Perhaps it's a good question to see where people keep it in the winter, too.

We're also in Indiana. We keep our AC at 72 and heat at 69. Because we're on a heat pump, we have to convert to electric energy when it gets below 32 in the winter (which is usually Dec-March = $400/month heating bills).

You can close vents to rooms of the house not frequently used to push are only to the main living spaces.

I live in the deep south, SE Georgia. It is hot and humid. We keep ours around 75 or 76 during the day and sometimes bump it down to 74 at night. We have about 2350 sq ft, and all the floors (except the bedrooms) are tile, and the ceilings are 10 ft. So during the day, the rooms we are in feel a little cooler due to the flooring component. Plus, all front and back windows are shaded from direct light by a porch.

I am home all day though (or at least in/out with the kids), and if I were not, I would probably bump it up to 77 for daytime, and lower it when I got home for the day.

Mine is somewhere between 72 and 74 depending on humidity. But without air my house rarely gets hotter than 76 due to lots of trees around the house. My bill in the summer even with this setting is still 100's cheaper than in the winter. I actually didn't turn on my air until yesterday morning here in cinci. area. My house was fairly cool until then...and I am more likely to open windows and turn on fans than leave the air on.
I have a geothermal unit. One of the most energy effiecent ways to heat and cool a home. It's a year old.

I live in the sub-tropics of South Florida. It is hotter than hell here and it stays that way for about nine months out of the year. Our air is set on a constant 73 degrees which means the house is really at 74 in reality. We set it and forget it. All day long......it is left at this temperature so we don't die of heat and humidity down here. Our bills are static, always the same, and run about $300.00 a month. We have a 2300 sq. foot home under air and it is a two story with vaulted celings. I will tell you this, we have completely made our home energy efficient because we have to run the A/C year round. We have sun-reflective tint on every piece of glass in the house, a covered porch out back with screens, ceiling fans in every room of the house, and light-blocking, energy saving window treatments if I really want to darken it up in here. We try our best to keep things cool and comfy. if not, we would broil to death down here!

In Tennesse, I keep it on like 73 in the summer. Right now it is still at 74. I have a very small house but it doesn't cool well. In Phoenix, I kept it at like 71 or 72. I will sacrifice eating out and shopping for the sake of staying cool in the high heat of summer.

If your unit is not new, you could see about getting it serviced (I think it something like getting recharged) and it can save money by the end of the summer by running it more efficiently. My parents just did it.

Wow - I guess we are miserly! We live in Texas - and summer here lasts for 6 months! We keep our A/C at 78 - my husband would do 80 but I might go crazy. We run our ceiling fans constantly when we are in the room (fans cool you - not the air). In winter - heat is set to 68. I would love to have that reversed!! Ha! If I need perspective - I go out in the 100 degree heat - then come in and that 78 feels cool!!

We have 4,000 sf on one level - with LOTS of trees and we do have Radiant barrier in our attic and upgraded insulation - but our electric bills can be steep!

72 when we're home during the day, 70 at night when we sleep. DH and I both like it cold, so this isn't an argument that we really have.

When we're gone during the day at work, we keep it set on 76. We have a 3000sq ft vertical townhouse, and our bills are typically around $150 in the summer.

Ugh, 76? I'd melt! lol. I'm with your husband. The hottest I can handle in the house is 72. We sleep with it at 70 the highest. We also have a pretty big house and yes, our electric bill kills us all year round anyway. Spring and fall is the only time we get a break. Sorry, I know I didn't help your side.

We are in AZ and last year I had the ac set at 74 and our highest electric bill was $440. So this year I'm trying to keep it at 78 but I'm dying already! But we have the ceiling fans on as well as some other fans and that seems to help. Set it at 74 and compromise. Good luck!

I actually can't believe some people are keeping their houses at nearly 60 degrees during warmer months! What a waste! as soon as someone opens a door, there goes a handful of your money! I live in Phoenix, AZ. So far this summer we've been up to about 105 F. We are looking at 115-120 in the next two months, so I always take other states complaints of heat with a grain of salt! Humidity is horrible, but dry heat kills!

We actually just started doing the reduction settings given to us by SRP. That means during the morning, we stay 78. From noon to 3pm we lower the settings to about 74. From 3-6pm we shut off the unit completely and keep the house set at 82. It NEVER gets to 82 in the house because we've pumped so much cold air in in the afternoon. After 6pm it returns to 78 and continues that way till the next afternoon.

My roommates and I actually think its TOO cold in the house sometimes and bump it up to 79 or 80 when we're home. Having it at 74 during those 3 hours is a pain sometimes because it gets too cold!

With this plan, our energy usage is usually between $100-$150 a month. We have a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom house (one room and bathroom is an add on which costs more to cool btw) and so far I'm the lowest priced of these answers! We also utilize our ceiling and tower fans (there is a ceiling fan in every room and we have 3 tower fans).

You have to realize the summer is hot. Keeping your house in the 60's when the temp outside is around 80+ is throwing your money away. Adapting to the temperature with proper clothing, low cost fans and utilizing intuitive temperature settings on your a/c unit (knowing what time of day is hottest in your area and preparing for that by pumping cool air in BEFORE that time) saves hundreds of dollars, keeps energy costs down and saves the environment!
