Accents JFF

I am Welsh, and have a Welsh accent - which most people over here thinks sounds generic British - people ask me to "say something" which is a bit irritating, because what do you say? lol
I like the Texan drawl, which is lucky coz that's where I live!

Florida is a wierd state... those of us who were "born and raised" there have a mild Southern accent. When I moved to NY, my boss told me to "lose the drawl b/c people wouldn't take me serioulsy". He was right- they got distracted by it. In Miami, there is a latino accent regardless of heritage and once you get north of Boca- it's pretty much Alabama!

My favorite accent, though is definitely Persian. My neighbor is Persian and she has a heavy accent. I love it and so does my little boy! He'll run over to her and ask her to talk to him in her "pretty words".

I'm in Cape Town and everyone loves "my accent". I'm from Wyoming with somewhat of a high voice (people on the phone ask to speak to my mommy). In the U.S., I have no accent, but here... ;)

Few people in Florida are natives, they're mostly transplants from the north. I love the accent of older Charlestonians here - it's a distinctive southern drawl. Not like those stupid southern accents actors on TV have. ugh!

I love the French and Austrailian accents. Pair those with a good looking man, and I'll swoon all day long. ha ha

I'm from NJ, now I live in VA. When I first moved here, everyone made fun of my northern accent. When I visit up north, now they make fun of my southern accent (though it's still prodominately northern for sure!!)

And this is NORTHERN NJ, which has a totally different accent from the southern part.

I have a really, really hard time understanding foreign accents, but an Irish accent is soooo sexy ;)

my husband is from england, and has the BEST of the english accents. He is from northern U.K. I still love to listen to him. no wonder most american movies/ tv shows are full of english actors.

I have always lived in Texas. Around here, no one has an accent. (Not even me!! People are always surprised I'm a native.) We have so many people move here for jobs. It seems there are more people her from California, then Texas!

I LOVE French accents. My husband is currently trying to master Scottish and Cockney accents right now. He has been watching dialect videos on youtube.

Fun question. I got questioned about my accent (Italian) all the time when I lived in the US, especially when checking out at grocery stores (the only time when you are required to talk/responding to questions) and whenever i went to Mexican restaurant. The question always was: "Where is you accent from?" since not very many real Italians live in the south, nobody could tell! In the Mexican restaurant I was often mistaken by ispanic because I could roll my "R" while ordering "quesadilla verde", when in reality I can't speak spanish at all!!! I read many of you love english accent...I disagree, to me it sounds so "rigid".much like the german accent..I looove the American accent (both while speaking english and italian) words flow more easily and it's got a beautiful, joyous sound. I learned a couple of sentences pronounced with an american southern accent (I love the "y'all" thing!) and I used to crack up all my american friends and family any time I would use them...accents are cool, I love that there are so many. The ones i absolutely, positively cannot understand (when speaking english), though, are scottish and indian, there's no way. French accent (in english) is funny (instead of "the" they tend to say "zeh") but I like it better when they speak italian. Opposite for spanish: ok when they speak english, but when they speak italian...a little less.Fun question!

I lived in Tampa Florida for ten years, but I haven't met anyone yet who was born in fl. It's a modern young city and most people relocate from other big cities for work opportunities, beautiful weather, brand new homes and lower propery taxes. It depends where in florida do you live, big cities like Orlando, Tampa and Miami no southern accents there. Lots of European visitors, I love them.

The antipodean accents. When I was growing up I thought south African accents were just awful, but then I fell in love with the most wonderful South African man, which changed everything (didn't end up marrying him). Oh what a whirlwind, beautiful romance that was... Australian and New Zealand accents are at the top of my list too. It's hard to beat a handsome Maori man with a beautiful voice. Sorry, now this is just about men...lol.

The Spanish (from Spain) and Italian accents! hands down!

Im a Texan and one of my moms friends years ago was from California and he asked me what hill I came out of! Dang it! I didn't know I sounded that country but I guess so! We went to eat breakfast the other day and our waitress talked so fast I couldn't understand her. Turns out she is from Wisconsin! I love to here boston people talk. Mmmmmmm mark wahlberg!! :)

I am from New York, Yankee parents. But grew up in Texas. I have the worst of both worlds. I talk really fast and am kind of abrubt, but do it with a Texan drawl. Kind of hard to understand, I'm told. Texan drawl only works if you talk slow.

Speaking of accents, many of you have mentioned, we're not the ones with the accents. I have noticed that when people with very heavy accents sing, it goes away. For instance Adelle. When she sings, she sounds like any bluesy girl in America. It's beautiful and melodic the way one word melts into the next. But, oh, when she speaks. It hurts my ears! It's that cockney English, very abrasive and shrieky. Others too have singing careers and sound like they grew up in America, but when they speak, the tone and inflection, emphasis put on certain letters is totally differant. What does that prove? Nothing I'm sure. I just find it interesting.

When I moved to the Midwest it was fairly apparent that I was from the East Coast. I think my accent is pretty neutral but apparently when I get angry it comes out quite a bit more. I can definitely tell that I pronounce things differently than the people around here...they elongate their double oo's. Like, cooler sounds like cewler. It is more pronounced in women than men, strangely enough. I like Irish accents (who doesn't?), Bulgarian, English, and Welsh. I dislike Canadian and Southern US accents. I don't know why, they just hit my ear wrong, I guess.

I guess I've been told I have the midwestern accent especially when I worked further south. they said it was pretty obvious I wasn't "from around here". French men have the best accent by far :)

My husband is from Rhode Island and used to have a tiny bit of one; "the picture hangs on the WHAAWL." But he's almost lost it. His super cute mom - the cutest mother in law in the world - still has it in spades. Her name is Sheila. Or, SHEILER as she says it. She's living in "Florider" now and getting teased by her coworkers. Glad she has such a great attitude about it. She's so good natured about the ribbing.

My daughter heard an episode of This Old House and shouted "those guys talk like Grandma!"

I have a bit of a Minnesota accent, but not at all like the people on "Fargo." People in Chicago occassionally make fun of my long vowels, but not too often. When I go home to MN and watch the news, the people they interview DO sound like "Fargo," and I pray to God that's not what I sound like :)

My husband's cousin from Iraq immigrated to Jacksonville, FL about 7 years ago. He lived there a few months and then came to visit us. We picked him up at the airport and were talking with him. After a few minutes he stopped me and said, "I can understand you! I can't understand anyone in Jacksonville! I thought my English was terrible!" Haha, loved it!

I love South African, Australian, and Castillian Spanish the most. I think Irish accents are cute, but Scottish I have a hard time deciphering.

I'm from southern NJ, so not much of an accent unlike northern NJ. We moved to Delaware several years ago & people here STILL tell me that I talk funny. We're about 35 miles as the crow flies from where I grew up, sheesh!

I love a good Irish accent, give me goose bumplies!!
