Hello. I found out recently that I have a low blood count (Hemoglobin) and low iron. I have received much great advise regarding what to eat to bring my results up and have more energy (medical professionals, family, friends). My PCP put me on iron pills and I started my vitamin regiment again (One A Day-Women Active Mind & Body). I've had heavier periods (due to stress) for the past 6 six months (lightened up this month) to the point of passing clots. My Dr. also says if my hemoglobin does not improve, I will need a blood transfusion soon. My husband is very supportive along w/my children and family. I work in a medical environment so, my co-workers make sure I'm taking care of myself. I would love to hear from all you Moms/Mothers/Momas out there who may also be anemic, have been, or know someone that is. What do you do to relax, stay energetic w/o becoming exhausted too fast, and focused? I would also like to know the process for processing blood? In the event I might need a transfusion, I want my husband to donate who is healthy and compatible. I noticed lately that I get easily irritated w/my husband and inpatient w/my kids - so tired and sleeping routine out of wack. Appreciate all advise/wisdom!!

What can I do next?

My mother has anemia due to a medical issue. She gets shots that make her body produce more red blood cells (Epoetin). Personally I would probably prefer that over a blood transfusion, depending on the side effects... speak to your doctor about alternative treatments.

I lost an enormous amount of blood after a traumatic event which caused my hemoglobin to go to approx. ~4. Just picking up my purse or walking across a room was exhausting. It took about 6 weeks of iron therapy for my levels to return. That is the amount of time it typically takes for blood cells to replenish themselves. One note - you may want to talk to your doctor about your husband donating blood for you. If you are still of childbearing years and plan to have more children, there are significant reasons NOT to use blood donated by your husband, as it poses a risk to your future children (if you plan to have children). Don't know if your doctor has mentioned this to you or not, but if you haven't had this conversation yet, you need to. Hope this helps! Best wishes to you.

Drink lots of water, have red meat (especially liver if you will), and dark green leafy vegetables.

Hi J..
I had to have open heart surgery due to a hole in my heart. The doctor wanted me to have a transfusion afterward because my hemoglobin was so low. I asked to have one more day before getting it. He agreed but said no longer than that. I took several doses of Shaklee's LiquiLea. The next morning my count was normal. Another friend was passing blood clots the size of grapefruits and also was helped with the Liquilea.
OneADay is a synthetic vitamin and you will get very little benefit from it. Shaklee is the number one seller of natural supplements. I highly recommend switching. You can check them out at http://www.shaklee.net/healthforlife
After you check it out, I would be happy to help you decide whitch supplements would be right for you.
I am 55 and have plenty of energy and focus.
Good luck and God bless.

I don't have anemia, but I would like to suggest a better vitamin. You may want to try something like Nature's Plus multivitamin or another multivitamin that you can find at Green Fields Market or Sun Harvest. These better vitamins digest better and your body uses more of the vitamins. You can ask any one of the people in that department and they can recommend a good one. I use Nature's Plus.

Also, you may want to try to eat more fruits and nuts. Fruits are naturally sweetened and can give you a good ans healthy boost when you need one. The nuts have protein and are a good pick me up. Stick with the heart healthy nuts and don't get the ones that are sweet roasted with a lot of sugar.

I hope you start feeling better soon.

Hi.
I battle with anemia quiet a lot, and have extremely heavy periods. I just went to the GYN and through a description of my cycles and an ultrasound, they have decided that I have menorrhagia. He suggested a proceedure called NovaSure. There is a website www.novasure.com.

Some of the symptoms of this are anemia, heavy periods, extreme tiredness, moodiness.

I don't know if you fit the bill or not, but I fit it to a tee! I would ask your dr. for a brochure and check it out.

One of the only requirements for this is that you have had some type of permanent birth control, like having tubes tide.
