Hi Mamas! My husband and I are planning to go on an Alaskan cruise in June. This particular cruise (through Princess Cruiselines) sails to Juneau, Skagway, Glacier Bay, Ketchikan and Victoria. Just curious if any of you have gone on an Alaskan cruise, and if so, have you visited any of these places? To save some money, we are thinking of also getting a room without a balcony or oceanview (since most of our time will be spent outside of the room anyway). Appreciate your thoughts or suggestions you might have! Thanks!

We're also going on an Alaskan cruise, but in July. Check out the website www.cruisecritic.com. The boards there will give you super tips on the best sights to see and how to get the most out of your cruise. I've been on a couple of cruises and highly recommend a room with a window. There are times you'll want to just come back to your room to relax and it's great to have the sunlight and view. On our last cruise, we sat our on our balcony and relaxed as the ship left port and it was wonderful. Not sure that we'll get a balcony this time, given that it's likely to be cold up there, but will at least get a window.

Have fun!

My husband and I took an Alaskan cruise in 2004 for our honeymoon and we loved it!! We can't wait to go back someday. We sailed from Vancouver to Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, and Wrangell. Skagway was, by far, our favorite (although we loved all of the stops) and I would highly recommend the White Pass and Yukon Route Railway in Skagway if you do a shore tour; it was absolutely amazing! We did a lot of shore tours, but we agreed that the White Pass would be the only one we would do again. In Ketchikan we did a totem pole tour, which was pretty neat and in Juneau we saw the Mendenhall glacier (which was awesome) and went to this great garden place called Glacier Gardens. We also did a lot of shopping and exploring on our own and we had an amazing time. We thought about not getting an oceanview room on the ship, but I think we got a free upgrade (we went up from the 4th deck to the 8th or something) and it was well worth it. I don't know if a balcony is necessary, but for us, having the window was great, especially on the two days we were at sea. I hope you and your husband have a great time!

I haven't been on a cruise but I live in Petersburg (which is between Juneau and Ketchikan but we have too shall of a port for the large ships) and I also lived in Ketchikan for 9 years. I was born and raised here so if you have specific questions about what to see or if some of the side triips are worth it you can email me. If the weather is nice the views are spectacular (as far as whether or not to get an oceanview) but I would think if you didn't need thr privacy (and you won't have to worry about waiting in your cabin for a napping baby) that you could see the view as well from the lounges on the ship.

We went on a similar cruise, (went to Sitka instead of Skagway) and it was beautiful. Alaskan cruise excursions can be very expensive, so you may want to do some research and see if you can find similar activities on your own instead of through the cruise line. In Ketchikan we went on a float plane ride. A little expensive, but well worth it. It was amazing. The average temp while we were on the cruise was 55 and it rained almost every day, so we never used our balcony. As for an oceanview, you can go to the top decks and get the oceanview anytime you want it. Also, friends of mine took a helicopter ride (don't know which city) and landed on a Glacier and said it was amazing. Juneau and Ketchikan had great little shops. The only stop I didn't enjoy was Sitka and you're not traveling there.
