Allergic Reaction to Lipstick

After using the same liner and lipstick for maybe five years+, I think I have finally identified that I am suddenly allergic to the lipstick I am using (MAC). Has anyone had a similiar thing happen? In this case, I wore it yesterday and within an hour of wearing it my lips felt chapped and swollen. Just wondering, if anyone can recommend a good hypoallergenic lipstick that they love? From reading about hypoallergenic stuff - I see online, that the FDA does not mandate or govern what truly makes a product hypollergenic. For those companies that make it and label their product that way, it supposedly just supposed to be less of a trigger for those who have sensitivities. My girlfriend suggested, perhaps that maybe MAC changed their formula or what perservatives that make up the color, (which I imagine, is highly likely)? I just called MAC customer service and was told someone would call me back - but the one person who answered indicated not all their products are Hypoallergenic and determatology tested. Do you have any other advice and again, any products that you love that are hypoallergenic too?
Thanks,

What can I do next?

I am allergic to lipsticks, too. The chapsticks and lip balms didn't help and sometimes made it worse. I tried L'Oreal Color Riche a couple years ago and have been wearing it ever since. My sister had the same problem and has switched to this one, too.

I see you've already gotten lots of responses trying to sell you something. I'm not. My thought is this...since it happened suddenly, could it be a bacterial infection? I know eye products and I would think, lip products can get bacteria in them pretty easily. I have sensitive eyes and know that I am bad about not throwing out eye makeup after I've had it for a while. I found out that everytime I used one particular eyeshadow I would have eye problems. I had used the same product before and since and haven't had a problem, so I think that particular shadow got something in it from the applicator. Not trying to gross anyone out, but wanted to voice the possibility. I would hate for you to buy an expensive product like Arbonne and not have that be the cause of the problem.

I agree with Maggie...I use Arbonne everything because of all of the things that are in cosmetics. They have a great selection on lipstick color and have special edition colors as well. There are also a variety of lip gloss types. Feel free to go to my website at www.marcipetterson.myarbonne.com and look around. I started being an avid label reader after I found out what all cosmetic companies put into their products -yuck!!!!!

Let me know if you have any questions at all and I will certainly help you out as far as websites I have found, etc...

Sometimes I feel like this site is all about people waiting to sell you something when you mention that you need a new product, but in saying that, I use Arbonne products and I love the fact that they are all natural products. I do not sell the products, but I do think they are wonderful and they have a money back guarantee so you should feel comfortable trying them. Make sure that you don't use any of the "plumping" products though since your lips may be sensitive. From what I have read, these products somewhat irritate your lips to make them plump, which it sounds like you don't need. Good luck!

Burt's Bees has a chapstick with color in it. I love it and no longer wear any real lipstick. It is mostly natural, but depending on what exactly you are allergic to.... You should call the company and see how they have changed their formula. You will be better able to choose a product after that. Good Luck!

Good morning K.!
I also have a 2 year old as well :)

I read your post and wanted to tell you a little about Arbonne products. They are terrific and all natural. Products can be sold and listed as hypoallergenic and still rate 3.9% on the irritability scale. ALL of Arbonne's products are a zero on the scale. The best thing about the lipsticks is that they do not contain tallow (animal bi-product). I know that isn't pleasant to think about, but you are most likely reacting to the bi-product that is in the lipstick.

I'd love to tell you more about our products. In the meantime, check out www.arbonne.com and click on the "shop online" link. All of the prices listed are retail, but I'd be happy to share my wholesale discount with you (35% off) so you can try it out and see if it might be a better fit.

Take care and I will be praying for you and your family.

This happens to me with any lip products that contain lanolin. Also, a lot of sunscreens will do the same. Lanolin sensitivity is fairly common, and it's not too difficult to get lipstick/gloss without lanolin. I have Arbonne lip gloss that doesn't have lanolin, and some of the drugstore brand lipsticks are made without it (I think Revlon, but you'll have to double check). You just have to read labels for a while until you find the ones that work for you. Also, watchout for chapstick type products (with or without sunscreen). Most of them contain lanolin.

When they get really irritated, try a cortizone or benadryl cream to reduce inflammation, and moisturize with pure aloe vera gel (Mannatech makes a good one called Emprizone) or even plain vaseline (NOT aquaphor, which is a vaseline/lanolin combo).
Good luck!

I'm so sorry that happened! I've heard of that happening, yes! It is likely that the product changed without you knowing until the reaction. Cosmetics are changed and revamped all the time!

I'm a Mary Kay consultant and you get a 20% discount for being a part of mamasource. Our products are all dermatologist tested!!!!!!!!!!! I can't say they are all hypoallergenic but they are all tested, and tested and tested! Our lip sticks are great! They stay all day, are nourishing, and have several great shades. Here's my website! I'd love to get together and just see which shade you would like to try!

Let me know either way! Good luck!

I had the same problem of becoming suddenly allergic to my lipstick. After investigating, I learned the company had changed their formula. I choose to wear lipstick now only for special things. When I do wear lipstick, I have found that Almay and Clinique and sometimes Estee Lauder are okay for me.

Good luck!
