Alternative Treatments for Osteoperosis?

My Mom, who is 71 and the most healthy, active woman I know, has osteoperosis. She hates Bonive an Fosimax, as it seems to "bore" a hole in her esophogas. She is interested in alternative therapies, ans has been taking megs-doses (under the supervision of her Doctor) of calcium and vitamin D. Any treatments out there other than the aforementioned medicines?
Thanks!

Little known fact: your body can only absorb 500mg of Calcium at one time. So, if you take anything with more than 500mg (Caltrate-D is 600 mg), your body simply can't absorb it all at once, and the extra will be flushed from the system.

There are several medications that are on the market (or very close to being FDA approved) for treatment of Osteoporosis.

Some medications are orally taken (such as Boniva and Fosamax), others are injections that you receive at your doctor's office or at home (depending on the brand). Here are the websites for those you did not mention in your message.

Amgen is also pending FDA approval on a new medication. No word on when (or if) it will be approved.

Hope this helps.
Good luck!

I also take no more than 500 mg of calcium at a time and try to space the doses at least 2 hours apart. This is what I take:

Is your Mom active? Weight bearing exercises will really help and they don't have to be hard core. Walking. 1-2 pound weights. Wall push ups.

S.,
I would also recommend going with the Shaklee Patty mentioned. Shaklee does the appropriate research and testing on their products that other companies don't. They have also sponsored some of the vitamin D research that's coming out.

I don't know about any alternative therapies but I had the same problem with the Fosamax tablet that your mother had. I am now on the liquid form of Fosamax and have had no problems at all.

There are a few good calcium supplements available. Keep in mind you actually need more than calcium with vitamin D. You also need magnesium, vitamin K, and small amounts of zinc copper, manganese and boron help, too. Recent research has shown that someone 71 years of age needs much more vitamin D than the RDA. They also need 1500 mg of calcium. Look for a company whose products are natural, clinically proven, and has been in business for 50 years. If you want to know more, contact me and I'll try to help. Good for you! Helping your M. to find something better. New studies are showing side effects from those drugs.
My choice had been by a company called Vita Logic. They have a multi-vitamin Daily Extra that you can get with or without iron. That is the base of their line. Then they have Osteo-Protect. It has calcium and other vitamins, minerals, and a few other things. It is easy on the digestive system - for me. Good luck. I hope she find a solution.

You Mom should talk to her GYN about one of the injectible medications available. She will still need to take calcium with magnesium and vit D daily. Medications stimulate bone cells to add calcium to bones - they can only do that if you're getting enough calcium, etc. in your diet or with supplements. YOU (and almost all women) should also be taking 500mg of calcium with vit D and magnesium 2-3x/day. If your mother has osteoporosis, you are more likely to develope it. Adding calcium to your diet now may save you from having osteoporosis later.

Hi Suzy! Has your mother ever had physical therapy? I am a PT certified in the management of osteoporosis, and there are many basic exercises that are beneficial in strengthening musces that surround osteoporotic bones that are highly prone to fracture. This program should be done in addition to a medication/ supplement program. There are also many movements that should be avoided when you have osteoporosis ( such as bending/twisting your spine) Let me know if you'd like more information.
