The ones at Target are great and you can get all kinds of extra stuff for it that is MUCH cheaper than American girl!!
My mom wants to buy my daughter a doll similar to the American Girl dolls. Do any of you know any less expensive but similar type dolls? I would love it to be the same size. As a side note, my daughter is 6 years old and has not asked for and probably is not aware of the American Girl dolls. Thanks in advance for your help.

Our Generation dolls at Target for a little over $30. They are 18" tall. We got my daughter one last Christmas and it's still in good condition since she took good care of it. We are getting her an American Girl doll this Christmas.
I second the Our generation dolls at Target. It's hard to tell them apart of you ask me. My daughter has a couple and she loves them, but she does want an American Girls doll this year. I got her one, in great condition on e-bay for half the cost.
I got DD an Our Generation doll for Xmas. We have an American Girl but DD destroyed her hair. She now want's another and I had not planned on getting one but found the Our Generation doll that had her same name - so I got it.
I saw some very nice look alikes at Sams Club this afternoon. They came with an extar outfit plus some accessories. They were less than $30.
Target has a close match. She has plenty of accessories and come with different colors of hair. Our daughter thought it was one for a while until my niece grew out of hers and donated it to her. Then she realized she had the real thing. They both play the same!
My five and a half year old girls love the Our Generation dolls from Target. Same size as American Girl but only 22 to 34 dollars, depending on the doll.
Kohls had one the day after Christmas for $19.99. I haven't seen it online, but maybe they still have some in the stores. I'm kicking myself for not buying one for my daughter.
Madame Alexander makes 18 inch dolls with beautiful faces. Be warned, though, their hair goes to matted fuzz very easily. If you get one, see if you can persuade your daughter to keep her hair braided. Target's Our Generation dolls have better hair, but the proportions of the face and head are a bit off. I doubt your 6 y.o. would care, though. The Target dolls also have clothes and accessories that fit the Madame Alexander dolls, as well as American Girl dolls, if your daughter eventually owns any.
My daughter is 7 and she got an Our Generation doll from Target last year for Christmas from her grandma. She had asked for an American Girl doll. She calls it her American Girl doll. It has held up well and she loves it.
The Madame Alexander dolls are really pretty and don't cost a ton. Costco will carry them this time of year. The key is for the doll to be 18" then look for one you like.
We love the Journey Girls. I think their clothing and faces are much cuter than the Our Generation dolls. They are slightly smaller than American Girl dolls, but can use the same accessories.
