One word. Terro!! It's only $4 at home depot and is amazing! I recommend it to everyone that I know and they all use it now. It's basically liquid boxax. It comes with little squares of cardboard. You put the terro on it and place near where the ants are. They eat it, take it back to the nest, and then they're gone! I love that stuff!! Can you tell, lol?

One way is to use soapy water, they hate it. Something else you can do is "paint" your concrete entrances and or the perimeter of your house with limestone. Just mix it with water so you can apply it and use a paint brush. Ants don't like it either. There are some non-toxic products you can spray inside your home as well.

we have BIG nasty black ants. In a way I am sort getting used to them. No idea where they come in, and they avoid the Terro like it's poison... wait, it is! The Terro (liquid) is what we have and it works great w/ the little sweet ants, but not these bad boys, er girls really. So when possible we squish them or put them down the drain. Personally, I'd rather have them than the teensy sweet ants, which we don't have, BUT I don't want either... Winter is coming... I don't know how to get rid of ours either, I don't want to use too much poison b/c of kids and new pup, and cats and older dogs....
I have heard vinagar makes them loose their trail....

We had this problem last year. It took a while, but we got rid of them with minimal poison. You really have to find out how they are getting in and then put the poison there. Ants can be tough to get rid of and they are pesky, but they are not disease carriers. Make sure there is nothing for them to eat or drink. When it is dry, they are usually looking for water. They will find tiny leaks under sinks or a dripping faucet to get water to drink. Also, they will eat soap and other cleaning products, so make sure all of these things are put away in air tight containers (we had them in our bathroom and they were eating all of that stuff!). If they do not have food or water, they will not survive for long. Good luck!

Terro is the best stuff ever for getting rid of ants. I've only found it at Lowes & Home Depot in the bug stuff. It's a little orange box (think the size of a bottle of vanilla extract). You just put a couple drops of the syruppy stuff down where you see the ants and within a couple days they are gone.
My parents went through a major infestation- calling exterminators & everything and they couldn't get rid of them. A friend of their's reccommended this stuff and it worked wonders! They still get infestations every couple of years (though they are very clean neat-freak kinda people), but now they just use this to get rid of them at the first sign.
We used it too, and it worked wonders! Since you use such a small amount and can put it where kids & pets can't get to it, it's not a concern.
